To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM l/VEBBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wessington Springs, in the county of Jerauld and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to improvements in washing-machines, and it consist-s in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illust-rate my invention, in which- Y Figure l, represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my device. Fig. 2, is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of one of the pressure boards, detached from the machine. Fig. 4, is a det-ail perspective view of the lower portion of the presser. Fig. 5, is a detail perspective view of the presser. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the binding strips, detached from the presser. Fig. 7 is an end view of the presser and Fig. 8, is a perspective view of the beveled end strip detached from the presser.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the body of the washing machine which is supported on suitable legs a, a, said body having the lids Z), b, hinged thereto and a semicircular portion, c composed of an inner portion CZ and an outer portion c, leaving a space f forming a jacket g, having therein a suitable tilling, 7L, preferably asbestos, whereby the heat from the hot water is retained in the machine.

Within the body of the machine are arranged, at the upper portion thereof and beneath the lids thereof,.presser boards z', c' which are hinged to the outer end y', of a bracket Za that is secured to the inner face of the machine. This bracket comprises a horizontal arm Z, a vertical arm m to the lower end of which said arm Z is hinged, and a rod n pivoted at 0 to the horizontal plate or arm Z, while the upper portion is hooked at p to an eye r on the vertical arm as shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

transverse shaft a that has its end bearings in boxes in the side walls of the machine, a transverse board b at the lower portion thereof having perforations, and metal straps c, which are suspended from the transverse shaft, and held in position by the bolts or rivets CZ. Secured firmly to t-hese metal straps are the series of transverse bars c, the same being spaced from one another, and vertically connect-ing these bars are rods f whereby open work is provided between said rods and transverse bars. At the bottom or lower portion of the presser, is pivoted at each end a swinging shoe m which is designed to tilt and scrape the bottom of the machine and thereby prevent any clothing from getting beneath the presser and being injured or torn. At each end of the presser are vertical strips g the same being secured thereto and having their sides ZL beveled in order to properly force the articles in the body forward.

The transverse shaft is provided with a collar z" having the hub y" provided with the teeth 7c and the handle is provided with corresponding teeth, which form a clutch, whereby the handle can be adjusted to different positions and locked in place by the nut Z on the screw end of the shaft. On both ends of said shaft, it is designed, to have toothed collars and hubs, whereby the machine may be operated at either side thereof.

It will be observed from the above description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings that when the hot water and clothing to be washed are put into the machine, and the handle is grasped by the operator and moved back and forth the presser B forces the articles against the presser boards at the upper portion of the receptacle, which boards being peculiarly suspended from the bracket and having a universal movement accommodates itself to the unevenness of the bulk of articles and assumes a proper position to receive the pressure of the swinging presser aforesaid, and the peculiar construction of said swinging presser with its vertical rods, transverse bars, metallic strips, and end beveled bars forms a presser that is strong and durable, at the same time permitting some elasticity thereto when in operation, and it will be seen that the universally pivoted presser boards can be lowered, by the operator by simply unhooking the rod from the plate and a device as herein shown and described is durable, siniple in construction and at the same time cheap to manufacture.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The Within deseribed Washing machine, composed of a body portion, a hinged bracket at each end thereof, supportedrin horizontal position by a. rod, a universally pivoted presser board attached to each of said brackets, a presser composed of a transverse shaft, provided with a collar and a toothed hub adapted to engage e similar hub on the handle, metal strips depending from said shaft, transverse bars and vertical rods therebetween, a shoe pivoted centrally at the lower end of said presser, and strengthening end pieces having beveled sides, substantially asy described. l
