Description
y Qiitirii gieten getraut @time A.` DROWN, JR., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 98,797, dated aniram/ 11, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS FOR UIWBRELLAS.
The Schedule referred to' in these Lett-ers Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it 'may concern.-
Be it'known that I, HIRAM PLUMB, of Frankford, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed anew andimproved Umbrella-Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description there-v of, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccom lunauthorized persons may be prevented from using the umbrella. A simple key will readily onen the lock and allow its removal, l 4
The lock is made in form of a tube, A, within which a shoulder, a, is formed, and of a U-shaped spring, B, which has outward-projectinghooks b at the ends. The spring-catch B is, when the umbrella is closed,
drawn through the lower spring of the umbrella, as
indicated in lig. 1. Then the ends of the spring-catch are inserted in the narrower lend of the tube A, until they pass the shoulder a, when they spring apart into the Wider portion of the tube.
The hooks now fit over the shoulder a, and the tube can therefore not be withdrawn, the ends. of the spring-catch being also united so that'they cannot be withdrawn from the umbrella-springs.
The outer faces of the hooks b are bevelled, as shown.
The key C is a cylinder, formed on a handle,c.
The cylinder part of the key is just large enough to enter the lwide part of the tube A.
The bore of the key is oval, as shown iu fig. 2.
When the key is inserted, the broad part'of this bore should be in line with.. the two shanks of the spring-catch. l
The key is forced down against the shoulder a, and tsover the hooks b with its wide part. yIt is then turned in the tube A, so as to bring the hooks into the narrow'part, and thereby contracts the hooks sut'- ticiently to let them clear the shoulder a, and to allow the tube to be withdrawn from the spring-catch. The latter can then be withdrawn from the umbrella, to unlock the same.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the hooked spring-catch with the shouldered tube A, and internally eccentric key C, each being constructed, arranged, and operated as and for the `purpose specified. y i
" H. PLUMB.
