a This invention relates to automatic safety locks for doors, but more particularly to locks for sliding car doors, although the in vention may be used with any type of door to which-.it is ap licable.
The objects oi the invention are to im prove upon automatic safety locks for doors, simplify the construction with as lfew parts asp'ossible, increase the eiliciency and certion, partly broken away, of one end of the tainty of operation, and prevent the parts from getting out of order.
Another object of the invention is to enable the device to be operated from a distant part of the can-or from the same location at which the door operating mechanism is controlled.
To these ends the invention consists of a d'eviceembodying the combinations of. elemerits and arrangement of parts substan- "tially as hereinafter fully described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a in section, of the door locking device. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic lan view partly in section and partly brollen away showing one end of a car with the door operating and door locking devices and electrical and pneu matic' connections, and Fig. 3 is a side elevacar.

The-' 'invention is shown in this instance, by way ref illustration, in connection with a side end door. but it is to be understood as v a plicable to the center sidedoors as well.

- a reason hereinafter to appear. The piston It should" referably fit the cylinder 9 loosely to allow l akage or should otherwise be constructed to allow leakage, as by means of a leak hole, the amount of leakage depending upon the time required to o erate the door. Behind the pistonis place a coiledspring m of sufiicient strength to overcome the inertia of the piston and carry it through.
:its return stroke aided by leakage from thefront-of thepiston. At the rear of the cylinder g is shown a valve casing n, having an eirhgust port 0 with a narrow valve seat p against which a valve g is seated by a light sprin "1 which may be coiled about the valve spind e a. The upper end at of the valve 2 spiiidle projects outside of the casing n in osition to be actuated by suitable controling devices. Any suitable exhaust valve may be used in place of that disclosed, as a standard whistle valveor a balanced valve.
Tocontrol the valve 9 I have shown an electro-magnet n, in this case connected in series with the controlling solenoids c and cl, although I am not to be understood as limiting-the invention to this location of the con- 80 trolling magnet u,- Iivoted at 'v on the cylinder g is a lever to bearing on the end at of the spindle .s, the outer en forming the'armature for magnet u, so that at is energize the armature as is attract and valve g is forced open against the pressure within the cylinder-g, thus allowing thecylinder 9 to exhaust. The piston h moves-rapidly to the back of v thecylinder, thus retracting. or withdrawing the piston rod from behind the door D. The pistonh will return slowly toward the lockinglposit ion owin to the, leaka e.
In t e operation 0 the device, et it be assumed that thedoor D is closed as shown in Figs. 1, and 2, the switch V is open and thepiston rod, j, is in looking osition, with walvelg closed. To 0 en the. 001' D the operator moves switch to energize solenoid a,
' whioliiaat the same time in this instance ener- 23511116 openin valve g. The piston 7: moves quickly sfrom coking position to the end of its k'e, compressing spring m. The oper olds switch If closed momentarily to e the controlling valve U has operated, then reopens the switch V, decnergizing solenoid c and, magnet-.14, so that valve g is reseated by springm. a few-seconds for the leakage around the piston to substantially equalize the pressure, sufiicient time will be afforded to permit the f'doorto open. To close'the door tlie switch V is'movedto energize solenoid Z and at the same timemagnet to, thereby repeatinfithe operations described in connection wit the w of said lever gizes'i electro-magnet u, attracting armature Since it will require,
locking device, which is wit-lulruwn away from the door, while the door is closing, and then returns to lockingposition behind the door.
If for any reasmnthe door should fail to operate, due to failure of air or electricity, the lock will not operate and the door will be maintained closed If it should be (lo-- sired to operate the door by hand as in case of accident, a hand operating lBVGl y is provided on the piston. rod 9', and the door guide a may be slotted at 2 to permit the lever 21 to slide in the guide. Means may also be provided for controlling an elect-171' signal lamp 3 by the operation of the door lock. As shown in this instance the door guide 4 is recessed at 5 and the endG of the locking rod 5? projects into the recess in looking position. A pin 7 havin a head 8 is mounted in the recess 6, and sai pin projects through a head 9 adapted to be screw threaded into the guide 4 to close recess 5. Between the closing head 9 and the head 8 of the pin is arranged a spring 10 normally tendingto retract the pin 7. The "in 7 is provided with a contact 11 adapted to enter between the spring contacts 1.2 mounted in the bracket 13 and close the lamp circuit to the lamp 3, when the door is closed.
I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following:
- 1. In an automatic safety lock for doors, the combination with a door and a locking device, pneumatic devices for operating said door and said lockingdevice supplied from the same supply line, electro-magnetic devices for controlling said door operating andlock operating devices, and. means for sim ul taneously controlling sald el.ectro-magnet-1c devices.
