To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. Gnoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Device for Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to razor attachments.
The object of the invention is to provide a strong, simple and inexpensive razor attachment which is adapted to be applied to either a wedge-shaped razor blade or a thin wafer blade for the purpose of holding its cutting edge in proper position during either the shaving or the sharpening operation, said attachment when used during the operation of shaving being adapted to hold the blade in such position to prevent the cutting of the face and said attachment when used for sharpening the blade being adapted to hold the same at the proper angle to secure the best sharpening result.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of the claims without dearting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification,Figure l is a side elevation of the old-style or wedgeshaped razor blade with the attachment of the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one of the members of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the other member of the attachment. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the attachment with a handle applied thereto, and showing a thin blade in position therein. Fig. 5 is an end elevation, partly in section, of the attachment of the present invention with a wedge-shaped blade therein, the parts being shown on an enlarged scale. Fig. 6 is a view showing a modified construction using two oppositely extending hooks and a rear plate for securing the sections together.

The razor attachment of the present invention preferably comprises a pair of members 1 and 2 which are adapted to be fitted against the opposite sides of a razor blade and to be suitably held in position thereon so as to cause the razor blade to assume the proper angle for shaving or sharpening. Each of the members 1 and 2 is formed on the outer portion thereof with a flat beveled surface 3 which is intended to rest against the face in shaving or against the strap in sharpening. Each of the members 1 and 2 on its inner face is grooved or cut away, as indicated at 4-, so as to provide a space for receiving the heel portion 5 of an approximately wedgeshaped razor blade 6. The groove t preferably, although not essentially, is formed to correspond in shape with one half of the heel portion of a wedge shaped blade.
The means for detachably securing the members 1 and 2 together preferably consists of a heel plate or rearward extension 6, one of said heel plates 6 being mounted on each of the members 1 and 2. The two metal plates thus are adapted to register with each other when the members 1 and 2 are fitted against opposite sides of a razor blade, and bolts 7 provided with nuts 8 are extended through said heel plates 6 for the purpose of securing them and the members 1 and 2 properly together on opposite faces of the razor blade.
In case varying sizes of razor blades are used, it is sometimes convenient to provide means for limiting the outward projection of the razor blade 6, so that its cutting edge will always occupy a point coincident with the extension of the beveled face 3 of the members 1 and 2. For this purpose, a hook 10 preferably is removably fitted into or otherwise connected with one of the members l and 2, and is adapted, at its lower end, to engage the razor blade 6, as shown clearly in Fig. 5
The means which are provided for adapting the attachment of the present invention to be used in connection with flat razor blades either of the single or double edge type, preferably consists of positioning pins 12 which are threaded or otherwise extended through one of the members of the attachment, such as the member 2, and are adapted, when screwed in, to fit into sockets 14 in the member 1. The outer ends or heads ofthe positioning pins 12 preferably are located in countersinks 15 which are of such depth that the positioning pins 12 can be withdrawn from the sockets 14, as indicated in Fig. 5, when using a wedge-shaped blade, without having the outer portions offsaid positioning pins to project beyond the beveled surface 3 of the member 2. hen the device is used in connection with the thin blade, as indicated in Fig. 4, the attachment is fitted against opposite sides of said blade and the two members thereof are secured together by means of the nuts 8. The positioning pins 8 are then screwed in so as to cause them to project through the openings in the thin blade and into the sockets 14.
In using the attachment of the present invention in connection with either a wedgeshaped blade or a wafer blade, it is found that the beveled surface 3, if projected or extended downward in an imaginary line I Would intersect or coincide with the cutting edge of the blade, whereby when either of the beveled surfaces 3 is placed fiat against the face, the cutting edge of the razor blade will be found to be in exactly proper position to secure the best results in shaving and also to prevent the accidental cutting of the face.
The'improved attachment is equally serviceable during the operation of stropping or sharpening the blade. When the attachment of the present invention is used in connection with a thin blade, as shown in Fig. 4, it is desirable to employ a handle 20 which is provided witha threaded shank V 21 adapted to be inserted into. a socket 22 dle,
formed in the end of one of the members of the attachment. By arranging thehanas shown in Fig. 4, the razor blade can be used in the old style. Ifit be desired to dispose the handle in such manner that the razor shall act like a hoe, a socket 25 is formed in one of the members of the attachment to receive the shank 21 of said handle. a
The attachment of the present invention is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as thoroughly efiicient in operation. I
l/Vhat is claimed is:
1. A razor attachment comprising a pair of members each having its outer faces beveled and its inner face grooved to receive one half of the heel of the razor blade, each of said members having a heel plate extending from the rear edge thereof, the heel plates of'the two members being adapted to fit together, fastening means engaging said heel plates for holding said members together, and positioning pins mounted in one of said members and adapted to fit into sockets in the other member, the outer ends of said positioning pins lying always in a plane inside of the beveled surface of the member.
2. A razor attachment comprising a pair of members each having its outer face beveled, and a hook detachably engaged with one of said members and adapted to hold the cutting edge of the razor at a point coincident with the intersection of an imaginary extension of the beveled faces of said members.
3. A razor attachment comprising a pair of members each having its outer face beveled and its inner face grooved to receive one half of the heel of a razor blade, one of said members being formed with a countersink, one of said members being formedwith an end socket to receive the handle, and one of said members being formed with the side socket to receive the handle, a positioning pin located in said countersink and adapted to be projected into engagement with the other member, heel plates connected with the respective members and adapted to be secured together to hold said members in position on opposite sides of a razor blade, and a hook detachably connected with one of said members for receiving the edge of the razor blade.
