To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS 1V. KEYER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in corner constructions for collapsible paper boxes.
The object of the invention is to provide an interlocking corner construction which will not pull apart under the most severe usage to which the box may be put, and which, owing to the specific construction of the interlocking members, may be easily assembled or set up.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a collapsible paper box provided with my improved interlocked corner construction. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one corner of the blank. Fig. 3 is an end view of the box, one ofthe corners of which is in the act of being interlocked or constructed.
In the specification and drawings, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the bottom of the box. Formed integral therewith are sides 3 and ends 4 which fold on the score lines 2. Integral with the sides 3 are fiaps 6, which fold on the score lines 5 around the corners of the box. These flaps 6 have each a neck portion 7 which provides locking heads 8. The locking heads 8 thus extended from the sides of the box, have ears 9 and 10' of special construction as will presently appear, in order to facilitate placing them in position and to enable them to serve as locks for the corners of the box. The ends 1 of the box are provided with slits 11, also of special construction in that the said slits have upper angular portions 12 and lower shorter angular portions 13. \Vhen the blank from which the box is formed, is folded into a box, the sides 3 and ends 4 are bent at right angles along the longitudinal score lines 2.. The interlocking heads 8 of the corner flap 6, are inserted within the slits 11. It will be seen from 3, that the lower angular portions 13 of the slits 11 lie on arcs'the centers of which are the intersections of the score lines 2, which allows the locking heads 8 to be easily inserted within the slits 11. It will also be observed that the inner edges of the ears 10 are curved or rounded from the points of the necks 7, and such rounded edges afford the least resistance to a free entrance into the slits 11. Likewise the outer edges of said heads 8 are rounded from one end to the other. while the inner edges of the ears 9 are straight and extend in right angles to the necks by which said locking heads are united to the corner flaps 6, as previously described. When the corner flaps are thus interlocked, the ears 10 interlock with the angular portions 13 of said slits 11 so that there is no possibility of said ears becoming detached from the ends of the box during any amount of usage. It will also be observed that the straight edges of the ears 9 also extend over a portion of the angular slits 14, which are terminals of the slits in the end walls of the box. The ends thus united to the corner flaps 6, are maintained securely in such position by these special constructions of the slits and the locking heads as above described.
I claim:
A paper box having end and side walls extending from a bottom and folding at right angles to said bottom, the end walls being provided with slits 11 which terminate in upper angular portions 14 and lower angular portions 13 of less length than the angular portions 14 of said slits, the lower angular portions 13 being radial with the lower edges of the sides of the box, the said sides of the box being provided with corner flaps 6 which terminate in looking heads 8 having ears 9 and 10 of unequal length, the
