Description

P. R. BATCHELDER.
W OVEN STRAP.
APPLICATION FILED/JULY 14,1911.

y wam FRANK ROE BATCI-IELDER, 0F WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
WOVEN STRAP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK Ron BATOHEL- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in W oven Straps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in a woven web which is woven with an integral loop that receives and confines a portion of the length of the web and serves as a keeper therefor.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which latter Figure l is a View of a strap containing the said embodiment. Fig. 2 is a view in section in the plane of dotted line 00, 00, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in section in the plane of dotted line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
For convenience in illustrating the inven tion I have chosen a web in the form of a strap comprising a woven band or body-portion 1 with a buckle 2 attached to one end thereof, and having in its opposite end-portion 3 a series of holes 4, 4, etc., that are reinforced by eyelets, to receive the tongue 5 of the said buckle. At 6, 6, are loops woven integral with the band or body-portion 1, to receive and confine the part of said end-portion 3 which extends beyond the buckle after having been passed therethrough. The metal tip upon such end-portion is designated 8.
The shape and weave of the band or bodyportion 1 may be varied in practice, to suit the views of the manufacturer and user, or the particular purpose or use intended to be subserved. Herein, the said band or bodyportion is represented as a solid two-ply web, each ply comprising warp-threads a, a, and weft b, and the two plies being tied to gether by the weft at intermediate points in the width of the web. Each loop is formed by interweaving the weft-thread which-enters into the band or body-portion, or it might be an additional weft-thread, with an additional series of warp-threads, (Z, (Z. In the present instance I have shown the same weft-thread which interweaves in the two plies of the band or body-portion of the strap interwoven with the said additional warpthreads. tional warp-threads is employed to produce a loop of the required dimensions to receive within the same the end-portion 3 of the strap. A length of loop -ply somewhat Patented June 17,1913.
longer than the loop itself is woven, so as to produce at each end of the loop an additional amount of the loop-ply sufficient to be turned inwardly within the loop, as shown in Fig. 3, to give finished edges to the loop. The turned-in portions at both ends of the loop areY secured by transverse lines of stitches I have shown the strap furnished with two keeper-loops, but if preferred, or as may be required, it may be produced with a single keeper-loop, or with more than two. The mode of weaving the keeper-loop may vary. In lieu of the buckle herein shown the web may have secured thereto other forms of attachments through which the end-portion 3 may pass. The additional ortions which are woven upon the ends of t lde loop for the purpose of being turned in, as described above, are produced by the employment of a second shuttle carrying weft b.
l/Vhat is claimed as the invention is,-
1. A web comprising a longitudinal body and a transverse keeper-loop woven integral therewith, receiving within it a portion of the length of the body, and of greater width than such portion.
2. A web comprising a body, and a loop woven integral therewith, said loop composed of a loop-ply longer than the loop itself and having a projecting portion thereof turned in, producing thereby a finished edge.
3. A web comprising a body, and a loop woven integral therewith, said loop composed of a loop-ply longer than the loop itself and having projecting end-portions thereof turned inwardly within the loop, thereby producing finished edges to the loop.
4. A web comprising a longitudinal body and a transverse keeper-loop woven therewith, of greater width than the portion of the body upon which it is formed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
