To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLnsP; MosHER, citizen of the United States, and resident of: the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-lVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to means for supporting and guiding the carriage and for maintaining the bearing rollers therefor properly spaced with reference to one laanother and to the tracks on which they ear.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the'accompanaying drawings wherein like reference characters indicate; corresponding parts in the various views,Figure 1 is arear elevation showing the upper part of the typewriting machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view, the section corresponding to Fig. 2, but showing the parts on a larger scale and with some of the parts represented in Fig. 2 omitted. Fig. 4 is a detail ,perspective view. of one of the separators. I
'I have shown my invention embodied in the present instance in a front-strike typewriting machine in which the carriage 1s 'fixed against swlnging movement and is wholly supported in the rear of the plat-en, and in which there is no obstruction to the usual upwardly swinging type bars striking the front face of the platen and an unobstructed view of the printing line is atforded. Itshould be understood, however, that my invention may be embodied in other styles of typewriting machine's.
The top plate 1 of the machine has brackets 2 fixed thereto by screws 3. An upper fixed guide rail 4 is secured by screws 5 to the brackets 2. A corresponding lower fixed guide rail 6 is secured to lugs 7 on the brackets 2; screws 8 being employed to secure the rail 6 in place. These fixed guide rails are alike so that a description of one applies to the other. The guide rail 4 has inclined tracks 9 formed thereon throughout its entire length for cooperation with cylindrical anti-friction bearing rollers 10. The tracks 9 are inclined in opposite directions and the cylindrical bearing rollers have their axes arranged at corresponding inclinations. The upper tracks 9 are inclined downwardly and outwardly from each other, whereas the lower tracks 9 are inclined upwardly and outwardly away from each other. The tracks 9 and 9 are formed as flat.- bottomed grooves extending throughout the length of" the fixed rails it and 6 respectively. There are preferably four bearing rollers 10 for the uppertracks 9 and four bearing rollers 10 for the lower tracks 9 as will be seen by an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2.
The carriage comprises a rear guide bar 11 which constitutes the sole support for the carriage through the cooperation of said bar with the bearing rollers 10 and 10 Forwardly extending end bars 12 project from the rear guide bar 11 and have hearings in which a platen shaft 13 is received, said platen supporting the usual cylindrical platen 14. The guide bar 11 has oppositely inclined tracks 15 formed at the top thereof, said tracks being inclined and arranged parallel with the tracks 9 on the fixed guide rail 4. The bottom of the bar 11 has tracks 16 formed thereon which correspond to and are parallel with'the inclined tracks 9 on the fixed rail 6. The carriage is thus mounted for movement on the bearing rollers 10 and 10 to travel from side to side of the machine over the top plate and is fixed against swinging movement and .guided firmly by the bearing rollers and the cooperating tracks. From the foregoing description it will he seen that l have provided simple and el'li cit-n; means for mounting the c: riago and for controlling the positions of the bearing rollers therefor at every point in the travel of the carriage.

pinions, one meshing with each of said racks; two gears, each one can to turn with a pinion; and two fixed racks, each cooperative with one of said gears.

In a typewriting machine, the combina tion of a carriage having a carriage supporting bar; tracks on the upper and lower sides'of said supporting bar; anti-friction rollers which cooperate with .said tracks; a separator'for the rollers at the upper side of the bar; a separate separator for the rollers at the lower side 'ofthe bar; two racks one formed on each of said separators; two shafts carried by the carriage; two pinions, one carried by each of said shafts and each meshing with a rack on a separator; two gears, each connected to turn with a pinion; and two fixed racks, each meshing with a gear.
