To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES MAGLIJNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raleigh, in the county of IVake and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning the Threads of Stuffing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference' being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to adevice for cleaning the threads of stuffing boxes and the like, and has for its primary object the provision of a device of the character stated which will be of simple construction, readily applied in operative association with the part to be treated, and capable of easy and efiicient operation.

The invention C QIHPLQlIGIIClS a tool provided with instrumentalities for scraping and cleaning the threads of a stuffing box as above mentioned, said tool being formed to be applied to the threads and manipulated with reference to the latter without necessitating the taking down of the parts of the pump or other apparatus being treated.

In keeping with the last stated advantageous feature of a construction made in keeping with the present invention the tool comprises separable members adapted to receive and be closed upon a stuffing box and to surround the piston rod, for example, and means for fastening the parts together to enable the tool being fed back and forth in the threads of the stufiing box and longitudinally of the piston rod. Another characteristic feature of the in vention inherent in a preferred embodiment of the same is the formation, in a single member of the tool, of a threadengaging portion and an operating handle engaging portion formed on different surfaces respectively of said member.

All of the foregoing together with other features of the construction and operation of my tool will be apparent from the specific description hereinafter contained when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and wherein a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

Referring more specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views A A designate opposite halves or approximately semi-circular members of a substantially circular die having flat edges a adapted to abut when closed together. The inner surfaces of these members are formed with axially disposed lugs B the same being of substantial width and the inner surfaces of which are curved and provided with inclined teeth I) in accordance with the pitch of the thread for the treatment of which any particular die may be provided. The outer end of the die members are provided with inwardly extending flanges C forming together a central circular bearing 0 for the piston rod. The die members are exteriorly formed to conjointly provide a peripheral groove D for the reception of a split ring, clamp or collar comprising the two members E E pivoted together as at e and removably secured in place,to in turn fasten the die around the stuffing box, in engagement with the threads thereof, through the medium of perforated ears e one of which isthreaded, and a clamping bolt (2" engaging therewith. It will be noted that the groove D and clamping ring are disposed approximately midway of the length of the lugs B to prevent any tilting tendency of the lugs as might occur should the clamp engage the die nearer either end of the lugs. This engagement obviously obtains a better fitting and uniform bite ofthe teeth of the lugs in the threads being treated.

Around the periphery of the die above the clamping ring and adjacent to the end of the device which carries the flanges C, I provide a series of notches F for engagement of a spanner wrench to turn the cleaning tool onto and 0d of the threads during the treating operation of the stufiing box.

The foregoing being the structural characteristics of my device, the operation will probably be obvious but it may be here 011- served that when it is desired to scrape and clean out the threads of an impaired stuffing box or the like, it is simply necessary to unscrew the gland from the box, slip it over the piston rod awav from the box, and bring the two halves of the cleaning die and ring together around the piston rod and 1n engagement with the threads to be cleaned,

clamping the parts together as hercinbefore described. The tool may then be screwed up and down the threads to clean out the same by the employment of a spanner wrench as statedor through the medium of other instrumentalities. By having the notched portions for engagement of the spanner wrench opposite the guide flanges; C which slide over'the piston rod, abundant metal is provided at this point to afford a firm durable structure capable of resisting the strains of the wrench, and as previously suggested the toothed lugs areheld in firm ,engagement with the threads being treated;

and the tool reinforced at this particular portion thereof by means of the clamping ring. 1

/ While I have herein disclosed one embodiment of the invention it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention is capable of embodiment in forms and devices other than that set forth and described.

- I claim:

1. A device of the character, described comprising av separable tool adapted'to clean threads comprising toothed engaging portions, a hearing adapted to engage a piston rod, means adapted to be engaged bya Wrench adjoiningsaid bearing, and separable means surrounding the thread engag- ,--ing portions to reinforce the same adapted to hold the parts of the tool together.

A device of the character described i i g aseparable tool adapted to clean threads comprising toothed engaging portions, an inwardly projecting portion formed toreceivea piston rod, means adjoining said portion adapted to be engaged to turn the device,- and means surrounding the thread engaging portions to reinforce the same adapted to hold the parts'of the tool together. 8. A device of the character. described comprising a separable tool adapted to clean threads comprising toothed engaging portions, means surrounding said thread engaging portions to reinforce the same adapted 'to hold the parts of the tool together, a

threads comprising toothed engaging portions having an annular grooved portion, means for securing the parts together fitting said grooved portion, and means for turn-' ing the device.
