To (tit whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIC AEL R. Manna, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Vending-Cabinet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
;-\mong the principal objects which this invention has in view are: to provide a cabinet from which may be delivered accurately and certainly the material to be weighed; to provide a delivery chute and sack holding scales tray adapted to accom modate sacks of different dimensions; to provide a bin for holding the material to be handled and agitating devices mounted therein for delivering the material in the path of the chute above mentioned; and to provide a cabinet adapted to contain sacks and accessories for receiving and packing the goods being handled.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a scales, a holding cabinet and delivering attachment for the said scales, all constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 4i; Fig. 1 is a. horizontal section taken on the line 11-1 in F 1; and Fig. 5 is a detail view in vertical section, of the weighing scales and tray connected therewith, showing in dotted lines the structural arrangement of the cabinet and delivery chute there for.
The class of goods for the handling of which this invention is designed is such as sugar, C(YlTCQ, or cereals. These and similar materials will. flow, and when contained within the bin they will rest upon the floor 11 thereof to flow into the passage 12 upon which the sides of the floor 11 converge. Pivotally mounted under the opening of the sides of the floor 11 is an agitating wheel 13. The wheel 13 has a series of straight paddle blades extended downward into the said passage, the object thereof being to agitate the material in the passage 12 to prevent the same from becoming clogged and to accelerate the flow therefrom into the compartment 14 and the bottom channel 15 thereof.
The wheel 13 is pivoted on a shaft at 16. It is rotated by a wheel 17 which is mounted fixedly on a driving shaft 18. The wheel 17 is provided with a series of pintles 19 to interleave between the paddles of the wheel 13 and to operate upon the said wheel in a manner similar to a spur gear wheel.
The shaft 18 is pivotally mounted in bearings in the frame of the cabinet, passing through a perforation in the partition wall 20. Fixedly mounted on the said shaft is a series of agitator rods 21, 21 extended. therefrom. to closely approach the inclined bottom of the bin 10 when the said shaft 18 is rotated. The rods 21, 21 are disposed within the bin 10. Fixedly attached to the said shaft and within the con'ipartment 1.1 is a delivery wheel 22. The wieel 22 is provided with a series of flat blades 28, 23 radially extended from the periphery of the said wheel. 22. The blades 2, 23 are provided with a surfaced area adapted to fill. the channel 15, the paddles being intended to lift the material as delivered into the said channel fronii the passage 12.
The shaft 18 is driven by means of a crank wheel 24, the same being provided with a hand hold 25. The wheel 24: pivotally mounted in a suitable socket formed in the end of the shaft 18. The wheel 21 and the shaft 18 are connected by a transmission mechanism embodying a sprocket wheel 26 fixedly mounted upon the head of the wheel 25%; a larger sprocket wheel 27 is mounted upon the shaft 18, bearings for which are provided in the side of the connoartment 1 1. Fixedly mounted upon the bearing carrying the wheel 27 is a wheel 28. The wheels 26 and 27 are operatively connected by a sprocket chain 29. The wheel 28 is operatively connected with a sprocket wheel 30 which is fixedly mounted upon the shaft 18, by means of a sprocket chain 31. The proportions of the wheels 26, 27, 28 and 30 are arranged to slow the speed of rotation and to multiply the power as applied to the wheel 2-1. It will be understood that these wheels may be varied to suit the purpose for which the invention is being handled, it being sometimes desired to rotate the shaft 18 at a higher rate of speed.
hen the material being handled is delivered into the channel 15, the rotation of the wheel 22 lifts the said material over the forward edge of the bottom channel 15 and into the vertical extension of the chute 32. The chute 32 is provided with a delivery portion 33, the contracted mouth of which is extended within the flared portion of the funnel The delivery neck 35 of the fun nel Ell is arranged to be inserted within the opening of sacks A, A when the same are placed upon the tray shelves 86, 36. The tray shelves 256, are supported on brackets 3T, 37 set out from the hanging rods 38 of the scales.
The scale employed by me in the present construction is a spring scale having an exposed dial plate 39 the pointer d of the said scale indicating the pounds weight deposited upon the shelves 36 3(5. The brackets 3T, 37 are arranged in pairs and may be disposed vertically between the rods 38. 38 so that the shelves 36 may be disposed in varied positions of vertical arrangement to receive sacks of different lengths.
Arranged below the bin and at one side of the compartment 1% and the scale rods 38, 38, is a cabinet a l. The cabinet -11 provided with a series of receptacles l2 42. The receptacles 4-2. &2 are formed to various sizes to adapt the same for holding sacks of various dimensions. The cabinetis further provided with a drawer 43 such a drawer being convenient for holding twine or other accessories.
In operation, the sugar or other material is placed within the bin 10 by opening the door H. lVhile I have shown in the drawings a simple spring actuated latch for closing the door ll, it will be understood that for the latch may be substituted any convenient form of safety lock. is preferably hinged as shown in the drawings and more particularly shown in Fig. 1 thereof. This may again be altered by inserting the door in cleats or dowels as a safety construction. The material being thus deposited, flows into the passage 12 if dried or free flowing into the compartment ll and within the channel 15 between the blades Q3 of the wheel hen now it is desired to weigh outa certain quantity of material the operator finds convenient to his need the sack of the size which ex perience has taught will accommodate the quantity of material ordered. The operator now turns the handle 24 and watches the pointer 40 on the dial plate 39 of the scale. As the material is received through the chute being thrown therein by the paddles 43 23 and from thence into the sacks A A the pointer i0 is gradually carried around until it arrives at the mark indicating the weight being measured. The operator atv this point arrests the machine and removes the sack A. as tilled from the shelf 3t), when the machine is in operation to resume or effect the next succeeding measure.
It will be noted that by the employment of this machine, the operation of weighing various quantities within the capacity of the scales is accelerated and the usual time for operating counter scales and the various accessories is thereby savedv Having thus described my inventiomwhat T claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- A vending cabinet comprising a bin for storing the material being handled said bin having a delivery passage at the bottom thereof; a rotary paddle wheel pivotally mounted in said bin and extended into said passage to agitate the material therein to prevent clogging thereof; a driving shaft extended through said bin and pivotally mounted therein; a plurality of agitator members extended from said shaft; a wheel i'ixedly mounted 011 said. shaft operatively connected with said rotary paddle wheel to operate the same in umson; a receiving com- 5 partment ad acent said bin having a receiv-v ing channel therein; a delivery wheel for said compartment having radial extensions to fill said channel; a crank wheel; a transmission mechanism connecting said crank wheel and said driving shaft; and an agitator for guiding the material delivered by said delivery wheel within a containing sack.
