Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HAcKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mulberry, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved harness buckle and more particularly to a buckle which is particularly designed for use upon the lines or reins of double team harness at the point of connection thereto of the strap, and has for its object to provide means for connecting the bit strap to the buckle to prevent said strap from turning or twisting.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a buckle of very simple construction whereby when the straps are connected thereto there is no projecting part upon which the harness or fly net can be caught.

lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a buckle constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrating the application of the same; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the buckle.

Referring more particularly to the drawing 5 indicates the parallel longitudinal side bars of the buckle which are connected at their ends on one edge by the transverse bars 6. Adjacent to one end of the buckle the side bars 5 thereof are connected at their upper edges by a body plate 7. From reference to Fig. 2 it will be observed that the end of bars 6 are connected to the side bars 5 at their lower edges, thus providing a space between the end bars and the body plate through which the rein R is adapted to be extended in arranging the buckle thereon. The edge of the plate 7 at one end thereof is inclined with respect to the side bars 5 as shown at 7 and said plate is provided with a slot 8 which extends in parallel relation to this inclined edge of the plate. A tongue plate and projects therefrom at right angles to the slot 8, the outer end of said tongue being disposed above one of the side bars 5.

The buckle as above described is of one piece integral construction and may be made of any preferred material and in any desired size. A pin or stud 10 is fixed at one end in the plate 7 adjacent to the inclined edge 7 thereof and at the junction of the tongue 9 with said plate. This pin depends from the under side of the buckle and is adapted to extend through perforations provided in the rein R and the bit strap B.

In Fig. 1 of the drawings the buckle is shown applied in operative position. It is more particularly adapted for use on double team harness, one of the buckles being arranged upon each of the reins or lines. After the buckle has been suitably positioned on the rein, the bit strap B is extended beneath the tongue 9 and through the slot 8 in the'body plate 7 The end of the strap is then disposed over the tongue 9 and stitched at its edges to the body of said strap. Thus a rigid connection of the strap to the buckle is afforded by the tongue 9 which prevents any turning or twisting of said strap. It will further be obvious that as the rein R extends beneath the body plate 7 and beneath the strap B, this tongue also acts to hold the rein or line in position between the side bars 5 of the buckle. When the bit strap has been properly connected to the buckle and the end thereof stitched over the tongue 9, all projecting parts are covered and a smooth surface is provided thereby preventing the liability of the other portions of the harness or fly net catching upon the buckle in the manipulation of the reins. A perfectly rigid connection of the bit strap to the buckle is also provided thereby holding said strap in ,its proper position and preventing the same becoming entangled with the other strap which extends in an opposite direction from the other of the reins.

\Vhile my improved buckle is especially devised for use upon double team harness, it will be understood that the device may also be employed in other instances where a buckle of such construction would be found particularly advantageous.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and operation of my improved 9 is formed upon the edge 7 of the body 1 harness buckle will be readily understood.

The device is extremely simple, may be manufactured at a very low cost and is very durable and highly eflicient in practical use.

While I have shown and described the preferred form and construction of the buckle, it will be understood that the same is susceptible of considerable modification within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the essential feature or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1. A buckle of the character described formed from a single piece of material and comprising parallel longitudinal bars and transverse end bars connecting the same at one edge, a body plate connecting the bars at the other edge thereof and adjacent to one end of the same, said plate having a diagonal slot therein, a harness strap ex tending between the end bars and said body plate, an angular-1y disposed tongue rigidly formed on one edge of the body plate, a strap disposed through the slot in said body plate and folded over said tongue to afford a rigid connection of the latter strap to the buckle, and a pin depending from the body plate adapted to project through an opening in each of said straps.

A buckle of the character described formed from a single piece of material comprising parallel side bars, transverse bars connecting the side bars at their ends, and at one of their longitudinal edges, a body plate connecting said side bars at their other longitudinal edges and adjacent to one of said transverse connecting bars, said plate being provided with a diagonal slot, a tongue integrally formed on one edge of said plate and located at the approximate center of the buckle, said tongue extending at right angles to said slot, a strap threaded between the transverse connecting bars and said body plate, a second strap disposed through the slot in said body plate and folded over upon itself and upon said tongue, the end of said strap being stitched to the body thereof to inclose the tongue to provide a rigid connection between the strap and the buckle, and a pin fixed in said body plate at the juncture of the tongue therewith and extending through alined openings in said straps substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
