Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH AMERIoUs INGRAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Optical Illusion Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in amusement devices and embraces the construction of a simple device capable of being used for instruction or for amusement.

One of the objects of the invention is the construction of a simple and inexpensive device having some of the characteristics of a puzzle and adapted to be used for training children in the art of drawing and in the art of writing.

With the above and other objects in View the invention embraces certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings and clearly described in the following specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device set up in position for use, Fig. 2 is an end elevatlon thereof, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a joint, Fig. 4: is a plan view, and showing the device extended, Fig. 5 is a View showing the device folded.

Referring to the accompanying drawings 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 denote hinged flaps or portions connected at their ends so as to form a continuous body ortion. Flap 1 is formed with an opening% located centrally thereof and provided on its outer end with a minor joint flap 8; flap 3 is provided with a pad 9 of paper and formed with a joint tongue 10; flap 4 is provided with a mirror 11 and formed with a joint tongue 12, which tongue is engaged by the end flap 8; the remainder of the flaps are provided with unbroken surfaces.

The device is set up in the position indicated in Fig. 1 by placing the outer end of the flap 6 in engagement with the joint tongue 10 and placing the end flap 8 in engagement with the joint tongue 12, thereby bringing the mirror 11 into an oblique posi- 1 tion with relation to the pad 9 and bringing the opening 7 over said pad. The flaps 5 and 6 serve to effectively brace the device so that it can be held in a practically rigid position.

On the outer side of the flap 1 a suitable figure 13 is located and any suitable number of words may be attached thereto by means of a printed paper.

In using the device the operator places a pencil on the pad 9 as shown in Fig. 1 and endeavors to draw on said pad the design or figure or write the words shown on the outer side of the flap 1, while he or she is looking at the mirror, which reflects the pad and the movements of the pencil thereon. It will be seen that the device therefore afl'ords means whereby children may derive the benefits of solving simple puzzles and derive the benefits of instruction resulting from the effort to execute, while looking in the mirror, certain words.

Having described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the character described a lurality of flaps hinged end. to end said aps adapted to be folded into horizontal and vertical positions, a writing pad secured to the lower horizontal flap, a mirror secured to one of said vertical flaps and an opening in the upper horizontal flap through which the mirror may reflect rays of light from said writing pad.

2. In a device of the character described a series of flaps hinged end to end, said flaps adapted to be folded into an annular frame consisting of horizontal and vertical sides, a writing pad secured to the lower horlzontal flap, a mirror secured to one of said vertical flaps at an angle to said writing pad an opening in said upper horizontal flap through which rays of llght from said writing pad may be reflected.

In a device of the character described consisting of a series of flaps joined end to end and adapted to be folded into horizontal cured to one of said vertical flaps at an 010- lique angle to said writing pad and an opening in the 11 per horizontal flap through which rays 0 light may be reflected from said Writmg pad.
