To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAREY D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Level, in the county of Covington and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plows, and one of the objects of the same is to provide novel means for adjusting the position of the plow point relative to the plow beam and to hold the same securely locked in its adjusted angular position.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means cooperating with said angular adjustment means to lock the plowshare or shovel securely in position and at the same time provide ready means for detaching the plow point from its stock, permitting of the use of different forms of implements, such as hoes, shovels, etc., as well as provide for plow points of different thicknesses or constructions.
Other advantages will appear from the following description, and with these objects in view the invention consists of the arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
While the invention is not restricted to the exact details shown and described, still for the purpose of disclosure reference is had to the accompanying drawings illustrating the same, in which drawings like characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved plow with the parts locked in one of their adjustable positions. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, one arm of the stock and its locking rack being omitted to show the share clamp in elevation, a section being taken centrally through the share or plow point. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. l is a view in side elevation with the several parts shown in non-adjustable positions, and Fig. 5 is a view in rear elevation.

3 are the stock arms, one mounted on each side of the plow beam and pivotally connected thereto, as at 4, the lower end of the 1 the forward upper face of the implemenhye stock arms curving downwardly and rearwardly and held spaced apart at their bottom by spacing means 5 (Fig. 5), the upper portions of the stock arms extending forwardly along the side of the plow beam, and provided at their forward ends with means interlocking with the latching member hereinafter described.
Any suitable means may be employed for forming an adjustable interlock between the forward end of the stock arms and the plow beam, and in the drawings this has been illustrated by a latching member comprising a pair of vertically disposed racks 6 mounted on opposite sides of the plow beam and pivotally connected thereto by means of the bolt 7, the rack bars having the rearwardly extending teeth '8. The upper ends of the rack bars extend above the plow beam and are connected by means of a locking rod 9 extending across the top of the beam.
The upper face of the plow beam is recessed, as at 10, and set within this recess is a plate 11 secured to the beam in any suitable way, as by screws 12, and having an upper locking plate 13 hinged thereto at its rear end, and provided on its underneath face with a notch 1e adapted to engage over said locking rod 9 which is disposed between the plates 11 and 13. The plate 13, at its forward end, is slotted vertically, as at 15, and disposed through this slot is a locking button 16 rotatably secured to the plate 11 by means of the shank 17 and the head 18. The shank 17 allows the locking button to pass through the slot 15 and engage over the top of the plate 13 for holding same securely in its closed position.
The forward edges of the stock arms are provided with means coacting with the rear edge of the rack, or rack bars, and this means may be in the form of a tongue, or a pair of tongues, and the recess 19, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
At the lower curved end of the stock arms is arranged the plow point 20, the rear face of this tool or implement resting against the lower forward edges of the stock arms, which are of a contour to adapt themselves to the rear face of the implement, and the implement, whether it be a plow point, a shovel, hoe, or similar device, is provided with an aperture 21 through which passes the lower arm 22 of a U-shaped clamp, the
cross arm 23 of which is adapted to engage;
and the upper arm 24: of which is provided 011 its upper edge with a rack 25. Both arms 22 and 24 of the clamping member extend rearwardly between the stock arms 3, and
the lower arm 22 is pivoted thereto, as at 26, a nut 27 being provided on the rear threaded end of the arm 22.

and provided on its lower end with the gear member 30 meshing with the rack 25.
Toward the upper end of the lever 28 it is provided with a rotatably secured locking button 31 extending through a slot 32 in a loeking lever 33 pivoted to the plow beam at the rear of said clamping lever.
From the foregoing it will be observed that if it is desired to change the position of the plow point with relation to the beam,
the locking button 16 is turned to permit the hinged plate 13 to be swung upwardly, releasing the locking rod 9 from notch 1 1 and allowing the forward upper end of the stock arms to be adjusted upwardly or clownwardly. with reference to the rack bars 6, when these rack bars are interlocked again with the forward ends of the stock arms and the hinged plate 13 folded down and locked in position. So also it will be seen that the clamping lever 28, cooperating with the rack on the clamp member, may be moved to securely clamp the plow implement in place, and when so secured the locking lever is brought into cooperation with the clamping 35 lever and is locked thereto by means ofthe locking button 31, so that the plow point, the stock arms, and the plow beam are all rigidly interlocked in the desired adjusted position.
Having thus described a practical and preferred embodiment of the invention, the particular features of novelty will now be pointed out more succinctly in the following claims 1. The combination of a plow beam, a stock pivoted thereto having its rear end curving rearwardly and downwardly and its forward end extending longitudinally of the plow beam, an agricultural tool connected to the lower end of said stock and means for adjusting the upper end ofsaid stock comprising a pivoted rack cooperating with the forward end of said stock arm, and means for locking said rack in engagement with said stock arms in varying positions of ad justment, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a plow beam, a stock pivoted thereto having its rear end curving rearwardly and downwardly and its forward end extending longitudinally of the plow beam, an agricultural tool connected to the lower end of said stock and means for adjusting the upper end of said stock comprising a pivoted rack cooperating with the 5 forward-end of said stock arm, and means for locking said rack in engagement with said stock arms in varying positions of adjustment comprising a hinged plate mounted on said plow beam having a notch on its underneath face, and a locking rod connected to said pivoted rack and disposed between said hinged plate and said plow beam to be engaged within said notch, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a plow beam, a pair of stock arms pivoted thereon having their forward ends disposed longitudinally of said beam and provided with notches therein, an agricultural implement secured to the lower end of said arms, a plate hinged to the upper face of said beam and having a transverse notch on its underneath face and a vertical slot at its forward end, a locking button rotatably secured to said plow beam and adapted to cooperate with said slot, a pair of rack bars pivoted to said plow beam and having rearwardly disposed teeth cooperating with the notches in the forward ends of said stock arm, and a locking rod connecting the upper ends of said racks and disposed between said plow beam and said hinged plate and adapted to be engaged within said transverse notch, substantially as described.

In a plow, the combination of a plow beam, a pair of stock arms carried thereby and means for securing the plow point to said stock arms comprising a U-shaped clamping member disposed between said stock arms, the lower arm of said clamping member extending through an aperture in said plow point and the upper arm of said clamping member being provided with a rack, a clamping lever having a gear member on its lower end engaging said rack, and means for locking said clamping lever in its adjusted position, substantially as described.
5. In a plow, the combination of a plow beam, a pair of stock arms carried thereby and means for securing the plow point to said stock arms comprising a U-shaped clamping member disposed between said stock arms, the lower arm of said clamping member extending through an aperture in said plow point and the upper arm of said clamping member being provided with a rack, a clamping lever having a gear member on its lower end engaging said rack, and means for locking said clamping lever in its adjusted position comprising a looking button rotatably secured to said clamping lever and projecting rearwardly therefrom and a locking lever pivoted to said plow beam having a slot therethrough adapted to receive said locking button and lock said levers together, substantially as described.
6. In a plow, the combination of a plow beam, a pair of stock arms pivoted thereon, said stock arms extending longitudinally of the beam at their upper forward ends,
means permitting of the vertical adjustment of the upper ends of said stock arms and holding same looked in their adjusted position, a plow point, means securing the plow point to the lower end of said stock arms comprising a U-shaped clamping member disposed between said stock arms, the lower arm of said clamping member being pivoted to said stock arms and the upper arm being provided with a rack, a clamping lever having a gear member cooperating with said rack, a locking lever pivoted to said plow beam and engaging said clamping lever, and locking means between said clamping lever I and locking lever, whereby the upper forward ends of the stock arms are adjustably l secured to said plow beam and the plow point and the lower end of said stock arms are rigidly locked to the rear end of the plow beam in their adjusted position, substantially as described.
