To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH W. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tents; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to improvements in tents.

The object of the invention is to provide a tent in which the covering may be secured to the ridge pole, and having simple and efiicient means for winding it on said pole.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tent constructed in accordance with this invention, showing a cover in operative or lowered position and with a portion broken out to disclose the ridge pole; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation showing the connection of the pole sections and the covering strips carried thereby, said strips being in section; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a detail end view of a modified form of the invention; Fig. 7 is a detail side elevation thereof; and Fig. 8 is a transverse vertical section thereof.

In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. l a ridge pole 1 is shown havin a main canvas covering 2 preferably folded longitudinally and secured thereto by any suitable means, said pole being journaled at opposite ends in suitable supporting standards 3 and 4 and adapted to be rotated therein whereby the covering 2 may be wound up on and unwound from said pole when desired. The pole 1 shown in Fig. 1 is preferably provided with an operating crank handle 5 detachably connected therewith. This pole 1 may be constructed in a single piece or it may be composed of any desired number of sections as 6 and 7, as shown in Fig. 3, for convenience in packing and transportation, each section having a socket 9 at one end and a tongue 10 at its other end, the tongue on one section being adapted to fit in the socket of the adjacent section and one of said sections being provided with a bayonet-slotted strengthening sleeve 11 slidably mounted thereon and adapted to slip over the joint Connecting the sections and engage a laterally extending stud 12 on the adjacent section the stud 12 retaining it in position on the other section. When the pole is constructed in sections the canvas covering is formed of separably connected strips, each of which is slightly longer than the pole section to which it is to be connected, they are secured thereto in any suitable manner the edges of adjacent strips overlapping where joined together as shown in Fig. 3 and detachably connected by buckles, snaps, buttons or other suitable fastenings for protection against the weather. Any desired number of the sections as 6 and 7may be connected to provide a tent of the desired length.

In the form shown in Figs. 6 and 8 two rollers or poles 13 and 1 1 are provided having one-half of the main canvas secured at one end to one roller and the end of the other half of the canvas secured to the other roller. The two poles are placed side by side and mounted to be rotated by any suitable means for winding or rolling up one-half of the cover on each pole. A strip 15 of canvas or other suitable material is preferably placed lengthwise over the two poles 13 and 1 1 to cover the o ening between them and this strip 15 may be buckled or otherwise fastened arounu the poles when the tent is taken down and the cover members wound thereon to form a convenient case therefor. The double rollers 13 and 141 are preferably journaled at opposite ends in supporting plates as 16 which are preferably detachably mounted on the upper ends of the end standards in any suit-able manner said plates being shown provided on their inner faces with vertically spaced laterally extending apertured lugs 17 and 18 through which the standards pass, the ends of said balls or rollers 13 and 141 being engaged with sockets as 19 on said plates.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention 1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of revolubly mounted ridge poles mounted side by side, covering members secured at one end to each of said poles, and means for closing the space between said poles.

2. In a structure of the class described, the
