To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VnL'rnR A. CoLLms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, lVestchester county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to improvements in means for fastening a hat and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, ethcient and reliable device which may be readily attached to a hat without dcfacing or injuring the same in any manner.

Further, said invention has for its object to provide means adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of a hat, which means are adapted to receive and retain a hat whereby the hat is held in position upon the head of the wearer.

To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends-my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a central horizontal section of a hat with one form of retaining device constructed according to and embodying my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail face view of one of the retaining devices arranged -upon the side of the hat; Fig. 3 is a face view of the base or support of one of said retaining devices with the movable member thereof removed in order to show the arrangement of the recesses in said support; Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail vertical sect-ion showing a portion of a hat with the retaining means arranged upon one side thereof, and the point end of a hat pin engaged and held thereby, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2.

In said drawings designates a hat of ordinary construction which is provided upon the opposite sides of its crown adjacent to the rim portion thereof with openings 11, 11 and upon the outer surface of said crown and covering the openings 11 11 therein are arranged securing devices 12 12 which comprise a plate 13 made of metal or other suitable material. The plate 13 may be of any suitable or convenient outline or shape and ornamented as desired,

and preferably made of a material capable of being conformed to the outline of the hat upon which the same is tobe secured. 14 141- denote apertures provided adjacent to" the four corners of said plate to permit of said plate being sewed in position upon a hat. 15 denotes a horizontal slot or aperture arranged near the center of said plate 13 having its rear side beveled to form an enlarged entrance portion, and adjacent to the ends of said slot 15 are provided short vertical. slots 16, 1h. 1? denotes a movable locking member consisting of a metallic plate having its opposite ends split and the lower portion 18 of said split end bent rearwardly and disposed within the vertical recesses or slots 16 16 in said plate 13 and the upper portions 19 19 of said split end are adapted to rest upon the outer surface of said plate. In the lower edge of said locking plate 17 are provided. notches or recesses 20 20, and 21 denotes a finger piece provided upon the upper edge of the plate 17 midway between its ends.

22 denotes a hat pin provided at one end with an ornamental head 23 and at its point end with a series of notches 24:, 2 1. 2:), 25 denote notches arranged at the opposite end of said pin adjacent to the ornamental head thereon.

The operation of the device is as follows: In order to secure a hat in position upon the head of the wearer it merely becomes necessary to raise the movable locking plates 17 17 to assume the position indicated in dotted lines at Fig. 2 and insert the pin first through the slot 15 arranged in the plate upon one side of the hat, and thence pass the point end of said pin through the slot 15 in the plate 13 arranged upon the opposite side of the hat. I'Icreupon the locking plates 17 17 are forced downwardly to cause one of the notches 20 in the lower edge of each of said plates to engage one of the notches 24. 25 nearest thereto arranged in the opposite ends of the pin and thus hold the pin against lateral movement within the hat and retain the hat properly in position upon the head of the wearer.

It will be noted that by means of my improved construction it does not become necessary to provide a plurality of apertures in the opposite sides of the hat below the plates 13 13 since the elongated opening 15 which has its rear surface slightly beveled to form an enlarged entrance portion for the pin readily serves to guide the pin into place in order to be engaged by the movable locking plate arranged upon the outer surface of the plate or support. Further, it will be noted that since the pin 22 is provided. adjacent to each of its ends with a plurality of annular notches Qel, 25, the pin may be readily adapted to operate in connection with the securing devices applied to hats of different sizes. Further it will be noted that with my improved form of retaining device it does not become necessary to employ two of the retaining devices since the pin may be duly engaged and held in position within the hat by means of a single device adapted to engage the point end of the pin only.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patsurface of said plate and movably supported "'1 within said vertical openings and adapted to engage and hold a pin, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a hat, of a retaining device comprising a plate secured thereto having a longitudinal opening there 111, vertical openings arranged adjacent to the opposite ends of said longitudinal opening, a locking plate arranged upon the outer surface of said plate, rearwardly extending tongues on said plate extending through said vertical recesses, said plate being provided at its lower edge with a plurality of recesses adapted to engage and hold apin, substantially as specified.

3. The combination with a hat, of a re taining device comprising a plate secured thereto having a longitudinal opening therein provided with an enlarged entrance portion, vertical openings arranged adjacent to the opposite ends of said longitudinal opening. a locking plate arranged upon the outer surface of said plate having its opposite ends split to form a plurality of tongues, a part 0t said tongues at each end of said plate being bent rearwardly and disposed in said vertical openings, a finger portion provided at the upper edge of said plate and recesses provided along the lower edge of said plate adapted to engage and hold a pin, substantially as specified.
