To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SUSIE RINER, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Stuart, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Sewing Machine Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide improved means for guiding cloth in relation to a sewing machine during the operation of stitching plaits in said cloth, the purpose being to gage the depth of the plait and cause the same to be stitched on a line parallel with the margin thereof.

My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan illustrating my invention mounted as required for practical use in relation to a portion of plaited cloth during the operation of stitching the plait thereof. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of my improved attachment. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of one portion of my improved attachment.

In the construction of the. device as shown the numeral 10 designates a bearing-yoke adapted to be mounted on the presser stem of a sewing machine. The bearing-yoke 10 may be adjusted longitudinally of the presser stem 11 and may be secured thereto by a set screw 12 of any desired height. L-shaped notches 18, 1 4 are formed in and open upwardly from arms of the bearingyoke 10. A gage-bar 15 is mounted horizontally in the bottoms of the notches 18, 14 and extends transversely of and in contact with the presser stem 11. The set screw 12, acting through the bearing-yoke 10, serves to draw the gage-bar 15 into contact with the presser stem. Arms 16, 17 are fixed to and extend downward and forward from end portions of the gage-bar 15. The arms 16, 17 preferably extend at right angles to the gage-bar 15 and are bent at their centers and extend forwardly at oblique angles to their vertical portions and are bent again near their extremities and extended upwardly slightly from the horizontal. The forwardly extending portions of the arms 16, 17 preferably are flattened and have their greater transverse dimensions in vertical planes. The gage-bar 15 is graduated on its front surface each way from the center and Specification of Letters Patent.

the graduate marks thereof may be provided with indices as desired, such as zero at the center, and one to ten inclusive each way from the center.

In practical use this attachment is mounted on the presser stem of a sewing machine and adjusted at the desired height thereon so that a portion or piece 18 of cloth to be plaited may pass beneath the attachment and in sliding contact with the lower margins of the arms 16, 17 thereof. A plait 19 is laid in the cloth and is stitched on the dotted line 20, the margin 21 of the plait traveling in sliding engagement with the inner surface of the arm 17. Thus the arm 17 serves to guide and direct the cloth and plait therein to the end that the row of stitching on the dotted line 20 will be parallel with the margin 21 of the plait. The gage bar 15 may be adjusted through the notches 13, 14 of the bearing-yoke to the end of gaging, fixing and determining the width of the plait or the space between the line of stitching 20 and the margin 21 of the plait. Then a plait can be laid to the left of the line 20, the gage be adjusted to the desired position to equalize the latter plait to the former one, and the latter plait be stitched on a line parallel with the line 20. In either instance the stitching of the plait is begun at the upper end of the piece 18 of cloth and extended toward or to the bot-tom thereof with the result that the stitching of the plaits on either side of the center is uniform and true and does not tend to draw and twist the cloth in either direction. Other plaits may be laid and stitched successively to any desired number on either side of the center of the piece of cloth.

I claim as my invention In a sewing machine attachment, the combination of a bearing yoke adapted to be mounted adjustably on a presser stem of a sewing machine, said bearing yoke formed with upwardly opening, transversely alining, L-shaped notches intersecting the bore of 'the bearing yoke containing said presser stem, and a plaiting gage mounted in said L-shaped notches and adapted to be clamped against said presser stem, said plaiting gage formed of a single length of wire having a straight central portion circular in cross-section and graduated each way from its center and provided with indices in respect of the graduations, said indices progressing from 0 at the center to 10 at the ends of said central portion, said wire bent downwardly at each end of the straight central portion, said wire bent on obtuse angles forwardly at a distance below the straight central portion to form forwardly extending arms, said forwardly extending arms bent upwardly on obtuse angles intermediate of their ends, said arms being flattened and having their greater transverse dimensions vertical, said arms also being parallel With each other and 10 spaced apart a distance equal to the length of the straight central portion.
