Patent No. 682,553
Northrop tlch'eel't for loorn piekensticls is shown, in which the cheek is made as en.
endless or c :losed loop of flexible material and of'e length lessthan the stroke of the picker-stickwhich swings Within the loop,
ineens 'being provided to hold one side` of A.the loop andrelease the other side on one strokeofthe stick, and von the other stroke the previously held side othe loop 1s re leased and its other side held. Y This-causes un intermittent longit-'udii-nil or creeping movement of the strup, und at the seine time o grafdunllyincreasing retftrding action isexerted. upon the free side of the loop by u spr1ng-controlled and eecentrlc'detent, the

v'which latter is-pare-llel to. the 'guideestop 3, 'I 'I eter G., lend' by arrangement shown the weight of the detent member 18 at the front of the lay always tends to swing it toward the outer end of the lay, while the tendency of the detent .member at the back of the loom is to swing away from the adjacent end of thelay, but in each case the tendency is to cause the convex face of the detcnt member to more lclosely approach the beveled face a of the opposed guide stop This genera-l arrangement of the parts 1s shown very clearly in Fig. 2, the opposed faces of a detent member and the adjacent' guide-stop normally member 18; the strap always creeping in the' same direction, indicated by arrow 100, Fig. 2.
When the picker-stick strikes the lefthand end of the loop E, Fig. 2, the pull of strap along the front side f-will act, with the .force of gravity, upon the front detent 18I and the latterwill tend to cramp or bind the strap between itself and the adjacent guide-stop 3., while the pull along the oppo site side b of said strap. tends to rock the back detent member away from the adjacent guide-stop, against the action of gra-w ity, releasing the strap at that side so 'that it can move or creep to the left, Fig. 2, as picker-stickcompletes. its outward.
the
stroke.
On the inwardstroke of the picker-stick the operation is just reversed, for then the side Y) of the'loop strap will be bound and held whilethe front side f will be released and will creep toward the right, the pull.. of thestrap away from the thickest' edge of a guide-stop 3 always acting uponjthe corredetent mem the same manner the thinnin of a strap by sponding detent member 18 to release its. 4gripup'on the strap, as will bemanifcst.
The disposition of the weight of each detent member is such that the force of grav- -ity thereon always tends to move such member intoen agement lwiththe strap if the ger is free to move, and w en the pull of the strap is inthe same direction the binding ori cramping action upon the `strap is effected. Straps of different thicknesses are provided for'by adjusting the 'fulcrum spindles 12 in or out on the ears 1, and in Wear. can be compensated or. Thus the picker-stick is checked 'at the end of each stroke, and the intermittent creeping ofthe strap is effected to present new portions vthereof to take up the impact of the pickersticl, and without the employment of springs to control the normal positioning of the detent members.A The farther out t-he loopssupports 6 are set the greater will be the deflection of the strap and the checking' friction thereupon by said supports will be increased, as will be apparent, and by slight adjustment of the spindles 12 the cramping or detaining action of the detent members canbe regulated or adjusted with great exactness, s o that a light o r a4 heavy checking will result, as desired. Each loop-support 6 is located adjacent the releasing side of one of the dete'nt members and its opposed guidestop.
The operative or binding movement of the detent member islimited by engagement of thelug 5 on the guide-stop 3 with a corresponding lug 9.0 on the dctent member .18, see Fig. 3, so that said member cannot by accident be swung beyond its operative position, releasing movement of the detent` member being limited by engagement of the lat ter with the downturncdtip 21. of the toe 7.
The detents 18 and their adjacent guidestops 3 operate alternately upon opposite sides of the check-strap loop E, to hold one side and release the otherside, of the loop when the picker-stick moves in one direction, and vice versa on the reverse movement of the picker-stick, as in the Jatent re fel-red to, but herein the beveled aces 4.- of the guide-stops enable me to form the convex acting f aces of the detents 18 concentric'with the spindles 12, which is an easier construction to Ina-kc than the cam-faced detents shown inthe patent previously mentionefh The. overhanging ears 1 and 2 of each stand D prevents any improper lifting tendency of the check-strap, and the feet 7 provide a suitable and relatively wide support for the lower edge of said strap. Having fully described my invention, what 1I claim as new and desire t'o secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a. loom', a picker-stick, anendless check-strap therefor, devices to frictionally grasp alternately opposite sides of the strapf A loop, one of said devices holding the loop.. from longitudinal movementwhen the other device releases itto permit such movement,
and vice versa, and anadjustable loopsl port and deflector adjacent each of stud e- 'vice`s, adjustment of such support varying4 the path Aof the y.strap-loop Vas it approaches s the adjacent engaging device.
y2. In a loom,"a picker-stick, an endless check-strap therefor, devices to frictionally rasp alternately opposite sides' of the strap- ..1
oop, one of sind devices-holdingthe loop from'longitudinal movement when the otherv device releases it to permit such movement,
and vice versa, a depending looplsupportstrap rests, and means to nmintain said supill port adj usted toward or away from the path of the picker-stick, to thereby decrease or increase the bend in the side of the checkstrap :1s it approaches the adjacent engaging device.
3. In :l loom, a picliestick, e continuous and flexible creeping check-Strap therefor and' within which it oecillates, devices to frictionally engage alternately opposite sides of the strap-loop, each device com`- prising a bevel-faced guide-stop and an op posed detent meniber having a convex face, mounted to swing toward and from 4the 'guide-stop, longitudinal pull on either end of the loop causing one of the detent mem- .bers to swing toward the opposed guidestop, to bind the strep-loop against the beveled fece of the stop while the other `1nember swings away from its guide-step,
releasing the loop, and 'oppositely inclined fulcro upon which said detent members swing, said filiere being so inclined that' each det-ent member is normally moved by gravity toward .operative posltlen.
