MACHINE FOR BENDING PIPES.
Be it known that I, FRANZ TROSIENER, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Cologne, Germany, have invented new and. useful Improvements in Machines for Bending Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine of novel construction for making pipe coils of various forms in a simple and reliable manner.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved machine with some of the parts omitted; Fig. 2 a plan thereof; Fig. 3 an enlarged section through one of the rollers; Fig. A a detail of the pipe supporting means; Fig. 5 a side elevation of a modification of the machine; Fig. 6 a plan thereof; F ig. 7 a side elevation of a further modification, and Fig. 8 a plan thereof.
The letter a, indicates a stationary table having legs 70, and supporting a disk 2), which is partly cut away, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Upon a shaft a, centered within disk 29, is mounted a relatively fixed sectional roller 7", and an oscillating arm h, carrying a roller a), which is located in proximity to roller f. Roller f, is grooved corresponding to the contour of the pipe A, to be bent. Table u, carries a vise b, the jaws of which may be adjusted on rails cl, by means of screw spindles c, and are adapted to securely hold the unbent section of pipe A. In addition to vise I), an auxiliary vise 9, may be provided, while a roller 1", serves as a support for the pipe and facilitates its movement.
Concentric to table a, there are arranged a pair of parallel track rails 1, supported by posts 2, the lower ends of which are received within corresponding recesses c, of the foundation 9. On the track travels a carriage to, having wheels 75, said carriage, in turn, supporting, by rollers 3 an axially movable platform or slide to.
Carriage w, is connected to arm h, by a rod 77,, so as to participate in the movement of said arm which is imparted to the latter by a crank so. To the axle of this crank is secured a toothed wheel 2, meshing into the toothed rim 2, of stationary disk p. gage pipe A. A suitable gage s, slidably mounted upon a rail 0, may be used for determining the proper position of coil Z, upon carriage w. Plate 79, is provided with a series of sockets 6, adapted for the reception of pins which may be inserted, if it is desired to bend pipe A, into an irregular shape.
In use, the free pipe-end is clamped between vises Z), and g, and crank 00, is turned to carrylever h, together with roller 12, and carriage to, around axle a. During this movement pipe A, is bent partly around roller f, so as to form one member of the coil desired. The upper section of roller f, is then removed and the previously formed coil Z, is hooked to lever 2'. The outer arm of the latter is now depressed to lift the newly coiled pipe-section out of engagement with roller 7, whereupon said section is pushed upon carriage to. Coil Z, is finally turned upon the carriage through an angle of 180, and the carriage is returned to its initial position, so that the operation may be repeated.
For regulating the pitch of the coil, an elbow lever 3, may be pivoted to slide to. Upon the lower arm of lever 3, rests the completed coil, while its upper arm constitutes a handle. In order to maintain lever 8, in any desired position, a post 4, carried by slide w, is provided with notches 5, adapted for the reception of a suitable lock pin against which the upper lever arm rests.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and G, the means for turning arm h, consist of a pair of ropes 9 and 12, secured thereto and running over rollers 8, hung to posts 2. The free ends of ropes 9 and 12 are secured to a barrel 11. It will be seen that by turning this barrel in one or the other direction, lever it, may be advanced into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6, or it may be returned to its original position. The operation for bending the pipe coil is the same as that previously described.
\Vith the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the circular track is replaced by rollers 71, carried by posts 1%, which are fitted into recesses c. Rollers n, which support the bent coilsection facilitate the movement thereof, so as to permit a ready adjustment. If it is desired to provide the pipe with but a single bend, short rollers 11, may be employed as illustrated in full lines Fig. 8. If, however, the pipe is to be provided with a number of bends arranged side by side, l'ongrollers 71/, may be used, (dotted lines, Fig. 8). After a coil has been formed by turning arm h, about roller f, the pipe is released, turned, and then shifted laterally. By correspondingly setting Vises b, and g, to grasp the pipe, and returning lever h, the next bend may be produced. The completed coil may finally be removed by means of a rope 7 secured to barrel 7.

A machine for bending pipes, comprising an axle, a first grooved and relatively fixed roller mounted thereon, an arm rotatable on said axle, a second roller carried by said arm, a vise adapted to engage the free end of the pipe to be bent, a carriage, a slide supported by the carriage, and means for operatively connecting said carriage to the arm.
