BOTTLE-FILLING ATTACHMENT FOR BIB-FAUCETS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA W. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cohoes, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Filling Attachments for Bib-Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a. part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in side elevation of a bib-faucet showing my improved filling attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the attachment, whereby the bottle is caused to open the faucet-valve. Fig. 3 is a central, vertical, longitudinal section taken through the clip, whereby the attachment is connected with the head of the faucet-handle.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby the valve of an ordinary bib-faucet can be automatically opened by the presentation to the faucet of a bottle to be filled therefrom, without interfering with the use of the faucet in the ordinary manner.
Referring to the drawings, 1, is a bib faucet of a known type having a screwthreaded nozzle, 2, and a valve-operating handle, 3, adapted to open the valve (not shown) when the handle is either raised or depressed.
For the purpose of adapting the faucet for filling bottles a nipple, 4, is screwed upon the screw-threaded end, 2, of the faucet-nozzle, which nipple is adapted to enter the mouth of a bottle presented to the faucet for filling. Difierent sized nipples can be employed for filling bottles of difler' ent sizes.
As a novel means for operating the faucetvalve automatically when a bottle is presented to the faucet to be filled therefrom, I have shown a yielding rod, 5, detachably secured at its upper end to the head, 6, of the faucet-handle, and having its lower end off set and formed into a loop, 7, adapted to encircle the nipple 4. ' yielding by forming it into a coil, 8, at a point intermediately of its ends. The rod, can be made of a single piece of wire, as shown, or in any other known manner. The loop, 7, normally occupies a position near the lower end of the nipple, 4, in which position it is adapted to be engaged by the neck of the bottle applied to the nipple, and forced upward from the position shown by solid lines to that indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, which upward movement is transmitted through the rod, 5, to the faucethandle, 3, tending to raise the same to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, thereby opening the faucet-valve. lVhen the bottle is filled it is withdrawn from the nipple, 4, permitting the loop, 7, rod, 5, and valve-handle to resume the position shown by solid lines in Fig. 1, in which position the faucet-valve is closed. By reason of the yielding nature of the rod, 5, due to the coils, 8, therein, the loop, 7, is free to adjust itself and bear flatly upon the mouth-end of the bottle and distribute the pressure with substantial uniformity thereto throughout the operation of opening the valve and hold ing the same open; and also limits the force opposed to the upward thrust of the bottle, preventing breakage thereof. The loop, 7, being self-adjustable in position by reason of the yielding nature of the rod, 5, does not tend to bind upon the nipple, 4, in its movements to open, and permit the closing of the faucet.
As a preferred means for connecting the upper end of the rod, 5, with the faucethandle, I have provided a clip-plate, 9, adapted to rest upon the head, 6, of the faucet-handle, having one end, 10, bifurcated and inturned to extend beneath the head, 6, and embrace the shank of the faucethandle, the other end of said plate being bifurcated and comprising ears, 11, adapted to support a pintle, 12, around which the upper end of the rod, 5, is coiled, as at 13, the extreme end of said rod being bent to form a hook, 14, adapted to bear upwardly upon the underside of the head, 6, to lock the clip-plate upon said head and impart the thrust of the rod, 5, thereto. So long as the loop, 7, remains on the nipple, 4, the rod, 5, through its hooked end, 14, will retain the clip-plate upon the head, 6, of the faucethandle.

A bottle-filling attachment for faucets comprising a clip-plate having one end bifurcated and inturned to receive the head of a faucet-handle and embrace the shank of said handle, a pintle supported by the other end of said clip-plate, and a rod having at one end a bottle-engaging member, and having its other end coiled around said pintle and terminating in a hook adapted to engage the underside of said head.
4. A bottle-filling attachment for faucets comprising a clip-plate having one end bifurcated and int-urned to receive the head of a faucet-handle and embrace the shank of said handle, a pintle supported by the other end of said clip-plate, and a rod having a coil formed intermediately of its ends, and having at one end a bottle-engaging member, and having its other end coiled around said pintle and terminating in a hook adapted to engage the underside of said head.
