LUNDGB-EN, O WORCESTER; MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGIQOR T0 CROME'TON a KNOWLES kLOOM W'ORKS, GIE' MASSACHUSETTS i VGRCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, .A COREORATION OF snorricnonncx Application lefl January 15, 1929. Serial No. 332,705.
This linvention relates to shuttle checks for looms and it is the-general object of the invention to provide a simple check wherein the checking action isk caused by the shuttle itself. i
` In weft replenishing looms it is important to have the shuttles properly placed with respect to the magazines and weft detectors so thatthese mechanisms can always cooperate properly with the bobbin. Itis an important object of my present invention to provide a shuttle check `which is movable with` respect to a fixed pivot and divided into two arms,l one the shuttle engaging arm and the other the binder or pressure exerting arm, these arms being variable as to length to effecta range of pressureswhich may be necessary when the speed ofy the loom is increased or decreased.
It is a further object of my present invention to provide a shuttle check havingV 'an arm to engage` the` rounded portion 0f the shuttle andtovprovide said check with a mounting so that; said arm maybe given a greater or lesser movementv depending upon the amount of -the rounded portion ofthe shuttle which it engages.
With these and other objects in Vview which will appear as the description pro- 'ceeds7 my 'invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and'set forth inthe claims.
' In the accompanying drawings, wherein a convenient embodiment ofmy invention is Vset forth, l
Fig. 1 is a top plan View of a lay end havf ing my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 isa front elevation of a portion of a structure shown in Fig. 1 taken in the direction of arrow 2, of the latter ligure,` and Fig. 3 is an'enlarged vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 1; Y p.
Referring to Figlpl have indicated the lay 10 having abox back 11 and abinder 12 supported by a stud lupstanding from boxV at one end. Thestructure thus far described is of the usualV form.
ncarrying my invention intoeifect I' provide the boxvplate 14 with `a forwardly extending horn 2O into which is threaded as at`21 the lower end of a stud 22. The latter extends through a carrier 23, upward mo,- tion of which is restrained by head 2st `of the stud. -The carrier is conned between the head and the horn 20 but is free to rotate about lthe stud., f Y
The shuttle check includes in its construction a single strip of vresilient metal such as tempered steel indicated generally at 30 having the right vhand end thereof as viewed in Fig. 1 curved ,as Yat 31 and provided with ,leather facing 32. The facing is designed to. engage the rounded edge C of the shuttle S; .The shuttle check is provided with a rear substantially straight limb 33 the left hand end of which asr viewed in Fig. 1 is bent'towardthe binder to engage the latter at a rounded portion or nose` 34. From the nose the strip of material is curved for-4 The carrier 23 is provided with a recess 401 which receives the limb 33 while the `forward lportion of said carrier is provided-with a second recess 41 in which lies'lthe forward limb;v i i As shownin Fig. 2 the forward portion of the check is provided with'a s101542 through which extends va pair of screws. 13. V'lhese screws extend into vthe Vcarrier and' clamp lthe forward portion of the checktightly to the carrier. The rear limb 33 is free to. move in the slot 40, not being clamped directly vto `the carrier but being held in close relation with the latter partly by the bolt `37. g
The stud 22 is normally in fixed Vposition with respect to the box plate and therefore the laylof the loomis provided with a single Y Cil Lif)
With respect to the shuttle when the latter is properly boxed. As the shuttle enters the box the curved portion C will engage the leather facing 32 and rock the check in a clock-Wise direction as viewed-in Fig. l around the stud 22, thus pressing the rounded nose 3st against the binder 12. The effect of this action is to increase the pressure of the binder against the shuttle and thereby check movement of the latter in the box to avoid rebounding.
It it is desired to vary the checking effect on the shuttle the screws 43 may be loosened and the cheek moved either to the right-or to the left, as desired, with respect to the carrier 23, the screivs el?) being tightened When the check is in proper position. By varying the position of the nut-s 39 With respect to the screiv 37 it will be possible to change the relation betwen the substantially parallel limbs 33 and 35 to effect a corresponding change between the shuttle and binder engaging arms. In this Way I am able to secure Va. variety of adjustments and also to vary the time of application of the maximum torce exerted by the check when compared With the travel of theshuttle into the box toward the picker. y
lVhen the shuttle cheek is moved to the left of the position shown in Fig. l the leather facing 32 will be engaged at an earlier time in the flight of the shuttle so that the nose 3ft Will be moved against the binder earlier in the pick. rIhis movement of the check will of courseapply the pressure exert-ed by the nose 34 at a point more distant from the pivot ot the binder so as to increase the leverage of the latter. If in the new position assumed the' leverage 'should be found correct but the time ot action too late the screw 37 may be changed so as to move the leather rfaced end of the check rearwardly,` this adjustment being permissible due to the tact that the material of which the binder is formed is resilient and that the sereiv 37 acts to torce the Aliinb 33 vaway from limb 35.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a shuttle cheek formed essentially of a. single strip of resilient material which is held to a Carrier movable around an axis preferably fixed though not necessarily so with respect to the box. It Will further be seen that the cheek may be moved either to the right or to the left With regard to the carrier by manipulation of the screws 43. It will also be seen that the relation ot the shuttle engaging arm with respect to the binder engaging nose may be varied by means of the serev 37. o
