cooking-stove or range, which may be of the JOHN F. HEISTER, OF GENEVA, NET/V YORK, ASSIGNOR TO PHILLIPS & CLARK STOVE COMPANY, OF GENEVA,
NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
COOKING-STOVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. Hnis'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at, Geneva, county of Ontario, and State of E New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CookingStoves, of t which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of a front corner of a cooking-stove or range embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation of the pendulons pawl detached. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the fixed stove-top.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and etlicient means for automatically supporting, when raised, the lifting-top section of a cooking-stove or range, and permitting the lifting-top to be lowered from its fully raised position without manipulation of such supporting means.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, repre sents the body and, 2, the fixed top of a ordinary type. The fixed top has a front overhang at, 3, and is provided with an aperture, 4, adapted to be closed and covered by the pivoted top-section, 5, adapted to swing in a vertical plane upon an axis at 6. A forward extension, 7, of said pivoted topsection occupies a groove, 8, and covers an aperture, 9, in the overhang, 3, of the fixed to fv founted upon the front of the stove-body is a bracket, 10, adapted to support the overhang, 8, of the fixed top, said bracket being located adjacent to the inner side of the opening 9. Upon the side of the bracket adjacent to the opening, 9, is a rib, 11, preferably cast integral therewith, and having on its upper end one or more forwardly projecting teeth, 12, as shown in Fig. 2.
Specification of Letters Patent.
A pendulous pawl, 13, is carried by the top-section 5, being pivotally connected Patented Mar. *7, 1911.
1909. Serial No. 481,643.
therewith at 1 1, which pawl is provided with an offset or projection, 15, adapted to engage the rib 11 and the teeth, 12, thereon as the movable top-section 5 is raised. The rib 11 extends across the path which the pawl projection of the pawl tends to traverse when the top-section is fully raised, and the ends of said rib 11 are preferably equidistant from the axis of the movable top-section, said rib extending obliquely upwardly and outwardly. Said rib terminates at its upper end outside the arc of oscillation of the pawl-projection 15 when the top-section is fully raised, thus permitting the pawl to swing by gravity toward the axis of the movable top-section, thereby causing the pawl-projection 15 to travel down back of the rib 11 when the top-section is thereafter lowered. The rib terminates at its lower end within the arc of oscillation of said pawl-projection 15 when the top-section is fully lowered, thus permitting the pawl to swing by gravity away from the axis of the movable top-section, thereby causing the pawl-projection 15 to travel upward in front of the rib 11 when the top-section is thereafter raised. The top-section can thus be raised and supported with the pawl-projection in engagement with either of the teeth, 12, and when it is desired to lower the top-section, it is necessary only to first raise it until the pawl 13 is free to swing clear of the upper end of the rib 11 and to then lower the top-section to the plane of the fixed stovetop, no manipulation of the pawl being necessary to accomplish this result.
The pawl, 13, may be provided with a projection, 16, adapted to engage the underside of the fixed top, 2, at one side of the opening, 9, to limit the upward movement of the movable top-section. Either, or both, of the projections, 15 and 16, can be thus made to engage the underside of the fixed top, and serve as a stop.
While I have described the bracket, 10, as adapted to engage and support the overhang of the fixed top, I do not wish to be limited to this function of the bracket, as, for certain purposes of the invention, said bracket may be any known means for supporting in proper position the rib 11.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.-
1. In a cooking-stove or range, the combination With the body; a fixed top having a front overhang provided with an opening; and a movable top-section pivoted upon an axis extending transversely of the stove; of a pawl pendulous, through the opening in said overhang, from said pivoted top-section on an axis parallel with the axis thereof, and having a tooth-engaging projection; a bracket on the front of the stove-body adapted to support said overhang; and a rib on said bracket having a pawl-engaging tooth.
2. In a cooking-stove or range, the combination with the body; a fixed top having an overhang provided with an opening; a
pivotally movable top-section; a rib having a pawl-engaging tooth beneath said overhang; and a pawl pendulous, through the opening in said overhang, from said topsection, said pawl being adapted to engage said tooth, and having a projection adapted to engage the underside of said overhang to limit the upward movement of said movable top-section.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of February, 1909. JOHN F. HEISTER. Witnesses H. M. MILLER, S. H. MERRILL.
