Description

' NITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
IM PROVED ROAD-SCRAPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 98,417, dated December 28, 1869.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. REX, of Butler, in the county of De Kalb, and in the Stateof Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a roadscraper,77 as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a rear View.
A A represent the two sides of the scraper, the rear ends of which form the handles B B. C is the back of the scraper, secured to and connecting the sides A A. The bottom D, which is curved, as shown in Fig. 1, is pivoted in its center to the lower edges of the sides A A, in front of the back C, so as to'close up the space between said sides in front of the back, but at the same time allow it to revolve freely on its pivots or journals. On the rear side of the back Gis secured a spring, a, which extends underneath and in front of the back, so as to form a support for the rear edge of the bottom D, preventing the bottom from rethe ends of said bar projecting through holes in the back and extending above the rear edge i of the bottom D. The ends of the bar b are held in this position by two springs,e e, placed one above each of the pins d d.
When the scraper is full and it is desired to vempty the same, it is only necessary to press the bent bar b forward, when its ends withdraw at Vonce from the bottom and allow the same to revolve.
I am aware of the patent issued to S. Alderman, dated March 30, 1869, and desire to make no claim to the devices therein patented to him. My invention diers from the above in construction and in being more simplified.
What I claim is- In combination with the boX A and revolving bottom D, the vertically-placed bail vb, made L-shaped at the bottom and pivored to the horizontal pins d d, upon which rest the springs e e to control the bail b, all substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of June, 1869.
y GEO'. N. REX.
