AUTOGRAPHIC REGISTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1911.
Application filed September 11, 1909. Serial No. 517,256.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT KRAUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in autographic registers.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide means for locking the various swinging parts opening into the interior of the register from a single point.
Another object of my invention is to provide an autographic register having a series of swinging end plates or doors, with means for locking all in closed position from a single point of control with means for mut1 lating a record strip upon a released movement of the lock to indicate each instant of opening of the swinging plates.
The features of my invention are more fully set forth in the description of the aocompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a register containing myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same with the end swinging plates shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed inside elevation of the upper portion of the forward swinging plate. Fig. 4c is a detailed view of a portion of the rear swinging plate. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on line 00, m, Fig. 2.
In registers of this class, and especially of the type in which a record Strip is contained within the register wound into a roll upon each operation of the register, it is desirable to provide means for locking the frame and its swinging plates, or doors, to
prevent an unauthorized person to gain access to the interior of the register. In the type of register illustrated, several hinged members are empoloyed, and it is desirable to control the locking means from a single point, to look all. of them simultaneously, and further, to control the same to prevent an independent opening of any of them.
1 represents the base of the register, and 2 the side frames, supporting the rolls of paper 4, 5, and 6, which are fed over the swinging writing table 7, between-the feeding rolls 8 and 9. Two of said strips of paper being fed out of the machine, while a third is wound upon the receiving roll 10, and in its course, passes over a circumferentially grooved roller 11.
12 represents a swinging marginal frame pivoted in the usual manner to one side of the frame, provided with the usual opening 13, over the writing table 7.
The construction of register, as described, being common in the art, does not form a feature of this invention.
14 represents the forward end plate or door for closing the end of the register, pivotally supported upon a rod 15, fixed to the side frame 2. This swinging end plate is preferably provided with the locking devices for locking said door or plate in its closed position and manipulated by a key upon the outside of the register frame.
16 represents a rod journaled in hearings or cars 17, projected from the inner face of the plate 14. V
18, 19, represent catch arms fixed to the rod 16, adapted to engage with a hook or catch member 20, formed in each of the sideframes 2.
21 represents a spring engaged with the swinging plate 14 and the rod 16, for maintaining the catches 18, 19, in one position normally under tension, so as to automatically engage with the catches 20, of the side frame 2, when the swinging plate 14, is brought to its closed iosition.
22 represents a pair of arms fixed to the rod 16, their free ends provided with a lug projection 23, adapted to engage a respective groove formed in the roller 11, to perforate the paper upon each released movement of the rod 16, to disengage the latch arms 18, 19, from the side frames. The purpose of such perforation is to indicate upon the record strip each time the swinging plate 14 is moved to open position.
One end of the rod 16 is projected through a sleeve boss 24, formed integral preferably with the swinging plate 14:, so as to receive a key 25, inserted therein from the exterior of the register frame to engage a pin 26, fixed to the rod 16, whereby the rod 16 can be oscillated by the key to release the locking mechanism and perforate the paper in each instance. It is obvious that various ways may be employed for actuatingthe rod 16,- by a key from the exterior.-.o fh=the register, from that shown, and
therefore,I do not wish to limit myself to the use of such construction, as any protective means may be employed, lnserted from the exterior of the machineto engage or control the released movement of the-latch arms from their engagement with the sideframes. 27 represents a plate pivoted upon the rod 28, fixed to the side frames 2, for
'closing the rear end of the register, said plate at its upper end is provided with a .15
catckmember: 2.9, adapted to engage into a nQtChIBO, formed in a depending flange 31, of tithe zmargin frame 12. 32 represents a spring, see Fig. 4, .one .end engagedwiththe swinging plate 27,.and its opposite end with filt amd 28, fOrimaintaining-said plate noriundentension .in. closed position, forming a spring latch lock to the margin frame 12, 'when the sameis closed. To lock-said swinging plates .14: and Y27, .so that the release'ofone must be accomplished prior to that of -theother, the following instrumentalitiesa ie .proVidedz-33 represents .a rod provided with an eye at one end, loosely connected to the arm 34, projected from the swinging .plate 1.4, see Figs. 2 and 5, whereby inthe a-Icofm Vement of said arm .34., through the movement of the .plate *14, will actuate the rod133. The opposite end of the .rod 33 is provided with a fitting 35,
ha ng 0b1QIigsl0t-36, through which a:
screwor studlpin 37, fixed to the plate 27, passes, forming an anchorage for therod33,
,ith -,the. swinging plate 27. Asshown in Fig. '2, the position of the parts will not permit the plate 27, to be swung in either dir tion, s on nd engaging the end of theslot of the fitting .36, arresting=the movement adirection for. release of the catch 29., with .the margin frame 112.. Releasing thfifiwinging plate 14 by moving the latch arms 18, 19, downward to disengage the same from the side frames, will permit the pla e to be swung d wn rd, mo ing nod 33 :ina direction toward the end plate 21, the eby cau ng uppe catche of the swinging pl 7, to swing inw r diseag ging the. ame f o the margin rem tting s m g n f am o wu rewa .By th on ruetion of k on rol fo the ar ous swingings emb r ma ipulat recordroll, and means carried by said end plate locking means for perforating said record strip upon therelease of the locking engagement with the side frame.
I 3. In an autographic register having side frames, a top swinging marginal frame, end plates pivotally mounted, one adapted to engage with said marginal frame, the opposite end plate provided with means for locking the same in engagement with said side frame, connections between said end plates, whereby the position of one controls the other inlocking and releasing all of the hinged members opening into the interior of the register. 7
4. In an autographic register having side frames, pivotally mounted end plates, and a swinging marginal frame, one. of said end plates engaging with said marginal frame to maintain the same in closed position, means for locking the opposite end plates in closed position, and connections between said end plates, whereby one controls the movement of the other.
5. Inan autographic register having side frames, pivotally mounted end plates, and a swinging marginal frame, one of said end plates engaging with said marginal frame to maintain the same in closed position,
means for locking the opposite end plates in closed position, and connections between saidend plates, whereby the one controls the movement 'of the other, and means actuated by said locking means for denoting upon a record strip within the register each release for unlocking of "the end plate.
6. In an autographic register, a casing, a hinged plate for access to the interior of the casing, a hinged margin frame, a key-controlled lock for one of said hinged members relative tothe casing, means for locking the other member to the casing and operating connections between said hinged members, whereby the operation of the key-controlled member actuates the lock of the other hinged member.
7. In an autographic register, a casing,,a writing table, a hinged margin frame over the table, a hinged front plate for'access to the interior of the casing, means for locking said hinged members to the casing, and operating connections between said hinged gmembers whereby the manipulation of one of to engage said record strip and denote each lock releasing movement thereon.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set said hinged members actuates the lock of the other hinged member.
