Description

.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS JORY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WINDOW-LOCK.
' ing drawing.
This invention relates to combined lifts and locks for windows and the principal object of the same is to provide a simple lift. and lock adapted for use in connection with v drop windows of vehicles, which can only be operated from within a vehicle by using' the lifts and which will normally rigidly lock the window to the frame so that rattling thereof is prevented.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein y Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the improved window lift and lock, the lock being shown in a released position. Fig. 2 is a similar view the lock being in a window fastening position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a window and frame, the window being fastened to the frame by the improved lock. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the strucp ture shown in Fig. 2.
The improved combined lift and lock is especially adapted for use in connection with drop windows for vehicles in which the windows are dropped into a pocket in the frame when opened and when closed are raised from the pocket and rested on the sill.
In the accompanying drawing the frame 1 and the window 2 have been shown fragmentary, the lower rail of the sash carrying the improved lock, the latching lever of which is in engagement with a bar of the frame to retain the window closed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the improved combined window lift and lock comprises an elongated flat plate 3 having a thickened upstanding central portion 4 projecting from its upper longitudinal edge and in which a recess 5 is formed. Said plate Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led December 19, 1910. Serial N o. 598,033.
Patented Apr. 4, 1911.
is provided with a longitudinal row of openings 6 for the reception of suitable fasteners for attaching the plate to the lower rail 7 of the sash. An offset lip extension 8 depends from the lower edge of plate 3 and a transverse slot 9 extends through said lip and 'plate 3 and into said recess 5. At the lower portion of recess 5, plate 3 is provided lwith a pair of laterally projecting ears 10 on its rear surface. A lug 11 projecting laterally from the upper portion of a latching lever 12 is pivotally attached to ears 10. The lower end of lever 12 isprovided with a l1p 13 that engages a bar 14 carried by the sill 15 of the window frame to lock the sash thereto, A spring 16 preferably spiral, is seated 1n recess 5 and bears against a tripping head 17 at the upper end of lever 12 and normally holds said lever in engagement with bar 14.
The upper longitudinal edge of plate 3 is provided with two sets of ears 1S which are separated by the projectinor portion 4 and to which similarly arranger sets of ears 19 projecting from the lower longitudinal edge of a plate 2O are pivotally connected. The upper edge of said plate 20 is provided with a longitudinal groove 21 in which a fiexible handgrip 22 is riveted or otherwise fastened. Said handgrip may be of leather or other similar material.
The recessed portion 4 of plate 3 and the head 17 of lever 12 are overlapped by the central portion of the lower longitudinal edge of plate 20, so that said plate 20 will hold the saidrlever in a released position when plates 3 and 20 are in the relative positions shown in Fig. 1.
In use, assuming the parts of the invention to be in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that by raising the handgrip 22, plate 2O will be rocked to the position shown in Fig. l so that the central portion of its lower edge will contact with the tripping head 17 of lever 12 and rock said lever to release lip 13 from bar 14.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the combined lifting and locking device is arranged on the inner side of t-he sash and therefore can only be operated from the interior of the vehicle. It will also be seen that the handgrip 22 in addition to operating the plate 20 to release lever 12 is also used to raise the sash, thereby providing simple means whereby the unlocking and raising of the sash can be readily performed With one hand.
What I claim as my invention is l. A Window lift and lock comprising a stationary plate provided With laterallyprojecting sets of ears on one longitudinal edge, said plate being provided with an outstanding recessed portion between said sets of ears, said plate having a clearance slot that communicates with said recess, a latching lever pivotally connected to the said plate and movable in said slot and having a head that enters said recess, a movable plate provided With ears that are hinged to the first-mentioned ears and adapted to operate said lever, and a hand-grip carried by said movable plate. n
2. A Window lift and lock comprising a stationary plate having an offset laterallyprojecting recessed portion extending beyond one longitudinal edge thereof, said plate being provided With a transverse slot that extends from said recessed portion to the opposite longitudinal edge of the plate, a latching lever pivotally connected to said plate and movable through said slot, said lever being provided With a head adapted to be rocked into said recessed portion, a latch releasing plate hinged to the stationary plate for rocking the head of the lever into said recessed portion, and a handgrip'carried by said latch releasing plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in presence of' tWo Witnesses.
