Description

@tutti @time JOHN L. RUSSELL, OF
PRAIRIE CITY, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 99,005, dated January 18, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN KEY-HOLE GUARDS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ons L. RUSSELL, of Prairie City, in the county of Jasper, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Key-Hole Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a tull, clear, and exact`description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a safe and efficient means for protecting door-locks from the depredations of thieves and burglars; and
It consists in arranging a sliding guard for covering the key-hole, and also a catch for holding the key-hole guard in place, both slide and catch being reversible, so that the slide may be used on either side of the lock, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
` In the accompanying drawingvided with my sliding guards and catch.
Figure 2 is a, view of the guard detached from the lock.
Similar letters -of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the lock.
B represents the key-hole.
C iS the sliding reversible guard.
D is the reversible sliding catch.
On each side of the lock, a recess, E, is made, en-
closing the key-hole,`sufciently deep to receive the full thickness of the guard C.
Across the edge of the l'ock, from one of the recesses E to the other, another recess or channel is made for receiving the sliding catch D. The edges of this catch are dovetailing, and the recess is made to match, as indicated by the dotted lines in fig. 1.
F F represent cavities in the side of the guard,
intowhich the end or point of the catch enters, for holding the guard in place. F holds the guard over the key-hole, and F holds it in its recess when it is drawn back and not in use.
This guard is designed for all locks placed on the inside of doors, as a protection to inmates of dwellings and rooms.
The guard is shoved in between the door and the lock, and may be used on either the right or left-hand edge of the door, according as thelock may be placed. The catch D may be used from either side of the lock,
f so as to adapt it to the guard in either position. Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a lock pro- This is an extremely cheap and simple method of preventing door-locks from being picked or tampered with from the outside.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv Combining a reversible guard, C, and a reversible catch, D, so that the slide may be used on either side of the lock, in the mannen described.
JOHN L.' RUSSELL.
