FRANK M. EDWARDS, F PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE OLIVE TABLET COMPANY, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO.
PILL-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pill-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a tablet and pill counting and dispensing machine, and the object is to provide means for collecting a certain number of pills or tablets and discharging them from the receptacle.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rotary disk; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base or bottom of the tank; Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of the guard or plate, which is adapted to regulate the discharge of the tablets or pills through the rotary disk; Fig. 5 is a plan View thereof; and Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation of the gearing connection.
A represents a base, and 1, 1 are standards mounted thereon for supporting the tank B, the standards being preferably connected to the bottom 2 of the tank. A plate 3 is mounted on the base having a socket 4 therein and mounted in the socket is a shaft 5, which passes through an opening 6 in the base 2 of the tank, and mounted on the end of the shaft is a rotary disk 7. A bolt 8 is adapted to pass through the base A and plate 3 and to bear against the lower end of the shaft 5 for affording the proper adjustment to the shaft, whereby it will be capable of rotating with the least friction. A gear wheel 9 is mounted on the shaft 5, and intermeshing with the gear wheel 9 is a gear 10 mounted on a driving shaft 11, whereby the shaft 5 is rotated upon the operation of the drive shaft 11.
The rotary disk 7 is provided with perforations or openings 12 around the outer border or surface thereof, in which openings the pills or tablets are adapted to enter. An elongated slot 13 is formed in the bottom of the tank B, which opening registers with the openings 12 as the disk is rotated and the openings pass over the opening 13, thereby discharging the pills or tablets Specification of Letters Patent.

through the opening 13. A chute 14 is connected to the tank, into which the pills are discharged through the opening 13 in the bottom 2. The chute is provided with a hinged cover 15 and a spring 16 connected to the cover and chute tends to close the cover. An arm 17 is connected to the cover and is adapted to be actuated by a cam 18 on the shaft 5.
A plate 19, having arms or projections 20, is adapted to be connected to the wall of the tank B. The projections 20 are provided with elongated slots 21, which permit of the plate being adjusted vertically and bolts 22, passing through the tank B and through the slots 21 in the projections, hold the plate in position. This plate permits one pill to enter each of the openings 12 and allows only the pills that are in the openings in the cylindrical disk to pass through the opening 13. The plate is arranged directly over the opening 13 and above the disk 7. The disk 7 is provided with a certain number of openings and only that number of pills or tablets can pass through the opening 13 at each revolution of the disk, for the reason that the plate prevents of a greater number passing through the openings in the disk or the opening in the base. The object in having the plate adjustable is in case of large tablets or pills, which may extend above the surface of the rotary disk 7. In operation, the drive shaft 11 is caused to rotate by any suitable power, which causes the shaft 5 to rotate through the connection of the gears 9 and 10. As the shaft 5 rotates the disk 7 will rotate, permitting the pills to enter the openings 12 and to pass through the opening 13 in the bottom 2 of the tank, where they are discharged into the chute 14, which is normally held closed by the spring 16 until after all the pills have passed from the disk 7 through the opening 13. Upon the completion of the rotation of the disk the cam 18 on the shaft 5 will engage the arm 17 forcing it downward, thereby opening or raising the cover 15 as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 and permitting the pills or tablets to be discharged from the chute 14.
It is evident that more or less slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a pill machine the combination. with a tank having an opening therein, of a rotary disk for conducting pills to the opening in the tank, a shaft for rotating the disk, a chute connected to the tank for receiving the pills through the opening in the tank, a cover on the chute and: means operated by the shaft for opening the cover on the chute after the pills have been discharged therein for permitting the pills to be discharged from the chute.
2. In a pill machine the combination with a tank having an opening therein, of a disk esaosz for conducting the pills to the opening in the tank where they are discharged, a shaft connected to the disk, means for rotating the shaft, whereby the disk is rotated, a chute on the tank adapted to receive the pills from the opening in the tank, a cover on the chute held normally in closed position, an arm on the cover and a cam on the shaft adapted to actuate the arm upon the rotation of the shaft for opening the cover for discharging the pills from. the chute.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK M. EDlVARDS.
