To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SEIDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful lVoven Tubular Muffler, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a novel woven tubular muffler which is reinforced in a novel manner at the edges at which occurs the greatest wear on the fabric.
It further consists of a novel construction of a woven tubular muffler in which opposite edges of the same are woven in a novel man ner relatively to the body portion of the muffler.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings those embodiments thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a woven tubular muffler embodying my invention and showing a portion of the pattern. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of another embodiment of my invention. Fig. 3 represents a plan view, on an enlarged scale, of a portion of my device showing the relatively closer weave. Fig. 1 represents a plan view, on an enlarged scale, of a portion of my device, showing a stripe which may be employed if desired. Fig. 5 represents a diagrammatical view showing more clearly the manner in which the muffler is woven.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a muffler embodying my invention which may be shaped intermediately of its ends, as seen at 2 in Fig. 1, in order to more closely fit the neck of the wearer and the ends, if desired, may form a fringe 3, although in many cases arising in practice, I form the mulller of uniform diameter and dispense with the fringe at the ends, as indicated in Fig. 2.
In mufflers, as heretofore constructed,in so far as I am aware, it has been deemed impossible to reinforce the mufller at points of greatest wear without varying the appearance of the mulller. In my present invention I accomplish this by passing the wefts around each warp, as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 5. In the body portion 4 of the mulller the weft 5 passes around two of the i'arp threads (3 while at opposite edges of the muiller, as indicated at 7 the weft 5 passes around a single warp (3, so that at the points of greatest wear the fabric will be reinforced but, owing to the manner in which the same is woven, the body of the fabric and the edges will have the same general appearance. In the present instance, I reinforce the edges of the fabric by passing the weft 5 around twelve of the warp threads (5 but it will of course be apparent that the number of single warp threads which are reinforced may be varied in accordance with the an'iount of material which it is desired to reinforce.
In somecases it is desirable to weave a stripe in the mulller, as indicated at 8, although the cha 'acter of such stripe may be varied as desired and in many cases the same may be entirely dispensed with.
It will be apparent that a mulllcr constructed in this manner will be seamless and will not be liable to be ripped or torn.
It will be apparent that if desired a separate lining may be employed in coimection with the mulller in order to give it additional weight or body.
Owing to the manner in which the mulller is reinforced at the points of greatest wear the durability and life of the muiller is greatly increased.
It will be evident that since the entire muiller is formed during the weaving operation the cost of production is greatly cheapencd relatively to the cost of mzmufacturing mulllers in the ordinary way.
Owing to the novel manner in which the muffler is reinforced at diametrically opposite points the same retains its shape under all conditions and is not liable to become distorted when the same is stretched or pulled.
In some cases it is desirable to form a cross bar or stripe 9 during the operation of weaving and any number of these stripes may be employed so that in proximity to the ends of the muiller the body portion thereof is relatively thicker and stronger.
It will now be apparent that I have -de-- features of advantage enumerated as Cl6Sll'- able in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the inventionor sacrificing any ofits advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to-secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a Woven tubular inutller having its bodypor- 20 tion composed of wefts passing around a plurality of-Warp threads and having a longitudinally extending reinforcement of the same material as said muffler in the body portion thereof, said reinforcement consist-,
ing of a closer weave at diametrically opposite portions of the m'ufiler formed by the wefts passing around each warp.
