To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo L. Eowanns, a resident of Wheeling, county of Ohio, State of Test Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a lantern having my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same partly in section and showing the globe in its raised and swung position; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line III -III of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the manner in which the side tube is cut away to receive the end portion of the lifting rod.
My invention has relation to improvements in lanterns, and more particularly to means for raising and lowering the globe and for holding the globe in its raised and lowered positions.
The invention is designed to provide means of simple, convenient and efiicient character for this purpose, and which can be manufactured and applied to a lantern at a relatively low cost.
A further object of my invention is to provide mechanism of this character in which the operating parts are so arranged as to be without projection laterally outside of the side tubes of the lantern frame.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 2 designates the base of the lantern containing the usual oil receptacle; 3 the tubular frame; 4 the vertically movable globe support; 5 the globe; and 6 the top cap which is arranged to slide vertically on the depending short center tube 7 of the frame for the purpose of permitting the globe to be raised and lowered.
8 is a lifting rod having one end portion bent upwardly, and thence horizontally outward to form a journal portion 9, which loosely engages a bearing in one of the side tubes of the tubular frame. The central portion of the lifting rod is formed with the.
upwardly directed crank portion 10, which is loosely journaled in the sleeve 11 on the under side of the globe support 41, near the forward edge thereof. The other end portion of the lifting rod is bent upwardly, as
shown at 13, thence outwardly, as at 14, and then forwardly, as at 15, then downwardly, as at 16, and terminates at its end in a finger loop 17. The horizontal portion 14- is provided with a bearing at 18 in the adjacent side tube, and the bent portion 15 passes outwardly through a slot 19 in the front side of said tube. It also passes through an aperture in a vertical slide 20, arranged on the tube, so as to normally substantially close the slot 19 but moved with the lifting rod when the latter is raised. In order to permit the assembling of the parts, the side tube is cut away, as shown in Fig. 4:, so that the bent end portion of the lifting rod may be engaged with its bearing and its cut-away portion is then closed by a cover plate 21, soldered or otherwise secured thereto, and which has a slot 22 in alinement with the slot 19. The cover plate 21 is recessed or offset outwardly on its inner side to form a seat in which the slide 20 moves. Secured to the lower side of this side tube and projecting forwardly is a spring catch 28, which is adapted to engage the downwardly bent portion 16 of the operating end of the lifting rod, and thus lock or hold the parts in their normal positions, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Upward pressure on the finger loop 17 causes the lifting rod to be rotated, thereby raising the globe support and globe. As the crank 10 passes center, the globe support and globe will be swung backwardly or away from the operator, thus leaving the burner and filling tube exposed and easy of access. The passing of the crank past center brings the operating end of the lifting rod in its position shown in Fig. 2, and the parts assume such position that there is a self-locking action which holds the globe in its raised and swung position.
The invention provides very simple and convenient means for operating the lantern globe which can be manufactured and applied to a lantern at very small cost, besides possessing the other advantages before stated.
It will be obvious that various changes can be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts. Thus, the exact form and manner of bending of the lifting rod may be changed, a different form of catch may be employed, and other slight changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined inthe appended claims.
I claim:
1. A lantern having a tubular frame, a globe support movable vertically therein, and a cranked lifting rod loosely engaging said support and j ournaled in the side tubes of the frame, one end of said rod extending into the adjacent side tube from its inner' side and thence outwardly through a vertical slot in the front side thereof, substantially as described.
2. A lantern having a tubular frame, a globe support movable vertically therein, and a cranked lifting rod loosely engaging said support and journaled in the side tubes of the frame, one end of said rod extending into the adjacent side tube from its inner side and thence outwardly through a vertical slot in the front side thereof, said cranked lifting rod being arranged to move said support and journaled in the side tubes of the frame, one end of said rod extending into the adjacent side tube from its inner side and thence outwardly through a vertical slot in the front side thereof, together with a slide normally closing said slot and movable with the end portion rod, substantially as described.
4. A lantern having a tubular frame, a globe support movable vertically therein, a cranked lifting rod loosely engaging said support and journaled in the side tubes of the frame, one end of said rod extending into the adjacent side tube from its inner side and thence outwardly through a vertical slot in the front side thereof, together with a slide normally closing said slot and movable with the end portion of the lifting rod, and a spring catch secured to the frame adjacent to the lower end of said slot, substantially as described.
