Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GRAY, of Mianus, F airfield county, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Gas Producer Heads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the construction of the heads of gas producers, particularly of updraft suction producers designed for marine purposes.
The object of the invention is to construct a cast metal head for such producers in which a body of water may be maintained for the production of vapor forming part of the draft current and to so arrange the parts of such head that the rolling and pitching of the vessel in a seaway will not cause the water to splash in such a way as to interfere with the proper operation of the producer.
A further object is so to arrange the head that poke holes and air admission openings may be provided for notwithstanding the water in the head and in such a manner that the head will be strengthened rather than weakened by the openings.
Still a further purpose of the invention is to provide a maximum heating surface in the head whereby its evaporating capacity is increased and to insure an equal distribution of the expansion and contraction strains, thereby avoiding the danger of cracking or breakage from change in temperatures.
My invention has other features of im portance, and all will be fully set forth hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is now had to the accompany ing drawings which represent as an example the preferred embodiment of my invention and in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the head showing its relation to the body of the producer, the charging hopper and the draft current pipe: Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the line 8-3 of Fig. 1.
My improved head is mounted in the usual position; to wit. on top of the body 10 of the producer; and it comprises a plane, horizontal top wall 11, a perpendicular side wall 12 of cross sectional form corresponding to that of the producer body (here shown as cylindrical) and a bottom wall, exposed to the heat in the producer body, which bottom wall comprises annular horizontal outer and inner sections 14- and 15, the latter lower than the former and the two sections connected by an annular updent or inverted channel 16.
Passing vertically through the head and intersecting the channel 16 are walls forming the gas outlet passage 17 with which the gas pipe 18 communicates. At a point, preferably opposite the passage 17, is an opening 19 in the top wall through which the elbow 20 of the draft current pipe 21 communicates with the interior of the head.
22 indicates annular walls passing centrally through the head within the section 15 of the bottom wall and forming a downwardly flaring charging passage with which the charging valve or hopper 23 communicates.
At the side of the producer head adjacent the gas outlet pipe 18 are openings 24 through which air is supplied to the interior of the head where it mingles with the vapor therein. the mixture forming the draft current and being drawn off to the grate through the elbow 20 and pipe 21.
At preferably four equidistant points around the producer head and immediately over the channel 16 of the bottom wall are formed walls 25 which extend from the top wall 11 downward to the channel 16 of the bottom wall and form downwardly flaring passages through the head constituting the poke holes thereof. These are normally closed by the plugs 26. Joined to these walls 25 and extending vertically and radially from said walls outward to the wall 12 and inward to the walls 22 are combined bracing and baffling walls 27 and 28, which extend from the bottom wall, wherever they contact therewith, upward to a point near the top wall, but do not reach the same so that they leave a clear-way around the entire head through which the air and vapor may circulate to the opening 19. Preferably said battles 27 and 28 are formed with openings 29 near their lower edges through which the water may circulate and by which the level of the water in the head is maintained uniform.

According to my invention I prefer to cast the above-described portions of the head integral. The large heating surface afforded by the peculiar form of the bottom and the passage Walls 17, 22 and 25 insures a rapid and sustained vaporization of the water, while the walls 27 and 28 prevent splashing of the water due to motion of the vessel in which the producer is installed. Notwithstanding this the vapor and air are free to circulate in the upper part of the head and are fully subject to the suction through the opening 19. Further the walls 27 and 28 exert a great bracing effect strengthening not only the poke hole walls 25, but the inverted channel 16 and the walls 12 and 22 against each other. Thus the whole structure is formed to resist the strains which in operation it must endure and effectually to serve every necessary function.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States is:
1. A water chambered gas producer head, the bottom wall whereof has an inverted channel therein and walls extending through the head and intersecting the said channel, such walls forming a poke hole.
2. A water chambered gas producer head, the bottom wall whereof has an inverted channel therein and walls extending through the head and intersecting the said channel, such walls forming a poke hole and a vertical brace wall joined to the poke hole walls and to a part of the head.

A water chambered gas producer head, vertical centrally located walls forming a passage extending through the head, walls extending through the head, such last-mentioned walls forming a poke hole and vertical brace walls oined to the inner and outer sides of the poke hole walls and to the walls forming the central passage and to the outer walls of the head.
8. A water chambered gas producer head,-
walls extending through the head, such walls forming a poke hole and a Vertical brace wall joined to the poke hole walls and to a part of the head, said walls being spaced from the top wall of the head, for the pur pose specified.
