SEWING-MAGHINE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1910.
Application filed August 25, 1909. Serial No. 514,580.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUISA Born, citizen of the United States, residing at Stuart, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Sewing-dachine Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a work-guide attachment for sewing machines of any type, and has for its principal object to provide a device of the character described which is especially advantageous in gaging the seams or tucks of the goods being sewed, irrespective of whether the work is being done on one side of the presser-foot or the other.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a device which is simple in construction, easy of adjustment, and cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of'parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a detail perspective view showing the invention applied to the presser-bar of a sewing machine. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the clam and showing the guide secured therein, an Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guide.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, a designates a portion of a sewing-machine head of any approved type in which are operatively mounted a needle-bar 5, and a presser-bar 6, having a thereon. All of the above described elements are of a well known construction and form no part of my invention, but merely show one of the many types of machines to which my invention may be readily applied.
A collar 8, which is preferably rectangular, and which can be made of any preferred material, is provided with an opening 9, arranged near one edge thereof. The presserbar 6 is adapted to be positioned within this presser-foot 7 detachably secured.
1 opening, and the said collar is retained at any desired elevation on the said bar by a set-screw 10, or any other suitable means. The larger portion of the collar is arranged on the opposite side of the presser-bar from the needle-bar, and is provided with a downwardly extending transverse slot 11.
The invention further embodies a workguide formed from a single piece of spring wire or the like. The guide comprises a central portion 12 constituting a rockshaft which is preferably rounded, and which is adapted to be seated within the transverse slot 11 of the collar 8, and retained therein by a set-screw 13 or its equivalent. The free ends of the guide are oppositely disposed to form arms 1l14l, z. 6., the arms are oppositely bent at right angles to the central portion 12. The ends 15-15 of the arms are respectively flattened and oppositely depressed, and the extreme ends 16-16 thereof are curved upwardly for permitting a fabric to be readily inserted thereunder.
From the foregoing, it will be readily apparent that whenever it is desirous of forming seams, tucks, or the like in a piece of goods, the guide is adjusted longitudinally to the required width. After the first tuck has been formed, the flat end 15 of one of the arms 14 is positioned over the said tuck, and thus a tuck parallel to the first tuck can be easily made. Should the goods be worked in use can be readily swung upward, the movement thereby causing the other arm to be moved downward into position.
WVhat I claim is 1. An attachment for sewing-machines comprising a collar adapted to be adj ustably secured on the presser-bar above the presserfoot, and a reversible work-guide formed from a single piece of metal having its ends oppositely bent at right angles, the ends of the bent portions forming work guiding arms while the intermediate portion of the guide is rotatably and adjustably mounted in the said collar.
2. An attachment for sewing-machines comprising a collar adapted to be adjustably secured on the pre'sser-bar above the presserfoot and provided with a transverse slot, and areversible work-guide formed from a single piece of metal having its central portion detachable and adjustably secured from the other side, the arm which has been Within the slot of the collar, the ends of the as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signaguide constituting arms which are bent 0pture in the presence of two Witnesses. positely and at ri 'ht an des t0 the said central portion, the nds of the arms being re- LOUISA B01 5 spectively flattened and oppositely depressed Vvitnesses:
to form Work-guides. CHARLES R. RABER,
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing Rnnon I. BOYD.
