Specication of Letters Patent.

Patented Mar. 14, 1911. Serial No. 600,079.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. MURDOOK, a resident of Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to hinges and more particularly to that class of hinges comprising two leaves with knuckles formed thereon through which a pintle passes to hold the parts together.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eflicient means for preventing rotation of the pintle connectiugthe leavesso that in the working of the hinge, the pintle will not rise or work out and thereby reduce the efficiency of the hinge and at the same time mar the appearance of same.
To these ends my invention comprises, generally stated, a hinge comprising two leaves with hinge knuckles, a plug entering the lower knuckle, and pintle in removable non-rotary engagement with said plug.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a face view of my invention, with the hinge partly in section; Fig. 2 is a perspec tive view of the pintle; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plug, and Figs. 4, 5 and G show a modified form of my invention.
In the drawing the numerals 2 and 3 indicate the leaves of a suitable hinge. The leaf 2 is provided with the knuckles 1 and 5, and the leaf 3 is provided with the knuckles G, 7 and 8. The lowermost knuckle 8 contains the plug 9 which is such a snug titthat when driven within said knuckle it will be held securely therein. The plug 9 may, however, be secured in place in any suitable manner. This plug 9 is provided with the enlargement or bulb 10 which is to add to the finish of the hinge and correspond with the bulb 11 at the upper end of the pintle 12. The inner end of the plug 9 is cut away as at 13 to form an interlocking or non-rotary connection with the Vpintle 12, which is likewise cut-away at the lower end as at 14, so that when the pintle 12 is inserted Wit-hin the openings in the knuckles the lower end can be seated to engage the cut-away portion ofthe plug 9 and all rotary motion of the pintle is prevented while it is in engagement with said plug. In this manner I provide a simple and efficient means for preventing rotation of the pintle without in any way changing the construction of the hinge, and the removal of the pintle is accomplished by simply lifting the same as in the ordinary manner.
In Figs. 4, 5 and G, I have illustrated a modified form of my invention in which the plug 15 is cut away at its inner end to form the slot- 1G which receives the reduced end portion 17 of the pintle 18. When the pintle is inserted it is turned until the portion 17 engages the slot 1G of the plug, when further rotation of the pintle is prevented.
IVhat- I claim is:
1. A hinge comprising leaves and knuc kles, a plug engaging the lowermost knuckle, and a pintle in removable non-rotary engagement with said plug.
2. A hinge comprising leaves and knuckles, a plug engaging the lowermost knuckle, said plug having a cut-away portion, and a pintle engaging said cut-away portion.
In testimony whereof, I the said ROBERT L. MURDOOK have hereunto set my hand.
ROBERT L. MURDOCK.
