LEONA-RD THORN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 98,897, dated January 18, 1870; antedated May 25,1868.
IMPROVED STEAM-DIGESTER FOR RENDERING LARD, 84c.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEONARD THORN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Steam-Digester; and I do hereby deof any suitable material, and of a deodorizing grate,
C, in connection with the steam-boiler j and steampipes e e e.
The digester may also be const'ructedwith a double bottom, Figure 1."
Figure 2 represents the internal structure of the digester A, with the steam-pipes, with outlets or jets s s s 8 into the substances to be operated upon. Figure 3 is a deodorizing-grate, constructed with hollow tubes or grate-bars, with openiligs s s s s for the escape and consumption of the noxious gases from the digester A.
Figure 4 is a cover, opening downward on a hinge for the man-hole T, having an outside arch-bar 55,
with handles 4 4, and bar nut 33, thus enabling the operator to quickly adjust the man-hole plate without the use of wrenches or other appliances.
Figure 5 represents the bottom distributing-pipe 2 2, that can be used inside or outside. 1
he bottom mau-hole'plate c is hinged to open up- Attached to this plate, on the inside,'is a wire or rod, w, extending upward through the top of digester A, with handle attached, to open the man-hole, in discharging the substances treated in said digester.
Several of the steam-pipes within the digester extend from end to end thereof, and are firmly attached thereto, giving additional strength and-safety to the digester. Aportion of the pipes project up through the bottom of the digester, with jets to give a supply of steam to the substances treated.
The bottom of the 'digester may be constructed double, for drying-purposes.
My steam-digester, as above described, together with a cotton or other suitable gasket, to renderthe same steam-tight, I use for rendering tats, oils, meats,
grain, meal, or any substances which may be utilized by my process of steam-heating or disintegration.
Y I also use the digester as anamalgamating-pan, for the preciousmetals. When thus used, I direct the steam-jets downward upon the bottom of the digester,
in order .to agitate the quicksilver and pulverized ores, thereby securing a mo'rethorough mixture anda more perfect amalgamation.
In using the digester for many purposes, I omit the use of thereturn-pipes 2 2 2 2, and in their stead I use only the main steam-pipe 1, giving it a winding course one-half way round from the top, to near the bottom of the digester, so as to throw the steam on the bottom of the boiler in an oblique direction, thereby efi'eotually stirring the substances treated. I draw ofi,
from the bottom of the digester, the substances treated by means of a conductor.
' In constructing my man-hole door, I use a double plate both to hold and protect the gasket.
- Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A steam-dig'ester, with steam coming directly from a boiler in connect-ion with gas or odor-discharge and burning tubular grate-pipes, substantially as described.
2. The bottom man-hole plates or doors of both man-holes and attachments, in combination with my steam-digester, substantially as described.
3. The method of distributing by means of pipes, as described, upon the substances treated, substantially as described.
4. The arch-bar, with handles and bar-nut for C105.
ing man-holes, substantially as described.
5. The process of discharging'the substances treated into a conductor, substantially as described.
6. The construction of the man-hole door with hinges and double plates, substantially as described.
7. The apparatus, as a whole, in its method of operation, substantially as described.
s LEONARD THORN. Witnesses: i RILY P. WILSON, WILSON S. WOLF.
