Be it known that I, ORUS LHEUREUX, millwright, of St. Paul de Chester, eounty of Arthabaska, Province of Quebec, Domim ion of Canada, subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful hnprovements in Levels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine.
The invention relates to improvements in levels, as deseribed in the present specificatien and illustrated in the aceompanying drawings that forn1 part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel construction and arrangement 01 parts whereby the true incline of a plurality of inelined surfaces nxay be determined by an attaclnnent to a level whieh brings said level t0 a horizontal plane on one of said surfaces.
The objects of the invention are to facilitate the building of structures having roofs or other parts with inclined beams or surfaces, and to provide an instrument of simple, eheap and durable construction.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is the level block having the eustomary spirit levels 9 and 3, a vertical and grooved recess 4 ad jacent to one end and a lateral lxole 5 from the bed of one of the grooves of said recess intermediate of its height through to the opposite side of the level.
6 is a plate correspondingly forn1ed to the vertical reeess 4 having the slidewvay 7 centrally recessed at 8 and the flanges 9 through WhiCh are the screw holes 10. The plate 6 is securely attaehed in the recess 1 and has a hole 11 through the reeess portion 8 registerng with the hole 5.
12 is a tube inserted in the hole 5.
13 is a fiat spring suitably countersunk in the back or the opposite side to the recess 4:
of the level bl0ck 1 and terminatng at the end of the level at the tlnunb groovd 14-.
15 is a pin rigidly seeured to the inner side of the spring 13 and extending inwardly through the tube 12 into the recess 8.
16 is the elevating rack rigidly sccured to the plates 17 and extending inwardly therefrom, said rack and said plates being mounted on the foot 18, said foot extending laterally at 19 from said rack and inwardly at 20. The rack 16 and the plate 17 slide upwardly and downwardly in the plate G,thc said racle extending into the recess 8 so that the pin 15 Will be in constant engagement with one or another of the tecth. The plates 17 fit into the slide-way 7 and slide npwardly and clownwardly therein.
91 is an indicating finger rigid with the rack 16 adjacent to the upper end thereof, said finger extending outwardly from the baek of said rack and beiug bent parallcl with the plate 17.
22 is a plate having tl1o graduations 23 thereon and sccured in the outer side of the block 1 ovcr one of the plates 17 and under the finger 21 and having the heel portion 24: extending aeross the baek of the rack and secured to said block, said l1eel portion having the lug 25 extendiug upWardly forming thc reeess 26 into which the said finger enters at its lowermost position to reach the lower gracluati0ns.
27 is a face plate extending upwardly from the lug 25 and bent ovcr the top of the bloek 1 and secured on the top and the side of said bloek.
28 is a face plate extending from the top over the end and top of said block, said plate 28 having a slot 29 uncovering a tlnnnb groove in the bottom of the bl0ck 1 up to which said foot 18 reaches in the uppcrm0st position of the 'ack 16, so that by inserting the thumb in the said groove, uncovered by the slot 29, the foot may be lowered when the rack is released.
30 is a dial secured to the front side of the level bl0ek 1 having the points 31 and 82 at right angles as usual in such forms of levels.
33 is the pointer pivotally secu1ed in the center of the dial 30 and weighted at the lower end so that it Will always bang in a direct clownward line and thus obviate the necessity of looking into the spirit levels When that portion of the instrument is out of mach of the eye.
In the use of this instrument, the precise slant of a beam is ascertained by raising the end of the block on the foot 18. This is done by releasing the pin from engagement With the rack 16 in the manner described, and drawing ont said foot 18, that end of the block being elevated until the said block reaches the horizontal plane whioh is determined in the usual way. On the block reaching the horizontal plane, the outward pressure on the spring 13 is released, allowing the pin to again engage the rack. The instrument is then set and the graduations on the graduation plate 23 Will show the slant per foot. This part of the device Will not be described further herein, as many forms of graduating marks may be used. The instrument being set on one slanting beam is ready for use on all of the others, so that precision will be attained in the building up of said bea1ns l'or roofing or other purposes.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a deVice of the class desoribed, in combination, a block having level indicating devices and a recess toward one end in a side and a hole leading from said recess through to the other side, a plate having a.
suitable slide-way secured in said recess, a slidable plate arranged in said slide-way plate, a toothed bar rigid with said slidable plate, a foot secured to the lower end of said toothed bar, a pin extending through said hole engaging said toothed bar, and a fiat spring secured to the other side of said block and rigidly supporting said pin and idly secured to said rack and sliding in said grooved plate, an indicating finger rigid with said rack extending. rearwardly there from and bent over parallel with said plates, a foot rigidly secured to the lower end of said-rack and extending laterally therefrom and terminating at the end 0]: said block, a pin extending through said hole and engaging said rack, a fiat spring secured at one end to said block on the opposite side from said rack and terminating at the end of said block, a plate having a graduated scale thereon and rigidly secured to said block under said finger and over said plates supporting the rack, and a face plate completing the inclosure of said rack and sliding plates rigidly secured to said block.
