To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. OVERBY, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mellette, in the county of Spink and new and Improved Hallie-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact desoription.
..The invention is an improvement in hame fasteners, and has in view a relatively strong, compact fastener which is readily and easily locked and disenga ed, but unlikely to be accidentally released, and which will operate to hold the hame strap close to the collar, providing a neat and effective connection. The fastener is further constructed so as to be easily applied to hames of the customary type.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a front view of the lower portion of a pair of hames having my improved hame fastener applied thereto, the fastener being shown in full lines locked and in dotted lines released. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the fastener latch; and Fig. 3 is a face view of the same, partly in central vertical section.
For the purpose of illustrating the nature and application of my improved fastener, I have shown the hames .5, 5, one of which is provided at its lower end with the customary clevis 6, through which the hame To the other hame I apply my improved fastener, which comprises a face plate 7 a and a locking arm 8, the face plate conforming to the shape of the lower end portion of the hame, and at its upper end having an outwardly offset lug or projection 9, which engages over the outer edge of the hame and is provided with a latch recess 10. The face plate 7 is secured to the front face of the hame by screws or other equivalent devices 11, one
of which is arranged at the lower end of the plate and serves as a pivot pin or fulcrum, for the locking arm 8, this end of the locking arm being bifurcated to receive the entire thickness of the hame. The arm 8 is L-shaped, having a sharp bend 12 adjacent to its pivoted end to provide a link opening between theiface plate and the arm when the latter is moved to the position shown in the drawing figures. The outer upwardly-extending portlon of the arm has a socket or bore extending through the end,

An operating member 15 for retracting the latch bolt and preventing it from turning in the socket is rigid with the bolt and passes through a slot 16 in the front face of the arm, where it is provided with a button or other suitable enlargement for engaging it with the fingers. The outer end of the latch bolt is beveled and arranged to contact with the outer, under edge of the lug 9, and snap into the latch recess 10 when the arm is swung upwardly to extend alongside the hame. To prevent the accidental release of the arm, as by the engagement of the button with some projectin member, a guard flange 17 is arranged at t e outer side thereof and extends along the length of the arm. A link or ring 18, through which the hame strap 7 is passed, is adapted to pass over the locking arm and engage in the angle thereof, as shown in Fig. 1, at which point the arm has a groove 19 to prevent the links displacement. The link has an angular bend in its length to throw the end of the hame strap to which it is attached, well to the collar, whereby a neat and effective connection at this point is provided. To release the hames it is only necessary to retract the latch bolt by means of the button, when the arm will drop by gravity to the dotted position and allow the link to drop off, allowing the hame strap to hang down at the opposite side. The arm by reason of its angular bend carries the link when dropped, well over toward the opposite hame, whereby the hame strap is sufficiently slackened to allow the link to slide from the arm. Thus, the releasing of the hames requires no other manual operation than drawing down the bolt button sufficiently to disengage the bolt. By passing the link over the arm and swinging it upwardly with sufiicient force to cause the latch bolt to spring into the latch recess 10, the hames are effectively secured together.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a hame fastener, a face plate adapted to be secured to one of the hames, having an offset lug at its upper end to engage over and against the edge of the hame, and provided witha latch recess, a locking arm fulcrumed to the lower end of the face plate, having a relatively sharp bend adjacent to its point of connection, a spring-pressed bolt slidable in a socket in the outer end of the arm and arranged to snap into said recess, an operating member for the bolt, rigid therewith and passing through a slot in the arm, and a hame strap link adapted to pass over the arm and engage in the angle thereof, with the link angularly bent to hold.

2. In a hame fastener, a hame plate, a latch. member fixed relatively to and carried by the plate, and an L-shaped locking lever having at its upper end a retractable latch member to engage with the firstnamed latch member, and at its lower end fulcrumed near its extremity to the hame plate to swing down of its own weight when the latch members are released, the lever when engaged standing out at the angle thereof from the plate to provide an opening to receive the hame link,
3. In a hame fastener, a hame face plate having a lug at its upper end ofl'setto engage over the edge of the hame and provided with a latch member, a locking lever fulcrumed to the lower end of the face plate, having an angular bend closely adjacent to its point of connection, a spring-pressed latch bolt carried by the outer end of the arm and arranged to snap into engagement with the latch member of the lug, and a hame strap link adapted to pass over said arm and seat in the angle thereof, and having a bend in its length arranged to hold the hame strap well to the collar.
