Description

v W. 0. FRENCH. HOOD FOR FIREARM SIGHTS.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 25, 1910.

WILLARD O. FRENCH, OF CLINTON, WASHINGTON.
HOOD FOR FIREARM-SIGHTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 25, 1910.
Patented Mar. 7, 1911.
Serial No. 545,938.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD O. Fnnxcir, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Clinton, in the county of Island and State of lvashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoods for Firearm-Sights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hoods for tire arm sights, and has for an object to provide a hood which is especially designed for use in connection with the rear sight of a rifle and associated with respect thereto to shield it to an extent from such light reflections that might tend to mar the purpose of the sight and render it objectionable in accurately sighting the front sight.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure l is a detail side elevation of a portion of a. rifle showing my improved hood applied to the rear sight thereof. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the hood.
My improved hood is designed particularly for use in connection with the rear sight upon the well known IVinchester rifle but it is obvious that it is adapted for use in connection with rifles or other fire arms in which front and rear sight-s are employed. The rifle 1 herein shown has its barrel provided with a rear sight 3, the same being of such construction that it may be adjusted in a vertical plane and also in a plane longitudinally of the barrel. The member 4 or those portions of the side edges of the member a which extend outwardly beyond the sides of the top surface of the barrel, as shown at 4: in which the slide or sight piece 3 is mounted is provided with arcuate edge portions or portions of any other suitable configuration which will permit convenient and quick attachment of the hood to the barrel. The hood 5 is preferably formed from a single piece of sheet material, prefstamped. to provide longitudinally extend ing side walls 6 whose lower edges are bent to form inwardly directed flanges 7 which are adapted to fit beneath the arcuate edges of the member 4-. The side walls (3 of the hood are connected by a top member or crown 8 which extends longitudinally of the barrel and is disposed immediately above the sight piece or slide 3 in suitable spaced relation thereto. A retaining and stopforming screw 9 is operatively connected with the side walls (3 of the hood and is adapted. for operation to move the walls toward each other and into clamping engagement with the ar'cuate surfaces of the said member -l.
The hood 5 as herein shown and described is extremely simple in construction and it may be applied readily to the barrel of a the arm of any form where it. is desired to exclude the light from the sight. The use of the article when associated with the rear sight excludes to a desired extent such light "ays as would tend to blur the vision of the shooter and prevent his accurately finding the front sight. In associating the hood with the rear sight the former is moved onto the barrel from the rear thereof until the adjusting screw abuts against the sight, after which the screw is adjusted to hold the hood operatively applied to the barrel.
I claim:
The combination with a barrel and a sight therefor, the said sight including a member whose side edges extend beyond the sides of the upper surface of the barrel, of a hood detachably engaged with the barrel and comprising a member having a crown portion above the sight. and disposed. longitudinally of the barrel, and spaced side portions ex tending downwardly at the sides of the sight and formed at their lower edges to provide longitudinal clamping flanges for engagement ben ath the said outwardly extending side portions of the member of the sight, and a combined clamping and stop forming screw passing through the said side portions erably metal, and as shown, the material is 1 of the hood and adjustable therein to move the side portions to a position to cause the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature flanges thereof to be clamped against the in presence of two witnesses.
said outwardl extendin side oortions of the member oi the sight, the said crew being WILLARD FRENCH" 5 designed to engage the member to limit the Witnesses:
movement of the hood in one direction on J. SALISBURY,
the barrel. MARTHA I. SALISBURY.
