COMBINED PICTURE-FRAME AND PORTFOLIO.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEVEN SoLEToKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Picture-Frames and Portfolios, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined photograph portfolios and picture frames and the object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character whereby all of the photographs or pictures in a collection may be exhibited by simply opening the portfolio and without turning any leaves as with book portfolios.
A further object of the invention is the arovision of a device of this character which will be ornamental when closed and which will be strong and readily operated to display pictures therein.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which:
Figure l is a front elevation of the device in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view in open position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section in open position. Fig. 4 is a front elevation with parts broken away. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the main frame which is provided with a rectangular recess 2 having a shoulder 3 formed therein adapted to limit the inward movement of the auxiliary picture frame 4 which is hingedto the bot tom wall of the recess 2 and has a picture 5 secured therein beneath the glass front 6. The base of the recess 2 comprises a cloth covered board 7 upon which pictures or photographs are supported by means of tacks 8 or as will hereinafter be described for the rear of the auxiliary picture frame. Connected to the upper wall of the recess 2 are tapes or other suitable supporting members 9 which have connected to their lower ends the auxiliary leaf 10 which, when the device is open, is adapted to hang with its upper edge below the top edge of the picture frame 4 which is inverted in this position. This leaf 10 comprises a cloth covered board which may have the pictures glued or secured thereon in any suitable manner and when the device is closed seats in the Specification of Letters Patent.

recess 2 and is held in position therein by the auxiliary frame 4.
The picture 5 has a cloth backing l1 and stretched thereacross are suitable tapes or ribbons 12 which are adapted to receive beneath their marginal edges the photographs 13. The back is prevented from dropping too far by chains 14 which are connected to the frame 4 and the inner side walls of the recesses.
Slidably mounted in the frame is a rod 15 having a finger button 16 on its lower end by which the rod is manipulated. The upper end of the rod is connected to a catch lever 17 which is pivoted as at 18 and has its outer end formed into a hook 19 to engage a pin 20 on the frame 4 and lock the same in position. The lever is actuated in both directions manually. A suitable spiral spring is seated in the frame and projects from the shoulder 3 as shown at 21 so that when the hook end 19 is released, the frame 4 will be thrown outwardly and thereby placed in a position to be lowered as shown in Fig. 2.
Under normal conditions, the device is folded and locked into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4 with the leaf 10 held in the recess by the picture frame. When it is desired to exhibit the photographs or pictures in the portfolio, the rod 15 is operated to release the hook end 19 of the pin 20 and the spring 21 acts to throw the picture frame 4 outwardly. The frame 4 is then grasped and lowered to the position shown in Fig. 2 and the leaf 10 is taken out of the recess and dropped below the picture frame so that the pictures on the board 7, on the cloth 11 and on the leaf 10 are exhibited all at one time.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a main frame having a recess therein, of an auxiliary picture frame hinged to the main frame and adapted to close said recess, a leaf adapted to seat in the recess and to be held in position by said. picture frame, said picture frame adapted to be lowered to expose its rear face, means for flexibly supporting said leaf below the picture frame, and means to support portfolios on the rear of the picture frame, on the leaf, and in the recess.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a main frame having a recess therein, a board forming the bottom I limiting the downward movement of the of the recess, and adapted to receive picture picture frame, and flexible means for supretaining devices, an auxiliary picture frame having a picture therein and hinged to the lower wall of the recess and adapted to close said recess, means carried by the back of the picture frame for holding additional pictures, a picture supporting leaf adapted to seat in said recess and be held in position therein by the picture frame, means for porting the leaf below the picture frame when in open position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
