Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DOUGLAS P. Fmmmo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates, more especially, to an improvement on the metal-bound box which forms the subject of reissued Letters Patent of the United States No. 12,800, dated May 26, 1908, to E. E. Flora; and it is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blank from which the box-body is formed; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the two similar boxheads; Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken plan view of one end of the complete box, without the lid, showing my im proved means for securing the parts together in their assembled relation, and Fig. 1 is a broken section on line 4, Fig. 3.

The box of the aforesaid patent is formed of a blank 5 composed of a series of strips or sheets 6, of veneer, fiber-board or analogous light stock, connected together in spaced relation by trough-shaped strips 7 7 of sheet-metal having flanges 8 extending from the inner edges of the troughs in which theend-portions of the sheets are contained and secured; and the flanges form abutments for the box-heads 9, to confine them against displacement in the outward direction. When these boxes are furnished in knockdown condition to the trade or user, the

latter assembles the parts by bending the blank between the sheets 6 to form the box body about the heads, which are placed in position for the purpose. To enable the when thus formed, to be packed or filled with material to be contained in it, the assembled parts must be retained in their box-forming relation. This might be accomplished by confining the box, until packed (when the parts may be secured together by fastening down the lid, formed by the right-hand section 6 of the blank), in a suitable frame, though this is not a practically desirable way, or by stapling, riveting, or indenting the flanges 8 to the box-heads, for which operations, however, the user is not ordinarily equipped.

The object of my invention is to provide simple and effective means for readily and conveniently interlocking the heads and sides of the body by the act of introducing the heads int-o place; and this object is accomplished by the followingdescribed means: To the inner face, near each end of each side of the box-body 10, which sides correspond, respectively, with the first (regarded from the left-hand side of Fig. 1) and third sections 6 of the blank, is secured a catch 11, shown as an angular strip of sheet-metal conforming to and extending parallel with the adjacent sections of the binding flanges 8, to form with the latter guides for receiving and confining the boxheads 9, which are introduced endwise into the guides. The angle-strips 11 are slightly spaced, as represented of the strip in Flg. 4, from the sides of the box to which they are secured, for the purpose hereinafter explained. On the inner face of each head 9 are secured angular metal tongues 12 to project beyond the lateral edges of the head near its outer end. With the box-body formed from the blank, by introducing the heads into the aforesaid guides the tongues 12 on the heads enter the spaces behind the catches l1 and thus engage the latter, whereby the heads, in bracing the body, as usual, also securely fasten the parts together against collapsing.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination, a blank for the body of a knockdown-box composed of spaced sheets of veneer or analogous light stock and reinforcing metal binding-strips connecting the sheets along their edge-portions, metal catches on the inner faces of the end-portions of the blank-sections which, when folded, form the sides of the box-body, said catches cooperating with the metal binding to form guides, heads insertible into said guides, and tongues projecting from opposite ends of the heads to engage said catches, for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination, a box having its body formed of veneer or analogous light stock and provided with reinforcing metal binding-strips about its end-portions, metal catches on the inner faces of the end-portions of the sides of said body cooperating with the metal binding thereon to form guides, heads confined in said guides, and

7 tongues projecting from opposite ends of the heads into engagement With said catches for the purpose set forth.

3. In combination, a box having its body formed of sheets of veneer or analogous light stock with trough-shaped metal binding-strips having flanges extending from the inner edges of the troughs in Which the ends of said sheets are contained and secured, angular metal strips, forming catches, secured to the inner faces of the end-portions of the side of said body and cooperating With the adjacent flanges of the binding to form guides, heads confined in said guides, and angular metal tongues projecting from opposite ends of the heads into engagement With said angular strips, for the purpose set forth.
