Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID PHILLIPS, OF OIL CITY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO DANIEL M.
ZOOK AND HERMAN KLINGMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TONGS FOR Lll-'TING AND ADJUSTING WELL-TUBING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 98,625, dated January 4, 1870; antedated .December 18, 1869.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID PHILLIPS, of Oil Oity, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful 1 mprovement in Tongs for Handling Well-Tubing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for handling well-tubing, either for placing it in the well or withdrawing it therefrom, designed to provide an improved grabbin g-ton gs for takin g hold of the tubing to suspend it on the crane or derriek for elevating or lowering it.
It consists in a tongs having clamping-jaws for clamping the tubing capable of rotation on the ends of the legs of the tongs, so that the latter may lie in a horizontal position on the ground or platform while clamping and holding the tubing in avertical position, and be raised to a vertical position by the hoisting rope. The said tongs are also provided with a swivel, whereby the pipe may be screwed or unscrewed while suspended by the derrick, all as hereinafter more fully specified.
The drawing represents an elevation of my improved device, with the jaws shown in section.
A and B represent thelegs of a pair of tongs crossing each other and pivoted at C. They are bent at right angles at their lower ends, and provided with grooved or semicircular jaws D, so secured that they may turn around in vertical planes. The upper ends of the legs A B are provided with a sliding link, E, permanently connected to one, but detachably connected to the other. They are also provided with a ring, F, similarly connected thereto, and another ring, G, is swiveled to the ring F.
For drawing the tubing out ot' a well the jaws D may be clamped thereto below the joining ferrule H, which may be supposed to project slightly above the groundl, while the tongs are lying on the ground. The derrick or hoisting rope may be then connected to the ring G, and the tongs raised to the vertical position, the ends of the legs turning in the jaws D, elevating the pi pe as high as the rope will admit. Then another tongs, similarly constructed, may be clamped to the pipe below another ferrule and laid on the ground. These will hold the pipe below from rotating, and also suspend it while the joint above the said tongs may be unscrewed, while suspended by the rope, by turning the rst tongs, which is permitted by the swivel-connection of the rings F and G. The derrick-rope, after discharging the unscrewed portion, may be lowered and attached to the second tongs, to again elevate the tubing.
Under a slight Inoditication, which will be readily understood, this process is applicable also for lowering the tubing into the well, and by the said process the labor is great faeilitated. l
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described improved tongs, having the jaws D, clamping-link E, rings F and Gr, and swivel combined therewith, and arranged suhstantially as specified.
DAVID PHILLIPS.
