To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ,M RK THOMAS DENNE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Rushden, Northamptonshire England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Heel-Compressing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in and relating to heel compressing machines of the type in which a blanksupporting table is made to move toward a stationary platen or cross-head to compress the heel blank and thereafter is made to recede to enable the compressed heel to be removed and another blank to be positioned thereon, the movements of the table being usually effected by means of toggle levers.
In accordance with my invention the table ,on which the heel blank is placed is mounted upon a vertically reciprocating crosshead and directly under thelixed die with which the said table is to cooperate, in such a manner that, while participating in the up-anddown movements of the said cross-head, it can also rock on same, means being provided to cause the said table to swing outward automatically toward the position where the operator-is stationed to feed the machine so that the table will be for a brief time held at an angle to the horizontal so that he may have a full and clear view thereof while placing the heel blank thereon. In order to enable the operator to position the blank correctly, the table has removably attached to it those parts of the mold whereby the shaping of the heel seat and the'breast are effected. v
I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawing, in
which a t Figure 1 is a front elevation of my im proved heel compressing machine. Fig. 2 a rear elevation of the upper portion of said machine, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the machine with some parts broken away.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the base or frame of the machine provided with vertical pillars 2 which fixedly carry at their upper endsa head 3. On the pillars I slidably mount a cross-head 1 the central portion of which comprises a rod or spindle 5. The cross-head is supported and its movement controlled by toggle levers 6, 7
' in a manner to behereinafter described.
One end of a link 8 pivotally engages the toggle levers at their point of junction while the other end of said linkis connected to a crank shaft 9 suitably geared to a driving clutch 1O controlled by a treadle or the like 11.
Mounted on the cross-head are two pairs of links 12 adjustable to a slight extent on eccentric pins 13. The links are connected at their inner ends to and control the move ments of blocks 14: slidably mounted in guides 15 on the head and said blocks in turn support andengage the two sides 16 which together with a top plate 17 (fixedly attachedto the head) form the blank mold.
A die support 18 removably carries the breast part 19 and seat part 20 of the blank mold and is formed or provided with a sad dle portion 21 rotatably mounted on the rod 5 in a manner to be hereinafter described.
The upper end of the toggle lever 6 pivotally engages a saddle or bridge piece 22 which forms the lower portion of a split bearing surrounding and supporting the rod 5while between the upper portion of said bearingwhich consists of caps 23 held in engagement with the lower portion by bolts 2 1 or the likeand the rod the before mentioned saddle portion 21 of the die support is mounted so that it may turn about the rod from the blank receiving position (shown in dot-anddash lines in Fig. 3) to the blank compressing position.
The die support 18 is formed or provided with arms 25 or the like the free ends of which are preferably provided with rolls 26 or the equivalent engaging in grooves 27 or slots in a bracket 28 or the like formed or provided on a vertically movable rod 29. The said rod is slidably carried at about its upper end in a bracket 30 while its lower end is slidably guided in a sleeve 31 or the equivalent. The upper end of the rod is provided with a lug 32 or the like carrying adjusting screws 33 which on the depression of the rod contact with the upper face of the bracket thereby stopping the depression of the rod. To the lower end of the rod one end of a tension spring 34 is adjustably attached the other end of said spring being fastened to the sleeve 31 or other suitable part of the machine.
I form or provide the cross beam with a lug or bracket 35 in which is mounted a carrier 36 to slidably retain an ejector bar or finger 37. One end of said bar engages a lever 38 pivotally mounted on a spindle 39 provided on the cross beam, said lever being normally held in contact with a stop 4-0 by a spring 41 or the equivalent. The
lower end of the lever has attached to it a lug 4:2 or the like which as said lever descendswith the cross beam-engages a pivotally mounted trip or catch 43-moru1ted on one of the pillars or other suitable part of the machine-which through the instrumentality of the lever forces the ejector forward causing it to strike the already compressed blank from its seat.
The operation of the machine is as fol-V lows :Assuming the die support to be in its blank receiving position (shown in dot-anddash lines in Fig. 3) and a heel to be placed with its seat ()n starting th'e'machine the toggle levers 6, 7 commence to open forcing the cross beam upward and as the rod 29 is held in its lowermost position by the spring 3i the die support 18 turns about said rod the rolls 26 sliding in a horizontal direction in the 7 slots of the bracket 28. The die support continues to rotate until the edge of its saddle 21 engages the upper face of the'bridge a piece 22 thereby arresting its turning move- V the blank enters each otherby "holder the togg the cross beam die support and rod down-V -ward, the rod continues ment.
