To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G-nonon lViLLrAir Bisorror, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Mallala, Frankston, in the county of Mornington, State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, farmer, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Music or Like Leaf Turner, of which the following is a specifieation.
This invention relates to apparatus adapted to automatically overturn music or the like, sheet by sheet. In the past many devices have been proposed to attain this end but with this invention an inexpensive and convenient appliance is produced which is positive, yet simple, in its instantaneous action, is not liable to derangement and may be operated by the foot, hand, knee or in any manner desired according to the circumstances surrounding its use. It is attachable to instruments such as a piano or an organ or to orchestral and like music stands and accommodates leaves or sheets of varying lengths and widths. But in order that this invention may be better understood reference will now be made to the accompanying sheet of drawings which illustrate an embodiment found to operate in an eminently satisfactory manner in practice, and in which similar numerals of reference designate corresponding or like parts where they occur in the several views Figure 1 is a detached detail view of a framework forming part of an actuating mechanism. This invention includes a music rest comprising a support 2 (Fig. 9) above which is a series of links 3 pivoted by pivot pins 1 upon the lazy tongs principle in order that the rest may be adjusted to sheets of vary ing lengths. The upper links are pivoted to a top piece having thereon two or more stationary holding clips. Each holding cli p has (Fig. 8) two side lugs 6 projecting forwardly from a depending back nember 7 which penetrates through the support 5 and iasses upwardly forming a front and spring member 8. Influenced by the spring member isa holding finger piece 9 having trunnions 10 by which it is retained between the lugs (3.
Secured to a flange or the like of the top piece 5 is an actuating mechanism turning each leaf of music or the like independently. This mechanism has (Fig. 1) a framework with a base plate 11 behind which is an up ward and slightly inclined back piece 12 having at each of its sides two or more attachment lugs 13. From the back piece 12 protrudes a pulley block 1 1 within which is a pulley wheel 15. Behind the pulley block 1 1 and through the back piece 12 is a cord hole 16. Extending forwardly above the inclined back piece 12 is a bracket 17 between which. and the base plate 11 upstands a vertical guide pin and stop 18. At or near the center of the base plate a main vertical pivot pin 19 having a fixed washer 20 thereon.
Loosely turning around the main vertical pivot pin 19 are a plurality of two part leaf turning arms. These consist (Fig. '7) of a number of superimposed flat horizontal back ends 21 between each of which is a loose friction washer 22. From the front of each independent end 21 npstands a vertical portion 23 through which passes a pivot pin 24; and below the front end of which is a stop and rest 25. By each pivot pin Qt is a pivoted front piece 26 the rear end of which is cut away at 2T. l'pon the front end of each pivoted front piece is a stop 28. Sliding. to secure sheets of varying widths. upon each said front piece 26 is (Fig. (3) a leaf holding clip consisting of a body 29 through which are holes 30 to accclntnodate said front piece. Each clip has a back p'ece 3t sliding in the member 29 and having at the top an overhanging lip 32. The back piece 31 has lugs 33 thereon which retain a holding piece 3tby upper trunnions 35 upon the said holding piece. The holding piece also has thereon lower t'runnions 36 by which a linger piece 37 is retained. From the finger piece 37 protrudc trunnioire 38 engaging in the body 2!) of the clip. and from said finger piece also extend lugs 39 which engage with the lower trnnnions 36 of the said holding piece Above the back ends 21 of the leaf turning arms is a rising and falling frame. This consists (Figs. 4.- and 5) of a circular guide 40 having an elevated and narrowed end 41. Upstanding from the circular guide is a vertical portion 42 having an inwardly extending horizontal guiding bracket 4- 3. In the rising and falling frame are holes through the agency of which it is guided by and moves upon the vertical guide pin and stop 18 and the pivot pin 19.
Turning loosely about the main verti 'al pivot pin 19 is a self returning rotatable drum. This consists (Fig. 2) of an upper member or disk ll having thereon an eccentric. portion or stop -,5. Below the upper disk is a lower member or disk 46 having an eccentric portion or stop 1:? thereto. Secured. by one end. to the pivot pin 19 a flat circularly wound spring 4R around which is a casing 4:9. 'lhrough each of the disks l-l and lo is a hole :70 and securel to the upper or either of the disks is an operating cord 51 passing through the cord hole 16 in the framework and over the pulley wheel 15 afore-described.

This has (Fig. a vertical stem 52 below which is a heel 53. the inner end of the lower face of which is rounded upwardly as indicated at 5%. Above the heel 53 and integral therewith a. supporting flange 55 which slides around the circular guide 4:0.
The component parts being assembled as shown in Fig. 9, the cycle of operations with this invention is as follows :The music rest is opened out to its desired length by means of the links 3 operatingin the usual lazy tongs manner, friction keeping the levers in any position they are placed, or they may be locked by any suitable device. The cover of the music is secured to the top piece 5 by the stationary holding clips thereon. Each l at. of the music is then placed in one of the leaf holding clips upon the leaf turning arms. It will be seen that when the linger piece 37 of one of these clips is elevated the holding piece it is also elevated it being pivoted thereto by the lower t'runnions 36. At the same time on account of its upward circumferential travel and the holding piece, being pivoted at the trunnions 3:3 to the back piece 31 of the clip. the back piece is caused to descend, its travel being limited by the lip 32. The clip can now move longitudinally upon its leaf turning arm. \Yhen the leaf of the music has been placed be tween the back piece 31 and the holding piece St the latter by the finger piece 37 is lowered on to the sheet. hen the finger piece 37 is down it not only locks the music sheet between the holding piece 34; and the back piece 31 but also prevents movement of the clip longitudinally upon the front piece 26. In explanation of this holding operation and referring to Fig. it will be noted that when the linger-piece. 37 is lowered. the holding-piece Set is also lowered until it. bears against the back-piece 3i. This backpiece it elevates by reason of the trunnions 35. back-piece 31, the linger-piece is still capable of further travel before it bears against the holding-piece. As the finger-piece performs this extra travel, the lugs 39 and trunnions 30 are forced farther inwardly, with the natural consequence. owing to the trunnions 38, that the trunnions 35 are brought forward or forced outwardly. The trunnions 35 carry with them the back-piece 31. which thus bears hard against the frontpiece 26 and frictionally holds the clip against longitudinal movement thereon. Having secured the various pages each to its independent leaf turning arm all the arms are placed at the right hand side of the rest. The musician may. as desired then turn the leaves without any assistance or inconvenience by pulling the cord 51. This may be accomplishtal by a bell crank lever or the like pivoted below the kevlmard of a piano or organ and operated by the n'iusicians knee, the cord being secured to one member of the said lever; or any other suitable means may be employed whereby the turner may l actuated by the hand or by the foot. Upon the cord being pulled the pulley wheel 15 partially rotates. The rotatable drum moves circnn'ifercntially upon the vertical pivot pin 19 and carries with it the moving device. Immediately the leaf turning arm passes the circular pathway 40 and reaches the elevated and narrowed end ll of the rising and falling frame, the said frame necessarily falls and rests upon the horizontal back end of the next leaf turning arm. Immediately the cord 51 is released the flat circularly wound spring IS causes the drum to assume its former position, the said drum being prevented from over-travel by the vertical guide pin and stop 18 and the eccentric portions and I7 upon the disks of the said drum. As the drum travels back to its normal position, it carries with it the leaf turning arm moving device. This, when commencing its return journey, immediately strikes against the front side of the back end of the uppermost of the unmoved leaf turning arms. Being free to move vertically, by its stem 52 fitting loosely in the holes within the disks of the drum, the upwardly rounded inner end 5% of the heel assists the said device to rise over the said unmoved leaf turning arms. The moving device thereby assumes its normal position by the action of the drum. Immediately the passage over the leaf turning arms is completed the device again falls, its falling travel being limited by the supporting flange which again rests upon the circular pathway 40. In. this manner it will be plain that the arms are operated unitarily and each quite independently of its freely over the arms when on its enforced return journey, but engages successively the uppermost of them with each of its circulatory journeys in the opposite direction. The moving device, when the last arm is operated, slides upon. the base plate of the framework. Vhen all the leaves of the music have been turned the said music may be dis engaged from the various clips and the whole of the arms pushed over to their first position at one side of the music support. As the arms are pushed over the rising and falling frame necessarily rises from its lowest to its fullest extent, carrying with it the arm. moving device. A repeat can be obtained by turning back all the arms or fresh music may be installed. The front piece 26 of each leaf turning arm being pivoted by the pivot pin 2st may be elevated when attaching the cover and successive leaves of a piece of music. The upward movement of each said front piece 26 is limited by the stops 25 and 27. The number of the arms employed will depend upon circumstances.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a leaf turner, a plurality of leaf turning arms, a self-returning rotatable drum above said arms, a vertically movable moving device carried by said drum, and a rising and falling frame comprising a track for supporting the moving device and having an upturned rear end that extends above the horizontal plane of the leaf-turning arms, said track limiting the vertical downward travel of the moving device and being moved upwardly by the arms upon their return movement.
2. In a leaf turner, a plurality of leaf turning arms turning upon a common pivot pin, a flat horizontal inner end to each arm, each end having a vertical portion below which is a stop, said inner ends being superimposed, an outer piece pivoted to the back end of each .arm, a longitudinally sliding holding clip upon each said outer piece, a rising and falling frame above the inner ends of said arms, a circular guide in said frame having an end, a framework including a base plate and a bracket, a guide pin and stop upstanding between the base plate and the bracket of the framework, a rotatable drum upon aforesaid pivot pin and above said arms, an upper disk and a lower disk to said drum, a circularly wound spring between said disks and controlling said drum, an operating cord for said drum, a pulley for the cord attached to the framework, a moving device having a vertical stem passing loosely through the disks of said drum, a heel below said stem and a flange above said heel, said rising and falling frame supporting said moving device.

In a leaf turner, a music rest comprising a support, a series of swinging lin rs pivoted to said support, a top piece above said links, stationary holding clips to said top piece, a framework secured to said top piece, said framework consisting of a base plate, and a rear piece behind the same, a pulley block protruding from said rear piece, a pulley wheel in said block, said back piece having a cord hole through the same and behind said block, a bracket eX- tending forwardly from said rear piece, a guide pin and stop upstanding from the base plate and between said base plate and said bracket, a pivot pin upstanding from said base plate, a plurality of two part leaf turning arms turning on said pivot pin, a horizontal rear end to each arm, said rear ends being superimposed and having friction washers therebetween, an upstanding vertical portion having a stop and rest below it, to each back end, an outer piece having its rear end formed in a stop pivoted to each vertical portion, a stop at the front end of each outer piece, a upon each front piece, a rising and falling frame above the superimposed back ends of the leaf turning arms, including a circular guide having an elevated and narrowed end, a vertical portion upstanding from said leaf holding clip sliding guide and a horizontal guiding bracket extending inwardh from said vertical portion, a drum turning on the aforesaid pivot pin and above the back ends of The leaf turning arins, an operating cord attached to said drum and passing through the aforesaid cord hole and over the aforesaid pulley wheel, said drum (IOIJSiSi'lIlg of and lower disk each having an eccentric portion or stop, a 1m circularly wound spring between said disks, and a casing around said spring and a leaf Turning arin nioi'ing derice carried by said drum and consisting of a YQl'l'lCill stein, a heel below said Stein, and
