PAPER-ROLL HOLDER AND CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND P. HEN- DRIGKSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Long Branch, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Paper- Roll Holder and Cutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to paper roll holders and cutters, for use with rolls of paper or other material which is used in pieces severed from the rolls, and has reference more particularly to a device of this class comprising supports, for supporting the roll of paper or other material, a blade adapted to be positioned against the roll, and serving for severing therefrom pieces of different lengths, and means for movably supporting the blade so that its angularity relative to the horizontal is constant, irrespective of the thickness of the roll.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and durable holder and cutter for rolls of paper or the like, by means of which the roll can be rot-atably supported, which serves for severing from the roll pieces of different lengths, as they are required for use, and in" which the blade or knife against an edge of which the paper is severed, is movably mounted so that it maintains a constant angle with the horizontal, regardless of the thickness of the roll, whereby it is possible to sever pieces from the roll with equal facility at all times.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erence indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the device; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse section, showing a detail of modified form.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that while the device is particularly useful in connection with rolls of paper used for wrapping parcels, in shops, and for other purposes, it can also be advantageously employed in connection with rolls of other material which can be Specification of Letters Patent.

severed into pieces of different lengths, by engagement with the edge of a cutter or blade. I support the blade by means of links or hangers arranged in pairs, and effecting a parallel motion of the blade, so that its angularity with respect to the horizontal plane is at all times the same. It will be readily seen that without the provision of such supporting means the blade will be positioned against the roll at different angles with the horizontal, depending upon the thickness of the roll, and that consequently the efficiency of the blade as a cutter will vary in accordance. If so desired, a spring may be employed for holding the blade firmly against the roll, though this may be unnecessary if the blade itself is of sufficient weight to enable it to maintain an operative position gravitationally. Certain of the details of construction form no part of this invention, and can be varied in accordance with individual preference and special conditions, without departing from the underlying spirit of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown, for example, a base 10 having near the ends, supports 11, provided with laterally disposed feet 12 secured to the base by means of bolts or screws 13. The supports have intermediate their ends, bearing openings 14: in which is j ournaled a shaft or spindle 15 upon which the roll 16 of paper or other material is wound. The supports, at their upper ends are connected by a cross bar or top 17.
The hangers are arranged in pairs, each pair depending from one of the blocks. They are preferably curved, as is shown, to prevent the possibility of their interfering with the roll. I employ a blade 21 of any suitable form, having a cutting edge 22 adapted to be positioned against the roll. The blade has transverse lugs or extensions 23 at the back thereof. The lower ends of the pairs of links are secured by means of pins or bolts 24, to the extensions 23. The pairs of links insure the parallel motion of the blade, so that it engages with the roll at the edge 22, at a constant angle. It will be understood that the pieces are severed from the roll in the usual manner, by tearing off the material along the cutting edge 22 of the blade.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of the device, in Which are employed suitable springs 25 secured under the top 17 and engaging certain of the links 19 to force the blade firmly against the roll.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described, GOITIT prising supports having a cross bar, said supports having means for journaling a roll of paper under said cross bar, blocks secured under said top, a blade having extensions at the back thereof, and pairs of pivoted links connecting each of said extensions and one of said blocks to hold said blade movably adjacent to the roll.
prising supports having a cross bar, said supports having means for ournaling a roll of paper under said cross bar, blocks secured under said top, a blade having extensions at the back thereof, pairs of pivoted links connecting each of said extensions and one of said blocks to hold said blade movably adjacent to the roll, springs secured to said top and each engaging one of said links, said springs tending tohold said blade against the roll, said links being curved.
