UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
CARL BsGEN, EECEASED, LA'rE or VALLENDAE, GERMANY; WILHELM BsGEN, EXECUTOE, or VALLENDAE, GERMANY.
SEAT OR STOOL FOR CIGAR MAKERS AND TVTISTERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that CARL BSGEN, deceased, manufacturer of cigars, late a citizen of Vallendar-on-theRhine, Germany, did invent new and useful Improvements in Seats or Stools for Cigar Makers or Twister-s, and that I, WILHELM BscEN, resident of Vallendar-on-the-Rhine, Germany, judge, executor of the last will and testament of the said deceased CARL BSGEN, make the presont application and desire to obtain a patent for said invention.
|The following is a specification of this invention of the said deceased CARL BsGEN.
The present invention relates to improvements in seats or stools for cigar-makers or twisters and consists in novel arrangements, which enable the workman to move or displace very easily the part of the stool on which he sits, c. the seat proper, in a forward direction or backward or circularly, while sitting on said seat proper.
Of course, the present improved stool may also be used with great advantage in other industries than the manufacture of cigars.
The invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication and in which similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure l is a side elevation of one constructional form of the improved seat or stool, Fig. 2 a plan, Fig. 3 a front view of same, partly in section, on the line B-B of Fig. l. Fig. l is a side elevation of another constructional form of the stool forming the object of the present invention.
Referring now to the drawings, the stool comprises a column, post or standard a having a base, pedestal or socle c', said column, post or standard a being surrounded by a sleeve b provided above with an enlargement or shoulders c and revoluble around the column a. Said shoulder c of the sleeve ZJ carries a bed-plate c supporting a guide (Z consisting of two opposite lying angle-irons which surround the upper part of the column a and form a guideway for a beam or slide f carrying at its outer extremity the seat proper g, which may be adjusted as to its height and fixed in its position by means of a screw 79 going through the one side of a sleeve f carried by the outer end of the beam or slide f, said screw 79 pressing against the vertical shank g of the seat g. Said beam f Specification of Letters Patent.

is squeezed between guide-rollers c disposed between, and pivoted to, said angle-irons and has a longitudinal slit Z through which passes the trunnion-shaped upper..` partz' of the column a, so that said beam or slide f can move forward or backward together vith the seat g past the trunnion c'. To the other extremity of the beam is ixed a vertica-l, pin it movable in one of the slots of special conliguration formed in an oval guide 7c rigidly connected to said trunnicn shaped part z' of the column a (Fig. 4). Said slots of the guide 7c are of such formation that from a middle rectilinear slot s two lateral slots o are branched off, said lateral slots u having a shape adapted to the oval outline of the guide 7c. Besides, to the beam y is connected a pin or pivot m, to which is fulcrumed a lever a having a guideslot in which engages the said pin or pivot m, said lever n being pivoted at its bottom part to the lower part of the sleeve l). From said lever n an arm n carrying a counterweight o and an arm n2 supporting the one end of a pedal n3 is branched olf, the other end of said pedal n3 being supported by an arm at pivoted to the sleeve l opposite to the lower fulcrum of the lever n.
Owing to the disposition and form of the slots s and fv, in which the pin 7L connected to the beam or slide f is guided, a great number of different positions can be given to the beam and consequently to the seat g.
lhen the pin t engages the middle rectilinear slot s of the guide 7c, the beam or slide f together with the seat g may be moved forward and backward by the work man treading on the pedal a3 and simultaneously exerting with his legs a corresponding pressure upon the seat g. Again, when the pin t is introduced into one of the lateral slots U of the guide 70,-after the sleeve j together with the lever system and pedal attached thereto and with the guide cl, the beam f and the seat g having been revolved correspondingly by the workman, the seat, in consequence of the special form of said slot o, can be moved by the workman, while sitting, in a parallel direction to a relatively long bench or work-table disposed in front of the stool. Now, this is very important, as, for example, in sorting cigars, the angle which the light makes in entering into the workshop can remain always nearly constant, inasmuch as the displacement of the seat or stool still remains parallel to the bench or'work-table.
In the above-described arrangement it has been admitted that the guide 7c is rigidly connected toA the upper trunnion being `made in one piece (Fig. t), so that the movement of the beam or slide f and consequently of the'seat g is still bound to, or dependent of, the form of the slots s and fu of the guide 7c. Now, in order to make any desired position of the seat proper g around the column a possible, it is necessary to render the position of the beam or slide f" and consequently of the seat g independent of the guide 7c. This, as to be seen in Figs.
' l and 3, is obtained by connecting the guide 7c with the trunnion t' of said column a. in such a manner that said guide 7c may be swung or moved up and down about the upper partof the trunnion z' as a fulcrum. To this purpose, the trunnion z' is made of two pieces, the upper part e", of said trunn nion z' being rigidly attached to the guide 7c and connected to the lower part of the trunnion el by a pin 2 so as to form a hinge. Owing to this arrangement, the upper part z" of the trunnion z' may be moved upward in the direction of the arrow t of Fig. l, so that the pin z of the lower guide CZ becomes free and the beam or slide f is also released. As soon as the guide 7c has been swung up by means of the handle g, the seat g can be moved by the workman exerting with his legs a pressure upon the seat g forward or backward orin a curve of more or less eX- tent concentric to the column or pedestal a.
I-Iaving thus fully described the invention of the said deceased CARL BSGEN, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a stool for cigar-makers or other workmen, the combination with a seat g, of a pedestal a, a sleeve ZJ revoluble with the seat g about said pedestal a, a guide l carried by said pedestal a, a beam or slide f movable in the inside of said guide Z in a longitudinal direction, a vertical pin 72, connected to the inner end of said beam or slide f, a guide 7c rigidly connected to the upper trunnion z' of said pedestal a, said guide being provided with a longitudinal slit s and two lateral outwardly curved slits e, they several slits being adapted to receive the pin la. of said guide el, so as to guide said pin it and consequently said slide f together `with the seat g, and means fixed to said pedestal a for moving the beam or slide f forward or backward together with seat g, substantially as described.
2. In a stool for cigar-makers or other workmen, the combination with a seat g, of a pedestal e, a sleeve Z; revoluble with the seat g about said pedestal a, a guide el carried by said pedestal a, a beam or slide f movable in the inside of said guide d in a longitudinal direction, a vertical pin 7i connected to the inner end of said beam or slide f, a guide 7c rigidly connected to the upper trunnion z' of said pedestal a, said guide being provided with a longitudinal slit s and two lateral outwardly curved slits e', the several slits being adapted to receive the pin 7L of said guide d, so as to guide said pin z. and consequently said slide f together with the seat g, a lever a pivoted to said slide and to the sleeve Z) surrounding the pedestal a, said lever n having on one side an arm a carrying a counter-weight o and on the other side an arm a2 connected with a pedal a3, substantially as described.
3. In a stool for cigar-makers, or other workmen, the combination with a seat, of a pedestal or column a, a sleeve Z) revolublo with said seat g about said pedestal, means connected to said sleeve for moving said seat forward, backward, in acurve concentric to the pedestal, or in a direction parallel to the bench or worktable byy means of a guide 7J forcibly movingsaid seat g, and means for rendering said guide 7c independent from the. movement of said seat g, substantially as described.
4. In a stool for cigar-makers or other workmen, the combination with a seat y. of a pedestal a, a sleeve b revoluble with the seat g about said pedestal a, a guide (l carried by'said pedestal a, a beam or slide f movable in the inside of said guide al in a longitudinal direction, a vertical pin /1y connected to the inner end of said beam or slide f, a guide c rigidly connected to the upper trunnion z' of said pedestal a, said guide being provided with a longitudinal slit a and two lateral outwardly curved slits c, the several slits being adapted to receive the pin 7L of said guide (Z, so as to guide said pin 7L and consequently said slide f together with the seat g, means fixed to said pedestal a for moving the bea-1n or slide f forward or backward together with seat g, and means for tilting over or moving upwardly said guide 7c about the upper trunnion 2' of the pedestal or column a as a fulcrum, so as to make said guide independent of said seat g, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 26th day of September, 1910, in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
