UNITED STATES 'PATENT oFFlcE.
AHTON WAGENBACH, OI ELIBERFELD, GERMANY.
GBIPPING DEVICE FOR BENDI QTG MAORI-LIES.
Application filed December 7, 1925, Serial No. 78,875, and in Germany August 2% 1924.
For bending iron rods, bending devices are known with motor or hand drive, consisting of a sole plate with a Jpjoppet or holder and with a swinging ben ng lever, holding by bolt the rod which is to be bent. For adjusting the machine to difierent s zes of the rods and difierent grades of bending, the bolts can be put into different holes in the bending lever, especially in large bend ing machines. In smaller bending devices the exact holding of the rods was not pos-.
sible. In both cases the adjustment was very inexact, so that the wanted curvatures could not be made accurately and relatively long rod ends were wasted because certain length of the rod was wanted for holding the same.
The invention provides a spiral gripping part, which is put onto the bendin be t of the bending lever and can be turne so as to touch by its circumference the rod, to be bent, so that it holds the latter with absolute security at the beginning of the bending by its eccentric circumferential surface in such a way that the rod is pressed against the usual roller, placed in the swinging center of the bending lever. Hereby the rod can be surely fastened at its extreme end without losing a useless piece of rod, and a totally round curvature around the roller is obtainable, as it is wanted, for example, for concrete reinforcing rods. Rods of different sizes can be equally surely fastened in consequence of the great adaptability of the spiral gripping part.
Advantages are obtainable, if two or more spiral gripping parts of diiferent sizes are provided, which can be put onto the bending olt or, on a roller put on that bolt. By these means it is possible to bend rods of diiferent sizes with only one hole provided for the bending bolt. 'This design is especially useful for hand-driven bending devices.
The drawing shows the invention in two examples.
Fig. 1 is a top view of the essential arts of a bending machine driven by motor irce.
Fig. 2 is a top view of a bending device driven by hand,
Fig. 3 shows a small spiral ripping part of a bending device driven by hand.
In the bending machine according to Fig.
" place or made in one Through the plate passes the bending axle 3,
which is driven mechanically and carries the bending lever 4 rovided with several holes. A roller 5, whic fixes the diameter of the hook to be bent, is put onto the end in of the bending axle 3. A bending bolt 6 1s put into one of the holes of the bending lever 4 .and onto the said bolt 6 a spiral gripping part 7 is put. The said part 7 before the beginning of the bending process is turned around the bolt 6 in such a way that its circumferenceis laid exactly against the end of the rod, an'd'during the bending process in the direction shown by the arrow, it is pressed fast, so that the rod is pressed against the roller 5 and bent around it.
The action of the bending device, with hand-drive according to Figs. 2 and 3, is essentially the same with the difi'erence, only, that the pin 3 of the bending lever 4 is a simple fixed pin and the bending lever is the bending bolt 6. For thick rods the smaller spiral gripping part 7" Fi 3 can be used, which part immediatel y fi s t2) the bolt 6. Thereby rods of different sizes can be held without pinning anew the bending bolt. The said"bolt can be riveted to its piece with the bending lever.
I claim: I 1. A gripping device for bending machines, comprismg a swingablebending lever, a circular part provided on the swinging center of said bending lever, a bending bolt on said lever, a bending roller on sald bending bolt, and a ripping part with a spiral circumference, a apted to be rotatably supported by saidroller so as to press a work-piece against said circular part.
2. A. gripping device for bending machines, comprising a bending axle, a swingable bending lever on said axle, a freely rotatable roller on said axle, and a freely rotatable grippi? part with spiral circumtatable' roller 11 said axle, ebending bolt on ference on lever, adagrl'gl to preea;- a said lever, an freely rotataBle gr? ing work-piece aainet said 1y rotatable part with spiral circun iei enee on sai olt roller. ada ted to ressfa work-pieceagainst said I 3. 'A gn pi g evice for free y rotate 1e roller.
