Be it known that we, AroL's'rL's A. \VEST and 'iLLIAM H. GATCIIELL, citizens of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, and at Rutledge. in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Hair-Curlers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hair curlers and is designed particularly as an improvement over the patent granted to E. D. Payne at (11., No. 861-179, granted July 30, 1907.

It contemplates the construction of a hair curler wherein gum water may be injected intothe hair through the instrumentality of the curler. l urthermore. the hair may be thoroughly ,dried when so desired by the peculiar construction of the curler admitting of a thorough ventilation of the hair.

lVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction. combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described. claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view curler constructed in accordance with of a hair the present invention, illustrating the same open and ready to receive the hair; Fig. 2 is a side elevation illustrating the hair curler in use Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the tubular member with the spring clamp in section. illustrating the engagement of' the spring clamp by the tubular member; Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4 -4 of Fig. 2.

The present invention resides in the provision of a tubular member about which the hair is adapted to be wound, said tubular member being provided with a plurality of openings through which air passes and .retains .the hair in a thoroughly ventilated condition. If so desired gum water may be forced through the tubular member and the openings piercing the same to the hair in order that the hairmay retain the curl imparted thereto by the present invention. Another way of injecting gum water into the hair is by placing absorbent cotton within the tubular member which will also keep the hair moist with gum water.

A spring member is pivoted in one terminal of the tubular member through the Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings. 1 indicates a tubular member pierced throughout its entire surface and at various intervals by the openings 2. One terminal of the tubular member is bifurcated forming the arms 3 and 3. one of said arms adapted to engage the free terminal of the spring clamping member 4 as hereinafter more fully described. The opposite terminal of .the tubular member is provided with av depression or recess 5 which permits the spring clamping member to be swung straightor in the same plane with the tubular member to permit the hair to be wound about said tubular member.

A ball 6 is'pivoted in the tubular member adjacent to the depression or recess 5 and projects partially from said tubular memher, said ball being constructed of any suitthe terminal of the spring clamping member 4 secured therein in any suitable manner.

The spring clamping member 4 is provided with an outwardly formed bend 7 adjacent to the ball 6, said bend being so located thatthe spring clamping member 4 will more readily curve to accommodate the coil of hair wound about the tubular memher 1. The free terminal of the spring is bent upon itself to form the book 8 which engages the arm 3 formedby the bifurcation in the tubular member 1.

From this construction it will readily be seen that when a coil of hair is wound about the tubular member 1. the spring clamping member 4 will be arched and thereby draw the hook 8 into the concaved portion of the arm 3, thus securely locking the free end of the spring and the tubular member into engagement. This construction retains the hair firmly upon the curler until it. is desired to remove the same at which time the pressure is applied upon the spring arm permitting the hook 8 to be released from the concaved portion of the arm 3.

Should it be desired to use heat in the, curling of the hair, a heated wire or similar implement may be inserted into the tubular able materi 1, preferably of lead and hasmember, allowing the heat to circulate through the openings 2 to the hair wound about the tubular member. In this manner all danger of burning the hair and damaging the hair is eliminated.

It will be understood that by the provision of a recess or depression 5 in the tubular member 1 adjacent the ball '6, the spring member 4 may be swung into the same plane with the tubular member 1 when itis. desired to remove the hair, thereby ,eliminating damaging the curl inwany way by the removal.

Having thus fully described our invention, what is claimed as new is:

In a hair curler, a tubular member having one extremity thereof bifurcated and a recess at the opposite extremity thereof, said tubular member being pierced by a plurality of openings, a ballpii oted in the terminal member adjacent said ball, and a hook formed at the free terminal of said clamp-- ing member adapted to extend beyond the extremity of said tubular member and engage the interior of one of the arms formed by said-bifurcation when the device is in operation.
