Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. CHARLES, of the town of Palo Alto, county of Santa Clara, State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Razors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a razor of the type in which the handle extends longitudinally with respect to a blade provided with a guard and which may be automatically stropped.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a razor with a blade longitudinally pivoted on a handle wi th means for correctly and automatically stropping the blade which is provided with a guard and means for locking the blade rigidly on the handle and also for releasing the blade for stropping.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which Will be more fully hereinafter speoified in preferred form.
In the drawings Figure 1. is a plan view of a strop and a razor embodying the l'eatures of my invention. Fig. 2. is a partial longitudinal section through the center of the razor with the guard in position against the blades. Fig. 3. is a partial end view showing the guard in position against the blades.
A are the two blades of the razor and are firmly held in position in bladc holdef B. Rigidly attached to blade holder B is a flanged pulley C. Blade holder and pulley are revolubly attached to a spindle D. Spindle D is an extension of and is integral with handle E. Blade holder B and pulley 0 are retained in position on the spindle D by means of sleeve F which is fastened to the spindle.
G is a locking sleeve, loose on handle and spindle, but with a limited movement.
II is a pin set rigidly into the spindle D with both ends projecting slightly therefrom to engage two diametrically opposite slots K in the inner surface of the locking sleeve G.
I is a locking pin and is set rigidly into the locking sleeve, one end projecting' sufliciently to engage a hole made to receive it in the pulley C.
J is a helical spring the purpose of which is to force the locking sleeve against the pulley.
P is a combed guard plate and is pivoted on handle E by means of pin Q.
R is a latch movably attached to guard plate P and furnished with two hooked fingers S which may be slipped over the corners of blades A.
T is a lug on latch R and serves as a handlc when the latch is operatcd.
U is a spring iastened to the guard at V and engaging with both ends the latch R. Its purpose is to retain the latch in the position shown.
In the strop, Fig. 1, L are clamps, M is the strop, and N is a flexible cord attached by its ends to the two clamps.
When the mechanism is in position for shaving, sec Fig. 2, the guard plate P is held firmly against the blades by the hooks S on latch R. Locking pin I in sleeve G engages its hole in the side of pulley C and is kept there by the action of spring J. Sleeve G is prevented from rotating by the in H which engages the slots K. Thus the lflade-holder B is fimnly locked to the handle E and the guard to the blades, the whole mechanism acting as a unit. When it is desired to strop the bladcs, the guard is released by grasping latch handle T and pulling the latch out until the fingers S are clear of the blade when the guard may be swung away from the blades to the position shown in Fig. 1. Then the blade holder B is released by draW- ing back the locking slceve G thereby withdrawing pin I from the pulley C. T0 prevent the sleeve G from being snapped forward by the spring J it is drawn back until it clears pin H, as in Fig. 1, and is then partly turned to dispose the pin H out of alinement with the slots K, and the sleeve is held by the pin in the position shown.
The razor is brought into position on the strop and the cord N wound once around the pulley C as shown in Fig. 1. When the razor is moved forward and backward along the strop, the action of the pulley upon the cord is such that the blade is extended in a direction opposite to that in which the razor is moving and is pressed against the strop. When the end of a stroke is reached and the rctum stroke is bcgun, the action of the cord on the pulley swings the blade into proper position the instant the return stroke begins, thereby efiectually preventing any cutting of the strop. After the blades have been swung, the cord slidcs on the pulley for the entire stroke, the friction pressing each blade in turn tightly against the strop.

Then the guard plate is swung about its pivot until it lies against the blades when by pulling out the latch and then releasing it, the blades Will be grasped by the hooked fingers S I have shown the cord N W0und once around the pulley but it may be wound more than once if deemed advisable. The pulley C is shown to be cylindrical but its face may be of irregular outline.
'I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of devices herein shown and described as it is evident that modifications may be made Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the nature and 0bjects of my invention and the manner of its operation, what I claim as new and desire A; to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a *razor of the class described, the oombination of a handle having a spindle projecting longitudinally from one end thereof, a blade holder revolubly mounted on said spindle, means for locking said blade holder to the handle, a pulley on the said blade holder for engagement by an operating cord, and a gnard pivotally 1nounted on the handle for angular movement toward and from the blade holder.

4. In a razor, the combination of a handle, a blade holder projeoting longitudinally therefrom, and revolubly mounted thereo'n, said blade holder carrying a pulley adapted to be engaged by an actuating cord, a member slidable on thehandle and having means to look the holder rigidly to the handle, a
spring to move said member into locking position and means for holding said member in retracted position.
5. In a razor, the combination of a handle, a pivot projecting longitudinally from one end thereof, and carrying a radially projecting pin, a blade holder revolubly monnted on said pivot, and provided at its inner end with a cord engaging pulley having in its end a seat, a sleeve to slide on the handle and carrying a longitudinally projecting pin to enter said seat in the end of the pnlley, said sleeve being recessed and having a longitudinal groove to receive said pin on the pivot whereby the sleeve may be retained in retracted position, and a coil spring within the recess in the sleeve and surrounding said pivot.
6. In a razor, the combination of a handle, a blade holder projecting longitudinall therefrom, a guard to co-act With the blade in said holder and having its inner end pivoted to the handle, a slidable latch plate having a slot and pin connection with the outer on free end of the guard, and formed with a finger pieoe, and with hook-shaped ends to engage the outer extremity of the blades, said latch plate being also formed With oppositely arranged apertured ears, and a spring wire fixed at its center to the guard and arranged transversely thereof, and having its ends arranged in the'apertured ears on the latch plate.
