Description

E, WATERS.
INDICATOR.
APPLIOATION FILED MAR. 20, 1913.
Patented Aug. 19, 1913 QM o $4M" day time as well as at Application filed March 26, 1913.
To all whom, it may; concern.
Be it known that l, EDWIN l ihvrnss, a citizen of the United States, residing a" Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented cert-sin new and nscfnl Improvements in Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
The indicetor which is the subject of the present invention'is designed to be used on automobiles or other vehicles for, the purpose of indicating the direction the driver is going to turn, and the object of the in.- vention is to provide an indicator of this kind which. will he plainly visible in the night, and which can be readily set by the driver.- These objects are attained by means of a novel comhinw tion and arrangement otter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing iorniiing a. part of this specification, Figure l is an elevetion. of an automobile equipped with my improved indicator. 2 is a, sectional view of the lamp provided with the indicetor. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the lamp with the indicator shown in cross section. Fig. l is a plan view of the gearing for operating the lamp.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the automobile or other vehicle to which the invention is applied. The indicator is an arrow, 2. hand or other pointer arranged horizontally and adapted to he swung about a vertical axis to indicate horizontal direction. The po-interis .a metal frame 6 defining its outline and glazed on both sides, the glass 7 being suitably secured in the frame. Thus ehollow glass pointer is had, the purpose of which structure will. he presently described.
The pointer is carried. loy lamp oil ordieonstruction having 2. rectangular casnary ing 8. One of the'feces of the lamp -'cesing carries a white glass 9., and the oppositejsce has :2. green glass 10. The two other oposite feces provided with -jlsssesll. This color errengement may he varied eccordin to the trellis regulation which may he in orce in. the city or other niece where the vehicle is in use. The p ain iscerried by the leinprweing st thetego of parts to be heiein-- projects from opposite sides, in which letter are openings. The pointer is in two sections, one of which enters the lamp casing through one of the openin s, and the other section through the opening in the opposite side. A strip 12 secured to the top of the lamp cssing and extending across the same, has spring" fingers 13 at its ends which grip the respective sections of the pointer. Thus, the pointer is securely fastened to the lamp cesing. An oil, or elcctr employed as the illuminant.
lo. the hose of the lamp casing 8 is o-socliet into which extends/the upper end cl? ver tical shaft it, end by means of a. set screw it, the lamp casing med-e fest to the shaft. A hearing; stood 15 supports the shaft, sziid stand being mounted on any con.- vcniont portion oi".
the vehicle body to locate @111 the shaft 14.- is fast it pinion 16 which is in mesh with a ll having 21. lever erni 1.8, which 's connected h v 1. link 19 to e. hand lever 90 fnlcrurnec to a stand Bil. mounted on the vehicle body, so that the hsnd lever is Within easy reach of the driver. The hand lever lies asuitzihle loci; The shaft 14 is tubular so that the current wires for an electric lamp may he run thereth ongh, if the casing is to he provided with such. lamp.
The device herein described will he mount ed in front of the vehicle to indicate to drivers of approaching vehicles, pedestrians and others, the direction. the driver int DClS to turn the vehicle, the pointer heing set by means of the hand lever 20 to indicate the direction. Upon operetingthe hand lever, the lamp casing; 8 is rotated end as the pointer is carried by said casing, it swings eronnd therewith. device may also be mounted at the rear end of vehicle, so that the. driver of. e. vehicle behind me he notified the course the vehicle in front is going to belie.
its the pointer is hollow end nisl'lo of gloss, it will he. nineteo ot night lamp, emit it thus rendered plainly visible. in order to o hence. the
