Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. V, 1:911.
Application filed .Tune 20, 1907. Serial No. 379,934.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK 'Hnmnucnson, V
of Three Forks, in the county of Kootenay, in the Province of British Columbia, Canads, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Combination-Tools, of which the following is 'a specification.
My invention relates to a folding rule, or measure, constructed. thatitl may be utilized as a square; plumb; level and bevel-square. The rule is divided into twohalf sections by a hinge that may be locked to set the two halves at right angles, to-provide a trysquare. On one of the side faces of the hinge is marked inclination degrees, that the two halves may be ad usted to provide a bevel-square. In one of the legs in one half section of the rule is a spirit tube, that the device may be used as a level; and in one of the legs in the other half section is a spirit tube, provided that the device may be usedas a plumb. The entire edges of the ruleare marked off with graduations, that measurements may be had from any point, or in any of the different uses the device may be put to.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the hinge set to provide a try-square; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the hinge section of the device showing the inclination degrees marked by which the hinge. may be adjusted to provide a bevel-square; Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the hinge section opened out; Fig. t is a detail perspective view of the female section of the hinge; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the male section of the hinge; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of .the side p ates of the, female section of the hinge.
llike letters refer to like parts throughout thespecification and the drawings.
Asshown in the drawings the rule comprises four. legs, a, h, c, and a), each of the being six and a half inches in length; but I makc 'no claim to the length or the number of legs. The legs 6 and c are hinged together by a hinge comprising male and female sections, the male section 1, forming part of the leg section 0, and the female section forming part of the leg section 7). The male section 1 of the hinge is adapted to interpose between the parts comprising the female section, and is cast or shapedfrom metal, and formed. with a tongue 3. Formed on thetop edge of the tongue is a semi-circular pivot section 4, and formed in one of the side faces is a circular groove 5.
66 designate fastening plates by which the tongue 3 is fastened to. the leg section 0.
The plates are riveted to the side faces of I the tongue, and to the side faces of the leg section, the sides of the leg section being cut away suilicient for the thickness of the plates, so that they provide a flush surface.
7-7 designate metal strips fastened along the top and bottom edges of the leg section 0. The strips also extend over the top and bottom edges of the tongue 3, and are riveted thereto, by which the tongue is further fastened to the leg section. are also for the purpose of protecting the edges of the leg section.
The female section 2 of the hinge is made up from two plates 8 and 9, formed with tongue sections 10, corresponding in shape and size with the tongue 3 of themale section. Formed on the top edges of the plates 8 and 9, are semi-circular pivot secetions 11 and. 12 corresponding inshape and size with The strips 7-7 the pivot section 4: of the male section.
Formed on the inside face of the pivot sec-- tion 12 of the plate 9, is a circular rib 13 adapted to engage in the groove 5 formed in the side face of the pivot section 4 of the male section, when the hinge is assembled, and is for the purpose 'of maintaining a rigid and firm bearing joint free from twisting. Also formedon the side face of the pivot section 12 Fig 6 is a bearing pin 14',
adapted to engage in a seat 15 formed in the side face of'the pivot section 11, and pro vide bearing adapted to engage in a bore 16, formed through the pivot section 4 of the male section 1. The pin 14 forms the pivot on which the'two halves of the rule are practically hinged. The plates 8 and .9 are riveted to the leg section b, and may also be riveted together, by rivets passing through the pivot section 11 into the pin 14-.
Along the top and bottom edges of the leg sections I), are metal strips 7-7 similar to those on the top and bottom edges of'the leg section-c.
In the leg section Z) is set a spirit tube 6, by which that section of the rule may be used as a level; and in the leg section 0 is set a spirit tube f, by which that section of the rule may be used as a plumb. Each of the spirit tubes is set in an opening formed greater part exposed to view for the purpose specified.
On the side face of the plate 9 are marked angle lines 1'7, and on one of the engaging plates 6 and part of the tongue of ti o male section of the hinge, are corresponding angle lines 18. lhe lines are for the purpose of indicating the necessary adjustment of the hinge to be arranged to provide a bevelsquare or inclinometer, and also to indicate the angle of the bevel formed by the edges of the two halves of the rule from the hinge.
Formed in one of the side faces of the plate 6, is a groove 19, Fig. 1 and slidahly contained in the groove is a locking plate 20; and formed in the side face of the plate 8 and engaging with the plate 6. is a notch 21. Formed in the front face of the sliding plate 20, is a finger grip 22, by which they plate may be moved in and out of engagement with the notch 21.
To adjust the parts to provide a right angle try-square the legs I) and c are placed at, right angles, which brings the notch 9'1 into alinemcnt with the slide 20. when thev slide may he forced into the notch and loch the hinge in position, and prevent further adpistment until the slide is drawn out again. To adjust the parts to he used a hevel-squarc, the slide may be withdrawn from the notch, when the hinge hecom es tree to adjust to any angledesired. ent angles may he had by turning the hinge until the degrees marked on the female section 2 are brought opposite the desired degrees marked on the male section 1, when the desired angle may he had along the edges of the leg sections 7) and (r.
' Formed by a shoulder 23 Fig. in the leg section 2'), and the side plates 8 and 9. is a pocket 24, in which the tongue 8 of the male section engages when the hinge is extended. By the engagement at the tongue 3 in the pocltet 244 a true alinement is efiected hetvvecn the two halves, and the hinge is also prevented from being extended backward farther than intended.
.25 designates a fiat spring interposed between the plate ZO'and the bottom of the groove 19, and is for the purpose of providing tension to prevent the plate 21 from hecoming misplaced.
All of the diflerent parts comprising the The dit't'er- I hinge sections may be fastened to the re spective leg sections by fastening pins or rivets.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is':-
IVA combination tool comprising a series of hinged leg sections, gradu'ations marked along the entire edges of said leg sections, a spirit tube arranged at right angles with the edges in one of the said leg sections, and a spirit tube arranged in parallel relation with the edges in another of the said leg see tions, a locking hinge pining two of the said leg sections together, said locking hinge comprising a pivot plate fastened to one of the said leg sections and journal plates fasleg sections togetherfsaidlocking hinge consisting of a pivot plate fastened to the end ot one of said leg sections. curvilinear flanges and grooves formed on the side face of said pivot plate. journal plates fastened to the side faces. of the adjoining leg sections, interlocking flanges and grooves formed in the adjacent side face of one of said journal plates, said pivot plate adapted to tnrnin between said journal plates. a notch formed in the edge of one of said journal plates, a sliding plate in the ad oining side face o-t said pivot plate, said sliding plate adapted to engage in said notch and fasten said parts at right angles, to one another, substantially as described. a Signed at liaslo, B. (3., this fifth day of April 1907.
