h I .431 concern:
B it know that l, CHARLES W. Haunts,
uty of .I lcw London and State or t onneetu-ut, hare invented ce tain new and useful Improvements in AutomobilQIJfllllIl of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing My invention relates to improvements in hi1 L and particularly to improvements in lain} adapterl'for use upon road vehicles,
s,- in
all; as automobiles; and an object of my relation is; to provide a lamp which will be simple in construction, relatircly cheap in construction and cllicient in use. other object of my invention is to provide a lamp of the class described which may readily repaired 2nd cost of upkeep of which will prove small.
In the drawings illustrating my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 is a side eleval'iomof my new lamp; Fig. 2 1s a plan, part of the cover being shown broken away to show the interior; Fig. 3 is a section on the line A-A of Fig. 2; and 51- is a detail of the number-plate. I
lit the top Land the bottom 6 there are formed parallel with and at a short, distance from the frontcdge-oi' each a shallow groove and parallel with and at a short distance from the lateral edges oi each, shallow "tomes (Z, d. the grooves 0 there is hired a piece of e wliieh may be uniYOlOlGtl; in the 'rooves a there is fitted a pane of glass which may be, tailored, as red and in the ooves d there is fitted a. third pane of gla g which may be colored, as bhie. A number phie it is formed of a, single sheet olf metal 1" other suitable mal in Xvi; h are termed as by stampin; figures and letter indicating the ion or license numb r of the we in the crime portions oi this number- L it are cut shaped notches and are 'i'illlfletl the holes The lateral sections Zr of the plate 72- are bent at right angles to the middle section 111 and the edge por-' tions are bent at 3'lgl)l'-an;fles lo the main body-portion ot the plate, to term lluilgtff-i. The numinim-plate thus bent is'i ilaced. hes tween the cores or top and i ie holloni 7.: of the casing oi the lamp and is ctr-11rd in c 'itizen of linited States, residing at- .the top or cover andt-he bottom into the holes j. The back I. of the casing of the lamp is formedwith grooves (Z in which engage the rear cdges of the lateral or side panes of colored glass f, g and which is formed with a centrally-disposed hole p through which projects the base-plug end of a glow lamp 9. The cover a. and the bottom 7) are each formed on its inner face with a recess 1* shaped to receive a part of the bulb of theglow lamp g and the latter is thus held in place firmly. Screwed upon the base plug end of the glowdamp q is a socket s which :arries the electric wires 1 which c0ndurt the current to and from the glow lamp. socket s and the base-plug of-the lamp r is shielded from the'eleinents (snow, rain, etc.)
by the walls '11 and lid '1) of a box-like compartnient 11' provided at theback of the casing". The lid '0 -arries the hump-sockets which is mounted in a central hole 1) free to be turned, so as to screw upon'the baseplug of the lamp. x
The number-plate, being mounted at a distance from the panes of glass, is brought out into bold relief, when theglowdampq is lit: and this number plate further serves as a screen to guard the panes of glass from ln'eakage. Should the panes of glass become broken. they are readily replaced by simply removing the cover. .Vhere uncolored glass is used, the number opposed to itwill preferably be painted or otherwise colored black; while opposite the colorcd glass panes the sections of the number-plate will be preferably painted white.
