Be it known that I, Jaoor. llievnns, citizen of the United States. residing at Portland, in the county ot Ionia and. State ol Michigan. have invented certain new and uselful .Improvements in l lnvelop-t)peners, of which the following a. speeitieatim'i.
My invention has to do with stationery and more particularly to the opening oi envelops and the like; and it seeks the provision of a simple, compact and inexpensive device through the medium of which eu velops and analogous devices may be expeditiously and easily opened, and by a cut. extending at an even distance throughout from the edge oi. the envelop so as to preclude injury to the contents thereol'.
lVith the foregoing in view. the invention will be fully understood from the 'lollowing description and claim when the same are read in connection with the t lrawings, accompanying and forming part (it this specification, in which:

Referring by letter to the said drawings and more particularly to l igs. l to 3 thereof: A is the base or body of the device. which device as a. whole is made ot one or more metals suitable to the purpose of the invention. Formed integral with one end of the said base or body A and overhanging the same is a resilient arm B. on the forward portion of the inner edge oil? which is a cutting' blade and in the forward end of which is a notch 1 On the base or body A is fixed a channel-guide E, and from the for- Ward end of the side Wall of said guide rises a curved arm F which is disposed in the notch D of the resilient arm 13 and terminatles at its upper end in an enlargement or stop (it, the purpose of which is to limit the upward movement of the overhanging arm ll.
In the practical use of the device the same is positioned so that; the edge of an envelop is received in the clnin'nel-guide 1C. and then dt'iwnward prcssurc is exerted on the resilient arm ll to put the cutting blade C in working position. al'lcr which the device is drawn along the edge of the envelop. when as will be readily understood the cutting blade will cut and open the envelop; and it will also be observed that by virtue of the ehannel-guide receiving the edge of the en whip the cut will be made at an even distance throiurhout from the edge of the envelop with the result that the contents of the envelop will be preserved against iiljury.

l laving described my invention. what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ..'\n envelop opener. comprising a base and an upstanding channel guide wall. a yielding arm overhanging; the base and having a cutting blade extending toward said base, and a curved stop arm extending upwardly from the guide wall and engaging over the arm to limit its movement away from the base.
