Description

A. L. JOBES.
CUFF FORMING PRESS. APPLIOATION rum) MAY 4, 1909.

WITNESSES INVENTOR.
Q flBRfl/w L .Jomss 7 ATTYi m-QJ ABRAM L. JOIBES, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
CUFF-FORMING PRESS.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ABRAM L. Jonns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Leominster, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Forming Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to laundrying machines and particularly to a press for finishing cuffs and shaping them to obviate creases which might otherwise impair the fabric thereof.
An object of this invention is to provide a press having a heated head of novel contour into contact with which the cuff is pressed through the medium of a presser head shaped to a contour corresponding with that of the first mentioned head, novel means being provided for operating the presser head for the purpose of pressing the cuff into engagement with the head proper.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel lever mechanism by which the presser head is reciprocated, the relation of parts being such that the levers for operating the presser head will automatically lock the presser head in operative engagement with head proper.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a machine embodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a front view thereof; Fig. 8 illustrates a side elevation of a fragment of the machine shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 1 illustrates a top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1 with the spring and connection thereof for elevating the presser head omitted; and Fig. 5 illustrates a perspective view of a cuff after it has been acted on by the machine.
In these drawings, 6 denotes a base and 7 a frame connected to the base, the said frame having a standard 8 rising therefrom and terminating in a guide 9. A sliding block 10 is movable in the guide 9, and the lower end of the sliding block is provided with a presser head 11, the operating face Specification of Letters Patent.

of which is the shape of an inverted V, the angle of which is more acute near the front than its rear edge. The upper end of the sliding block is provided with an eye 14, to which a spring 16 is attached, the upper end of said spring being connected to an arm 17 which rises from the standard 8.
The handle and oscillating member as shown in the drawing are integral and are mounted on a shaft 22, secured to the frame.
Pivoted to the frame at 13 is a lever 12 havinga bifurcation in one end, which engages a pin 10 in the block 10 for reciprocating said block. Said lever 12 is pivotally connected at 18 with a threaded member 18, engaging a nut 19, and said nut is pivotally connected at 20 to said member 20; and it is clearly shown, from an observation of Fig. 1, that by manipulating the lever 21, the block 10 and presser head 11 will be lowered and raised.
As shown in Fig. 3, when the presser head is in engagement with the head proper, the axis of the pivotal connection between the nut and the oscillating member 20, has passed the plane of the axes of the oscillating member and the screw 18, and the parts cannot unlock or move from the position illustrated in Fig. 3, until the handle 21, is operated to cause the axis of the pivot between the nut and the oscillating member 20 to repass the plane of the axes of the oscillating member, and the screw 18.
The frame 7 has a hollow head 23, with a supply pipe 2 1, and a discharge pipe 25, to permit the circulation of the heating medium such as steam or hot water and when the head is heated through the agency just mentioned, the fabric or cuff interposed between the head 28, and the presser head 11, will be acted on and pressed to the configuration of the cuff shown in Fig. 5, for it is well shown in the drawing that the upper surface of the head 23 corresponds in shape to the contour of the presser head.
As shown in the drawing, the upper edge of the head near the rear is oval and the angle of the inclined surfaces of the head is more acute near the front of the head than it is toward the rear. By this relation of parts, the front edge of the cuff is rounded, whereas the cuff near the rear edge where it is connected to the sleeve is angular, but not sufficiently angular as to injure the fabric when the cuff is shaped.
I claim- 1. In a laundrying machine, a frame, a standard thereon having a guide, a block slidable on the standard, a presser head on the block, a pin in the block, the said presser head having an under surface approximately the shape of an inverted V, the angle of which is more acute near the front edge than at its rear, a head having its upper surface corresponding in contour to the surface of the presser head, means for heating the head, means for holding the presser head out of engagement with said head, a lever pivoted on the standard, one end thereof engaging the pin in said block, a handle pivoted on the frame, and means connecting the handle to the lever whereby when the handle is operated the presser head is forced downwardly and locked in engagement with the said head.
2. In a laundrying machine, a frame, a standard thereon having a guide, a lever pivoted on the standard, a block slidable on the standard, a presser head on the block operated by the lever, the said presser head having an under surface approximately the shape of an inverted V, the angle of which is more acute near the front edge than at its rear, a head having its upper surface corresponding in contour to the under surface of the presser head, means for heating the head, means for operating the lever, an arm projecting upwardly from the'standard, and a spring connecting the arm and block.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
