TYPE WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,3 54, dated May 6, 1902. Application filed January 30, 1901. Serial No. 45,271. (No model-J To ctZZ whont it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, FRANZ X. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Type-VVriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to type-writing machines, and more particularly'to means for supporting the carriage in such machines.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and efficient mechanism for supporting the carriage in a type-writing machine and so as to reduce the friction on the supporting parts to a minimum.
In the ;;drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view, with parts broken away, of sufficient number of parts of one form of type-writing machine to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.1
A portion which corresponds to the top plate or framing of the machine is designated at 1. Projecting from the framingl are supporting-lugs 2. Secured to these lugs is a trackway or rod 3, the trackway or rod being secured to the supporting-lugs in such a manner as to provide abutments 4 for purposes which will hereinafter appear. In the present instance the rod or trackway3 is circular in cross-section and has connected thereto or formed therein a rack 5.
The carriage 6 is provided with a platen 7 and has secured thereto a rod or trackway 8, which is similar to the trackway 3 in that it is circular in cross-section and is provided with a rack 9. This upper trackway 8, which is secured to the carriage, as indicated at 10,
is pivoted to turn on its longitudinal axis on links or supports 11, (see Fig. 2,) which travel with the carriage. The pivot for the rod 8 is indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, wherein a screw 12 is provided, which passes through the support 11 and is secured to the rod 8, the plane portion 13 of said screw constituting a hearing, which is seated in an opening contained in the support 11. I have described and shown in dotted lines this pivotal connection of the rod 8 on but one end of the carriage; but it will be understood that the The platen-carriage 6 p of the platen in order to bring about upper andlower case printing. The supports 11 extend downwardly and have secured thereto a rod 17. Cooperating with this rod 17 are guideways 18 and 19, which permit the rod 17 to move in a longitudinal direction, but which prevent any lateral movement of said rod. Secured to any suitable portion of the carriage is one member of the carriage feed mechanism, whereas the other cooperating member or members of such feed mechanism are carried by the framing of the machine. In the present instance I have illustrated a rack 20, which is secured to the supports 11 and which cooperates with feed-dogs 21 22 in order to feed the carriage in a step-by-step move ment. interposed between the trackways 3 and Sare bearing-rollers 23. The peripheries of these rollers conform to the general curve or contour of the trackways in cross-section, so that the rollers form flanges 24, which prevent the rollers from being displaced laterally from the trackways. Intermediate of the flanges on each roller is a circular rack 25, the teeth of which mesh in the teeth of the racks 5 and 9 ofthe trackways 3 and 8, respectively, as clearly represented in Fig. l of the drawings. The bearing-rollers 23 are detached or disconnected, but nevertheless constantly maintain a fixed relation to one another and to the trackways with which they cooperate by reason of the engagement of the circular racks 25 on the rollers with the racks 5 and 9. From the foregoing it will be understood that a movement of thetcarriage a given distance will effect a traverse of the track 8 only half of the distance on the bearing-rollers 23,Whereasthe other half of the distance traveled by the carriage will be effected by a rolling movement of the bearing-rollers 23 on the trackway 3. By this means it will be observed that an easy rolling action of the carriage upon the machine is provided and that the frictional contact between the bearing parts is reduced to a minimum and that the Wear is evenly distributed over a number of parts.
By having the faces of the trackways which cooperate with the bearing rollers curved transversely in the manner shown the platen carriage may be freely moved in a direction transverse to the length of the platen, such movement taking place around the longitudinal axis of the rod or trackway 8.
By providing the supports 11, connected to the rod 17, which is guided by the fixed guides 18 and 19, the trackway 8 is maintained prop-. erly positioned on the roller-bearings at all times and is prevented from being displaced laterally, the parts allowing, however, of a free movement of the trackway Sin the direction of its length with the carriage, as well as the slight turning movement on its longitudinal axis, to provide for upper and lower case printing. The abutments 4 on the supports 2 constitute stops to limit the movement of the disconnected roller-bearings 23 and to prevent them from running oft the lower trackway. When either of the bearing-rollers 23 contacts with an abutment 4, the roller will be prevented from further movement, and the carriage will be arrested.
It will be understood that by this construction a wide carriage can be employed without proportionately increasing the width of the framing of the machine.
While I have shown and described with considerable detail one form or embodiment of 'my invention, I would have it understood that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s--* 1. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage, a trackway carried by said carriage, a trackway carried by the f raming of the machine, disconnected intermediate bearing-rollers between said trackways, and means on which the rollers are adapted to roll for maintaining the rollers fixed one with relation to another throughout the movement of the carriage.
2. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage, a trackway' carried by said carriage, a trackway carried by the framing of the machine, disconnected intermediate bearing-rollers between said trackways, and rack and pinion for maintaining the rollers in fixed relation to the trackway on the framing of the machine throughout the movement of the carriage.
3. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage, a trackway carried by said carriage, a trackway carried by the framing of the machine, disconnected intermediate bearing-rollers between said trackways, and rack and pinion for maintaining the rollers in fixed relation to the trackways throughout the movement of the carriage.
4. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage, a trackway carried by said carriage, a trackway carried by the framing of the machine, disconnected intermediate bearing-rollers between said trackways, and rack and pinion for maintaining the rollers fixed one. with relation to another and in fixed relation to the trackways throughout the movement of the carriage.
5. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage, a trackway carried by said carriage, a rack carried by said trackway, a trackway carried by the framing of the machine, a rack carried by said second-named trackway, disconnected intermediate bearing-rollers between said trackways,and a gear connected to each of said rollers,each of which gears is adapted to engage the racks on the trackways.
6. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage and geared roller-bearings upon which said carriage is supported.
7. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage and disconnected unmounted geared roller-bearings upon which said carriage is supported.
8. In a type-writing machine, the combi nation of a carriage, geared roller-bearings upon which said carriage is supported, and racks cooperating with said roller-bearings and carried by the carriage and the framing of the machine.
9. Ina type-Writing machine, the combination of a platen, a platen-carriage, means for moving the platenin a direction transverse to the length thereof for upper and lower case printing, a traekway carried by the carriage, a trackway carried by the framing of the machine, disconnected intermediate bearingrollers between said trackways, and means on which the rollers are adapted to roll for maintaining the rollers fixed one with relation to another throughout the movement of the carriage.
10. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a platen-carriage, means for moving the platen in a direction transverse to the length thereof, a pivoted trackway carried by the carriage, a trackway carried by the framing of the machine, disconnected intermediate bearing-rollers between said trackways, and means for maintaining the rollers fixed one with relation to another.
11. In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a platen, a platen-carriage, means for moving the platen in a direction transverse to the length thereof, a pivoted trackway carried by the carriage, a trackway carried by the framing of the machine, disconnected intermediate bearing-rollers between said trackways, and means for maintaining the rollers fixed one with relation to another and in fixed relation to the trackways.
12. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage, a trackway carried by the carriage, a trackway carried by the framing of the machine, disconnected intermediate bearing-rollers between said trackways, means for maintaining the rollers fixed one with relation to another, a carriage feed member carried by the carriage, and a cooperating carriage feed member carried by the framing of the machine.
13. In a type-writing machine, the combi nation of a carriage, a trackway carried by said carriage, a rack carried by the trackway, a second trackway carried by the framing of the machine, a rack carried by said second named trackway, intermediate flanged bearing-rollers between said trackways, and circular racks carried by each of the bearingrollers intermediate of the flanges thereof, which circular racks mesh in the racks carried by the trackways.
14. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage, a trackway pivoted to said carriage, a rack carried by the trackway, means for maintaining said trackway against lateral displacement but permitting a free longitudinal movement thereof with the carriage, a second trackway carried by the framing of the machine, a rack carried by said second-named trackway, intermediate flanged bearing-rollers between said trackways, and circular racks carried by each of the bearing-rollers intermediate of the flanges thereof,which circular racks mesh in the racks carried by the trackways.
15. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a carriage, a trackway connected to said carriage, which trackway is curved in cross-section, a rack on the trackway, a second trackway on the framing of the machine, a rack on said second-named trackway, disconnected bearingrollers which cooperate with the trackways and with the racks thereon, and pivotal connections for maintaining the carriage-trackway in operative position, whereby said carriage-trackway can turn with the carriage as well as move longitudinally therewith.
